First of many conversion videos (30 videos + some extra). This is basically the beginning, starting from bare bones. This video explains some of the early things to go over before you start installing couches and christmas lights. A little bit about our plan for the bus, layout, hopes and things like that.
If you find any of this info helpful and want to give back please feel free to make donations direct to our paypal account ThePimentalBus@gmail.com

Im not going to skip ahead to see the results. Im doing a blue bird shorty now. I did a carpenter school bus that was 40' but it was just to long for just the 2 of us. Cant wait to get my floors down now.

+scottsinfl I just started working on my 1970 Carpenter 30ft bus. Converted it to live in about 20 years ago but now re-converting it into a toy hauler camper.

+onewyatt1 The first one i did was a 91 carpenter 40' but it was just to long for the 2 of us so i sold it and found a shorty im just having a hard time finding time to finish this one.

I have plenty time for my projects but health and lack of funds got me on a slow roll. The old bus needs a lot but it is about the right size for what I need. I did think about the newer shorty busses with the handicapped lift system that are selling for as little as $4,000. Was thinking the lift system would be handy if modified to load toys. The way SS disability is acting, I don't think I can afford a newer bus and the cost of converting it. Hoping to have my old one up and ready for some adventure for less than the cost of another bus.

57, a few heart attacks, stroke, COPD, knees, back and a few other minor things got me down to much less than a half day. Some days I can't even sit without problems. Seems like I over extend myself every time I do feel up to something. Starting to wonder if I will ever find a balance. Yep, this getting old stuff is getting to me. Figure the old bus will help me go fishing and camping till I can't do anything. Hoping to hit some high country first. I want to spend some time in the Rocky Mountains again if I can handle the thin air. High on the bucket list is peeing on a redwood tree out a little more west. Anyway, from where I am here at Dirtwater (my place) it is about as far to the east as it is the west coast or Canada. Seen most of it while driving trucks but couldn't take time to enjoy much. Had my fill of Alaska and the like so I can keep to the lower 48 while I have time left. Thinking about following the fair weather north and south, depending on season, till I can't do it any more. Then again, I may just hang out here at Dirtwater and get me a few goats, more chickens and grow some things.

Impressive job on that whole stairwell/door/hydronic heater mess. Sounds like an immense hassle. Have a brother who had an older Thomas coach conversion he lived in for about 6 years. One of the best things about it was a built-in mid body stairwell on the street side. The worst thing was the 6' 2" headroom and pretty round roof. Mine is only 22' long but the ceiling is 6' 51/2" and has a less curved roof.

Yes, I have seen your other videos and they are very impressive. I went back to your first video because that is the stage I am at as I am starting a Skoolie build myself and you have given me some great design ideas. I don't have your welding and carpentry skills so I'll be looking for a sub-contractor to assist me. Btw, are you for hire?

Awesome. I just wondered whether setting up fold out stairs that open up outside the bus and fold away flat would be cool, creating more interior space that the current permanent stairs are occupying..?
@Jarrodpimental
@Jarrodpimental 9 жыл бұрын
We thought of that too. We went this way for 2 reasons. 1 we have the space to waste. There is a dinette that seats 5 plus a desk plus 5 car seats in the cab, 6 beds, and a full kitchen. So our layout wasn't lacking space. 2. The original door was less than 4' tall and it was a lot of crouching to get in and out.

Good job on your conversion. Just an FYI as a bus owner myself that will benefit you - your Allison transmission is an MD3060. It has capabilities of having a 6th overdrive gear that will save you 350 RPM on the highway. It is locked out by the computer, and is well worth spending $200-300 in having it unlocked! You will recoop your cost in fuel savings. You will have to request your Thomas bus dealer to submit a request to Thomas Built Buses for a letter to give to your Allison Transmission dealer for permission.
@Jarrodpimental
@Jarrodpimental 9 жыл бұрын
Yea I'm actually really hoping to do this but the allison service center is so far from me.
@IndianaPentecostal23

Get your letter from Thomas, and schedule a time with you Allison dealer to go down. It took them literally 20 minutes. Well worth it. I have had it done on my three buses that have this tranny.
@Jarrodpimental
@Jarrodpimental 9 жыл бұрын
Allison told me I can't get the 6th gear done. My gear ratio is 5.40 and with the cat 3126 the tranny will shift 5 to 6 at 69mph and my engine maxes out at 70 mph. So it is basically useless to have it done. And the bus will only get to 70 mph on a .5 down grade or more anyway. Do you have any knowledge of these numbers?
@IndianaPentecostal23
@IndianaPentecostal23 9 жыл бұрын
Hi Jarrod. Consult with your Thomas dealer first. I have never had an issue with Allisons. They were confused at first as they never get that request. Locate your local Thomas dealer and tell them you need them to submit a request to Thomas for a letter stating it's okay to unlock 6th. They will produce that letter. It will tell you what the restrictions are.. 75mph tires, 17 pin drive shaft (recommended, not required). That letter then goes to your Allison dealer. They will get the reprogramming codes/authorization from Allison direct and reprogram. I'll be honest, they told me the same thing at first - they weren't sure when, if at all, the gear would kick in. On my buses with the CAT3126B/E and MD3060 the 6th gear kicks in at 49mph. I will be very, very suprised if it kicks in as high as they say. When you cruising 70mph, what is your RPM? Your local CAT dealer can reprogram the govenor speed to whatever you want it, but do know the CATs are only designed to go a certain RPM and it will not exceed that.
@Jarrodpimental
@Jarrodpimental 9 жыл бұрын
Sorry. Thomas was who told me that information. My bus tops out at about 66mph right now and that is at 2300rpm both of my gauges might be off slightly too. 5th gear kicks in at around 40-45 I think. I'm nervous that if they are correct it will be useless for me to have had it done. Since I rarest drive over 60 mph anyway.

I thought Thomas was supposed to be the better built bodies?
@Jarrodpimental
@Jarrodpimental 9 жыл бұрын
Thomas could have a better reputation for quality but I doubt it based on what I've seen under the skin here. Also blue bird is the better looking body is what I was referring to anyway. Which is only my opinion. And besides I like the look of my bus just fine now.

We are in Plymouth. Unfortunately I have to say I can't make a meeting for us, we are currently scrambling to move in the next 2 weeks. Mostly why I haven't made many new videos. Before I made my bus I really wanted to see a bus too, I also asked someone and they didn't even answer me. So I know where your coming from and would like to help but we are swamped.

I’m not a blogger. There were a few videos after the build but they had no info in them other than what’s happening in our lives and that doesn’t help mankind out in any way shape or form so I deleted them. We full timed in the bus for a year. Then got an apartment. Now we have space for dirt bikes and hockey equipment desktop computers. It’s awesome.

Use your trust fund to buy everything. If you don't have a trust fund then get a girlfriend who does. Pay someone who has no experience to build it, then take it on a road trip and don't forget to make an Instagram and Facebook account for your bus. Also HGTV has forms to submit to be on tv, you should fill one of those out. Good luck.
