I have been riding Step On’s for 3 seasons. I own two pairs and match them up with the Burton ION boot. I was riding your standard bindings for 25 years. I will never go back. Step-On’s are so easy to get in and out of. Sure, it takes some practice, but once you get the hang of it, there is no going back. I’ve ridden in all conditions. Deep powder i can get in them no issue. I never sit down, regardless of the pitch. Again, it has taken me practice. The other benefit that nobody seems to talk about is waiting in long lift lines. I now wait in line with my board until i get to the gate and lay more board down nicely and just step right on with the front foot. I ride with skiers, so no holding them up when we get off lifts. If you are shopping for boot and bindings, i would recommend the Step On’s. My wife got tired of watching me get in and out so quickly, she just finally ordered herself a set.

Personally, I tried them along with a bunch of the alternatives. And ended up going with the supermatics from nidecker. I loved that I could keep my usual boots because I'm quite picky when it comes to boots and then the fact that they also have regular bindings is perfect for when you do want that extra click or 2. And plus, I can let my friends try who don't have the special boots

Having had both my knees scoped and super tight hamstrings all the time, I find the Step-Ons are the solution that keeps me riding. Just wrapped 2 straight days of riding with my daughter and walked away with zero soreness. They're not perfect, but definitely a step (on) in the right direction.

I honestly dont understand anyone saying that the step ons are hard to get in or out of. I have about 30ish days on mine and have not had any issues. I can easily get into and out of them while moving and it's super easy to step in and do a quick ollie to make sure you get that double click. I ride with skiers and can be locked in and ready to ride before they even get their poles situated after getting off the lift so I actually end up waiting for them a lot of the time. And I get out smoothly while riding through the lift gates without ever having to stop. I'm not an expert by any means but I can get around the mountian well enough and the fact that these guys struggle with something that I find simple baffles me.

I have stepons, and agree with almost all of what you guys said aside from the part where you have to stop to step in, after a while you can step in while moving after pushing on a cattrack which is my favorite part about them since you don't have to stop or bend over to get in while moving. Additional things- They can be very difficult to get into while in deep powder, since you need to push into them, and the board just falls downhill when you try to get in. I fell into a tree well a while ago- i got lucky and didn't actually go into any snow, but i was upside down, my board being held by branches. It was extremely difficult to get out of the stepons because of the placement of the lever, as well as having to pull and twist, and when you're stuck in a tree well hoping to not fall further down and hanging onto branches, that's extremely difficult.
@brianlewis2384
@brianlewis2384 Жыл бұрын
I actually had the exact same experience happen to me, it was later in the day up here in the Adirondacks Ny, so the snow became much softer, I was on a narrow windy cat track, lost my balance while going pretty slow and got tangled up with a few tree branches on the edge of the run, took me nearly 5 minutes to finagle myself out and continue riding

@@nativeyo Maybe you're too focused on trying to step in than actually focusing on where you're going and keep your weight centred above your board with your shoulders in line, kinda like beginners focusing on the first feet in front of them instead of what's coming further up. I'm still not fluent stepping on while riding but I notice it helps to try it on very mellow slopes and just practice placing my back foot against the binding for a reference feel, and get that heel in first and create it as muscle memory. If succeeding a couple of times a slightly steeper hill etc,,,

Alright look I really do appreciate your honest take on the step ons, but as a casual snowboarder who began in traditional bindings 10 years ago (been riding step ons for last 3 years now) I don't agree with majority of these takes. EVERY time I get off the lift with my buddies, I'm clicked in and waiting on top of the slopes with my skier friends while my other 4 snowboarding buddies are on the ground tuning their bindings to get them just right. Mind you this is after exiting EVERY lift!! As far as getting out I just don't understand why you think bending down the same amount to unstrap TWO bindings is SOO much easier than lifting ONE lever. Again, I appreciate the review but it sounds like its coming from a "old head afraid of change" perspective. Like step ons are objectively easier to manage ESPECIALLY for the casual snowboarder that only has 10-15 days on the mountain a year. Just my filthy casual take I suppose; and thanks again for the review.
@scratastic1
@scratastic1 Жыл бұрын
You got a good point on the number of days on the mountain, I think for people who board so much year round for multiple years with traditional straps it's very hard to give a unbiased/objective opinion about step ons even if they rode them for lets say 2 months even. The same with the argument no pro uses them in competition, of course they are not going to change something suddenly they been used to all their career. But I think talented kids growing up with step ons could end up using them as pro's

Great approach to this review !! One of a kind 👍. Let me add two things:. #1. Txs for commenting on getting in sitting down. But I want to see it actually happen cause I don't believe it ! 🙂. Also note, when u hav to get in (or get out);sitting down your life is probably hanging in the balance on a scratchy double black diamond ! This is serious $hit 😲. Let's see some more of that issue to convince me. #2. The competition is Flow bindings. As well as supermatic. Just want to point out that, w flow, hav a can of silicone spray to lube the straps and front of your boot each time u ride. It makes those things work like magic 👍.

I used traditional bindings before i started using step ons. i used them for over 20 days now you can usually pull your boot out without needing to do the twist motion. Also i have clicked my second binding on while on the chairlift so i am ready to just snowboard off the chairlift as soon as i hit the top like a skier does. Just be careful you dont catch an edge while doing it though you can end up under the chairlift i can picture as a worse case scenario.(Hasn't happened to me yet but if you are less experienced it might). You also have to be sure there is enough slope though otherwise you still have to unbind and skate with one foot. You can also try to click you second binding on while skating so you don't stop. It takes some practice though to aim your foot in the second binding. But it can be much faster than trying to do traditional straps in that sense.

I know that the price of the step-ons can lead some people astray, however the product has come such a long way throughout the years of production and I think that they are starting to become more mainstream, I think that overall traditional bindings may appeal to the larger traditional snowboard community and are a better binding in terms of price, usability, durability. But the step ons are by far the easier option for older people, people who may struggle with a weight problem and those looking to click in & out so they can keep up with their skiers buddies when they get off the lift! Great vid kev, love seeing the collabs with ellstacker, and glad to see you on a pair of step ons yew!!

Someone in our group on our last snow trip had them. He had a strap between the front shoe & binding in case it detached on a lift. He also hit a bush at 1 point which unclipped his shoe which was pretty scary.

This is the most honest review. Easy to get in if you’re standing. A bit funny awkward to get out of but nothing to really complain about. Not the best if you get stuck in pow and try to strap back in. A bit difficult to do that. Needs special boots which kind of forces you into keeping them and getting used to them. Good responsiveness and very light weight. Am I missing anything?

The only thing I didn’t like about snowboarding was getting down to tight the bindings. Step-on solves that! Also, getting the third click was not that hard on groomed rides. I just had to press deeper after the first 2 clicks.

The big key in doing step ons, you need very tight or stifffff boots. The heel turns are sick but toes sometimes can be sketchy. But I'm used to it now on a 15+ day on them. Really have no problems getting in or out. But I do come from bmx racing with clip ons which have the same way of getting out of them.

Have you reviewed the Supermatics yet? You should try them out if not, I prefer them more than StepOns. You naturally put your foot in toe first then heel, plus if you’re in deep pow you can just use them like regular bindings with straps. I feel like with any StepOn, Supermatics, Flows, Clews, Clickers, whatever, the idea is to get in quickly and ride. No waiting at the top of the lift. When I’m at the bottom I’m not in a rush to get out, so even if takes slightly longer to get out, what’s the rush?

Yes getting out if them was the trickiest bit to master and you need to twist your foot but it's so easy now. And from the review point of view about not sure if you get that 2nd click etc.... yes this does happen occasionally depending on the terrain you step on with but the pressure you put on your foot on the 1st turn it clicks straight away and happens about as rarely as realising you haven't done your strap up tight enough and bend down whilst moving to get that extra couple of clicks

I’m surprised you can mix and match brands of boots and bindings

I think it's only burton, nitro and DC that do a step on models, maybe more in the future

Burton startet licensing the step on technology for boots to other brands. Makes totally sense, as the fit of the boot is the most important thing and different brands have different fits for a greater variety of foot shapes and burton will sell more bindings in total in the end.

Supermatic rules😊

Agree, I’ve been using both and love the Supermatics. Just like Ell said in the video here, going in with heel first then toes feels unnatural. With the Supermatics you naturally go in toe first then heel; plus they have regular straps so if you are in deep pow you can just use them like regular bindings.

Snow build up will stop you from clicking in completely. I’m constantly clearing snow from binding before clicking in.

But that's the same with regular bindings, I always did that before getting step ons. Nothing as annoying as getting a plate of ice on your footbed.

@@scratastic1 agreed, but with step ons you’re un-sure until you head down the hill . But i still love the ease of use.

@@prmanager8399 Once you hear one click, you are secure until you throw the lever. The second click just makes it tighter.

i doubt they were developed to advanced the sport, it just looks like material cost savings. no ratchet, no straps, (ie the most expensive-to-produce parts).

That guy who complained about the mechanism to detach had his step on's mounted the WRONG WAY. WHY WOULD YOU COMPLAIN ABOUT SOMETHING WHEN YOU ARE USING IT WRONG. The mechanism would be close to where he was showing he wanted them, like for classical bindings IF he didn't switch the left and right one...
