Have you ridden these products? Let people know what you think in the comments below.
The 2023 Burton Photon boot features an Imprint 3 liner with Dry Ride Heat Cycle lining, a Focus Cuff, Lightweight Power Panels and Aegis Antimicrobial Coating. The boot also features a Dual Zone BOA system with TX3 laces, and Level 2 Molded EVA footbed and the Step On EST Outsole. Burton rates the Photon a 7/10 flex but with Total Comfort Construction, the boots will feel broken in and ready to ride right out of the box.
The 2023 Genesis Step On binding is compatible with all current mounting systems and hole patterns. It features 30% Short Glass and Nylon Composite baseplates and highbacks with a Reflex Fullbed Cushioning System under the foot, maximizing comfort and minimizing fatigue. FLAD allows for tool-free and micro-adjustable forward lean, and Kickback Hammock offers increased response and reduced vibration.
“If anyone is curious about getting Step On, I’d say for sure, pick ‘em up. I think you’ll be really happy with them.” -Chris

I got them last year, never going back to normal bindings! The comfort of stepping in and out is so worth it! I never sit down or have to bend over anymore and that saves me so much energy throughout the day! In the video he says it feels exactly like a normal binding. I did notice a big difference in response though. As you are glued to the base of the board it responds inmediately, you don't have pull the boot up in order for the straps to kick in...

I got them last year (21/22) and don't have any reason to go back to straps. Super fun to click right in, but mostly they feel more intuitive and like there is a better connection to the edge and base, so the only slop area is in the boot fit and flex, not that plus the transmission through the straps, which can be a tooth or two of ratchet-strap off and add to the slop (and thereby to imprecision and foot pain). Never had any problem with them coming undone, you just have to make sure you get all 4 clicks (two at the toe cleats, two levels of clicked-in on the heel one), which does require a little extra heel press on soft snow. No issues getting clogged with pow, exact same as with strap bindings (you don't want snow packed under your foot, so you have to brush it out with your hand, no big deal). I'm no pro and haven't ridden a ton of other strap bindings, but the StepOns with Photon boot are a step up from my previous setup, which was Burton Missions and K2 Raiders, and I've ridden some Unions that were flexy and squirrely. If you absolutely need significant highback rotation, pretty sure these still don't have it, but it's nice to see they made the forward lean adjustment tool-less, because the 21/22's I have require a tool and the adjustment is pretty annoying to make. Still recommend them despite that. And they look good on the board. And you never have to replace ratchet straps, which usually happens after they start to suck bad enough that you have to after riding with them too loose or too tight for a while. If you're jealous of skiers riding away without a care in the world and want to leave your wet-assed friends behind, I say get em!

"tool-free micro adjustable forward lean"? I had to use a thin Phillips and adjust two screws to get forward lean on my genesis?

It’s best if all your friends get them too for extra runs. Though even if they don’t it’s still easier.

This is Everett reaching back out to you about those toe clips for the step on bindings. Heard back from the warranty team and they said they have to be sent in to get fixed. Can't send out any spare parts for those unfortunately. Not even our Flagship stores have the ability to order them in and replace them at the store. I get that it's super frustrating, cause I MTB as well and know it's super easy to fix that part. The reasoning is just for liability reasons. I'm on your side where I think it's a little ridiculous of a policy, so I feel for you. Hope you have a good season though, and please hit me up if you have any other questions! Is the white/grey boots bindings really hard to keep looking clean/do they get really dirty and show it?

Difficult to trust a review when they mention zero drawbacks!

Probably because there are “zero drawbacks”! I’ve ridden them for 4 years now and I’ve never had any problems I couldn’t solve with my gloved hands. I do put Boot Scrapers on everyone of my Boards though.

I've been researching these bindings extensively for the past month, and they seem to get overwhelmingly positive reviews, but they do have a few drawbacks. The biggest is they are only compatible with step-on boots and vice versa. You can't wear step-on boots with traditional bindings, and you can't wear regular boots in the step-on bindings. At the time of writing, Burton and DC are the only brands that make step-on boots, so the selection is limited. Burton's boots seem to perform well (as they should), but they are pricey. DC's boots are more affordable, but they get mixed reviews. If your feet don't feet comfortably in either, then you're SOL. Additionally, Burton and Flux are the only brands that make step-on bindings. The second complaint I most commonly hear comes from hardcore park riders. They don't like how they can't adjust the ankle and toe tightness independently like you can with straps. With the step-on system, your boots and the bindings become locked together. This eliminates wiggle room and reduces flexibility as well as margin for error. On the flipside, this is exactly what makes the Burton Step-on bindings more responsive edge-to-edge, so there's a bit of a trade-off. Another drawback (which is only a minor inconvenience) is that they are bit trickier to step out of due to the toe cleats. Your toes don't "pop-out" in the same way that your heel does, so you have to maneuver your feet out which throws people off at first. Although, I have heard this gets easier with time. Lastly, there's the perceived risk of them "popping off". Burton claims the only reason this should happen is due to user error, but there are enough stories online to dismay those who aren't quite convinced yet. They have also yet to win over professionals. Then again, most people aren't snowboarding at a professional level. Overall, it seems these bindings are better suited for those in the beginner-intermediate range who want comfort and convenience as opposed to advanced, aggressive riders that want 100% confidence and adjustability in their bindings. I fall into the prior category which is why I ordered my own pair and can't wait to try them out next season.
