For older riders, especially on small hills these are great. I try to make a big trip a year but normally I’m on Midwest small hills with 1-2 minute “runs”. Having to strap up every couple minutes is a pain and by the end of the day even the acid reflux starts kicking in. The responsiveness takes a bit to get used to and it does add to foot fatigue. I haven’t taken them on any big days yet but for small hills they’re amazing.

@@Chandadrive i'm not sure but i'm guessing since instead of the board being strapped to the top side of your foot and it coming up with your foot, it's on the bottom and may feel heavier since it's a "hanging" weight

Got them before last season, the clicking doesn't bother me. Super stoked on the set up and the edge sensitivity. The problem I had was pressure on the tops of my feet. Took a box knife and cut and shaved out a little of padding on the liner in the affected area. Now totally pain free. Also not having anymore back pain with in and out ease. No looking back... Great review TJ! Pobably upgrading to the V-2.0 after this season.

Yup, not only are they fine, they're better in most ways. But most importantly, when you're 14th chair and seconds count to get to the fresh lines, you can click right in and probably pass anyone who so much as wobbles trying to strap in on the fly. 😎 Honestly, that earlier edge engagement alone is worth the price of admission. I have less foot pain with these compared to straps (though I sized down, so that's largely a boot fit issue, admittedly). It basically feels like the straps are integrated to the boot but instead of any slop of the boot inside the straps before full engagement or at different degrees of ankle flexion, your foot movements are transmitted faster and more precisely. In many ways just superior. Damn comfortable boots, too (Photons). Soft and warm and cushiony. And not too slippery on parking lot ice.

TJ, would the ankle, shin issue be more of a burton boot fit issue rather than the step on. Glad that you tried the ion step on boots which is more stiff.. i have had the step on for couple of years and have the ions, photon, swath step on boots. I just got the DC control boot. Cant wait to try that with toe hooks 2.0. they also have the kendo lace up boots and new genesis bindings. In Australia, the runs are short and I just turned 50.. so those 2 combos make step on perfect for me.. i tried them in Niseko/rusutsu and they work well in Japow.

No you’re pretty locked in. I took a pretty nasty spill in them (tomahawked a couple times and had to throw the helmet away) and they didn’t budge. They have a 2 lock system on the heel, sometimes if your pants are in the way or too much snow you only get 1 click. Which is a bit looser and maybe then you could fall out. But if you’re all the way in you’re not going anywhere.
@bkhan777

You would legit have to crack the entire back of the binding off in a fall before for that would happen. if this has happened to someone then it was either human error or complete binding integrity failure. I cracked heel cups on some of the top shelf strap bindings out there. Being a heavier rider I put a massive amount of torque and pressure on my bindings and boots. Been riding the Step On EST versions for years now . Have taken some falls that I knew that if I was in a strap something would have snapped. Not one issue at all with the Step Ons.

I have the ion photon boot, w/ the original step on. My snow review: just like ANY binding, snow and ice will be an issue. It’s there no matter what. That being said, it’s much harder for ice and snow to build up since it’s an open channel and there’s less pieces for snow to clump up on. In translation, that makes snow pack less of an issue than conventional bindings.

@@DanielMartinez-rv6su Thanks for sharing your insight. Based on what you describe it sounds like you can give your board a kick to clear the snow when on the lift and pop into the binding as you exit the chair. Cant wait to try it next season (getting too icy and rocky for me already - damn this global warming).

He tightened his boots too much. Reps should educate the public more. These boots have extreme performance on holding onto the foot, so a little goes a long way. I had the same issue and then I lossened up my inner laces and BAM. feels absolutely marvelous now. No pain at all. Even after riding for 7 hours straight

@@DanielMartinez-rv6su He actually tried just loosening up the boas completely and still had the same issue, it's just where the pressure points are on the inside. If you have a wide foot, these boots will always either be too loose at the heel, or agony on the toes.

My question: i suffer from PLANTAR FASCIITIS, and having to tight the the binding strap and the boot to feel the board usually makes it worse, and i have to stop at least once mid slope to release the pain. Could StepOns solve the problem? Since once the foot is attached to the board there is no excessive pressure from the binding strap constricting the foot, and the board is more reactive anyways because of the StepOn, the foot should hypotetcly be less squeezed. Anyone can validate this?
@DanielMartinez-rv6su
@DanielMartinez-rv6su 2 жыл бұрын
I ride with boot strap undone or loose most the time. It’s not essential, just when you get into the deep freestyle carving. Sounds like you just need the boot without the boa.
@DanielMartinez-rv6su
@DanielMartinez-rv6su 2 жыл бұрын
Ah I misunderstood your comment. Yes, step on does solve that problem! You don’t feel the constrictive pressure like you do from straps but they do make boots that can simulate that feeling, but it sounds like you don’t want that sensation, so I would go with step on boots that use traditional laces.

We need at least a 100 day review with them. How’s the durability with the toe clips and the release lever etc. Also what’s the point with the ankle strap across the boot? Correct me if I’m wrong but I would imagine that if your heel is clicked in and your toes are clicked in then that ankle strap would be pointless since it’s just attached to the boots?

I've got 200 days on my step ons and my ion boots. There has been little to no wear on the toe and heel clips. The only real wear point is on the little snap tabs that hold the footbed down. The boots have held up incredibly well also( granted they were super stiff to start). The snugger "strap" acts like a second heel harness. It really just stiffens the boots. When I first got my boots a ran it super loose and as they broke in I tightened it to keep the flex the same. Step ons are great, I've run them every where..even heli boarding ( the guides love the lack of straps while putting them in the heli basket as well).
