Nigel's lead work on Razorblade Suitcase is amazing. His use of flanger gives a haunting feel in 'Swallowed' and others, combined of course with that awesome 90's distortion cranked up. Made even better with Steve Albini (RIP) on the other side of the glass.

I heard last minute that they were going to play CB that night and went down there on a lark. I live in Hell's Kitchen. It was tight in there. Stood at the bar with a beer right where the club opens up to the main room (couldnt get any closer to the stage) and had a transcendant experience. Everyone there was hearing them on the radio so they were just about to explode on the national scene. The power and energy in the room felt limitless. We all new it was a special show. There was a mixture of respect and awe in the crowd and the band sounded amazing for all the tech problems going on as often happens on a tight stage. The place heated up real toasty and got tighter as their set went on. Word must have spread real quick. By the end of the show it was sardine city. I'll never forget the power of his voice that night. Smoked some hash in the back hallway by the toilets w strangers after the band cleared out. Thats how good the vibe was that night. Passing the hash. Too bad the whole L.E.S. has completely changed. Mother's with strollers in Tomkins Square Park. Old punk rockers in their 60s on their last legs teetering in their engineer boots occassionally stumble through, but they are mere ghosts now. Almost no trace of the grit and danger of the area. The price of progress.

Michael Carrera sometimes brings first matters- when “ teen spirit” hit, it was bonkers...... I think that and skirts death added mystique to a good band and made them legendary- I maybe in the minority but I think if the Stone hit the states first, the Beatles wouldn’t have been nearly as popular (which they are great- no doubt)
