Scenic Road trip to Burtonport in Ireland. I head out on a road trip to catch a ferry to Arranmore/Arran Island after a disappointing experience at Inishfree Island. I cant wait to show you the Arranmore Island Adventure. Adventure travel at its best as this is a new location. The link to the previous video at the end screen. No other ports offer a ferry service to Arranmore Island. You can also take a ferry to Inishfree Island (the proper one for the Wild Atlantic Way) and then onto Arranmore however at the time had i known this I would of probably taken it up. I believe this is the red ferry and I took the blue ferry.
Anyway Burtonport is the key to Arranmore Island. Burtonport is a Gaelic fishing village located about 7 km from Dungloe in Co. Donegal.
The harbour is fairly large considering the size of the village. It went through an extensive upgrade in 2021. The Wild Atlantic Way sign is located close to the harbour with a information board which is in the video.
Burtonport had a railway service from 1903 till 1940 which was provided by the Londonderry and Lough Swilly Railway. After struggling to make money for years they decided to terminate the route in order to save money. However this failed to bring in revenue and the Co. Donegal lost its train services in the 1950s which accounted for all of its infrastructure!
Most of the railway lines have been removed and roads placed on them. It seems unlikely we will ever see railway in Donegal again.
