Original video description: Burzum appeared from nowhere in 1991 with a demo tape made up of a dozen guitars-and-bass-only tracks in rehearsal quality. I made a few more or less successful metal albums, but they all always included at least some ambient music. With time I moved further and further away from metal, and today only the ambient music remains. Today (2013) I think I am done playing metal music for good. Many of you followed Burzum through the years, some even from the beginning, and I think metal-Burzum deserves a proper "good bye". So, just like I started out I will finish metal-Burzum with a guitars-and-bass-only track in rehearsal quality. "Back to the Shadows" is made up of the last metal riffs I ever made (in 2012). It was never released in any way, or recorded (beyond what you hear here), and it will not either -- beyond this short "video". Take it for what it is; a sentimental good bye to metal-Burzum. The music is playing with an image of the 17 year-old me, taken from the time when some of the first Burzum tracks were made. You can see this track as a good bye to that fellow too. You can use this music as you please privately, but the track is mine, so if you by any chance want to use it commercially you need a permission from me to do so. NB! Remember that I don't have a Facebook account, so all those claiming to be me there are frauds.

This song.... wow. This song. It moves me every damn time. How does varg do THIS? No other musician can evoke the same emotions. There is something varg was born with which cant be tought or gained through hard work. The simplicity of this song and many of his other songs are testament to that. But the emotions brought to light with this simplicity is so complex and misunderstood, i just need to dig deeper and deeper to make any sense of it.

Can't believe it has already been about eight years... It's pretty amazing how effortlessly he went back to sounding like '92/93, even if for a brief moment (that deliciously raw sound sure helps, sounds like a Filosofem outtake). _Many_ have mimicked him, but I think nobody has ever been able to really match Varg's seemingly inborn sense for simple, elegant riff writing. I mean, this is just _one_ slow, crawling tremolo line, which in typical Burzum fashion gets turned into a countermelody to a second riff that's even more stripped down. Some basic bass notes on top and that's it. It's beyond barebones, yet the resulting harmony is able to conjure up images for which many a band would need to reach for the synthesizer... And that takes talent. In fact, this is probably a few half-intelligible shrieks away from being a perfectly usable two-minute condensation of his classic era. Varg, thank you for everything, it's a damn shame you've decided to permanently move on from black metal, but that's life, I suppose. We all experience shifting interests at some point.
