I was told many,many years ago, by a old blacksmith, to always use grease on your outdoor blade to prevent water and oxygen getting on the blade. He suggested using your fixed blade for all the big tasks and your boy scout jack-knife for your food prep and lighter duties. I always put plenty of Vaseline on my belt knife and always take a tube/tub of it with me when venturing out into the great outdoors. Happy Trails folks.

I started with carbon because of the 'spark' factor, but after years of rusted knives I switched to stainless. My environments are pretty humid and sometimes I neglect proper maintenance. In Mora's defence, I once lost a [carbon] Bushcraft Black in the Fall and found it in the Spring after the snow melt, and it cleaned up like brand new. Most carbon blades would have been ruined in that scenario.

John Campbell In English, when referring to humid climates/environments, does it mean snowy/rainy/dry winters in addition to hot, humid “jungle”/Florida weather? Weird question, maybe, but I’m just trying to get it specified for my own understanding on the subject.

In Britain, for my usage, after few years of trial, I've found I prefer stainless steel for smaller knives for personal use. Carbon steel I equate more with tools and work - will flex a bit more, have seen larger knives bend well rather than snap.

Since this kind of knives are built for tough jobs, Carbon is the way to go. If it was a knife that was going to be used for normal cutting tasks, food prepe etc, then Stainless woulf be the right choice. That's why they brought out the stainless version first and the Carbon after some years, If the did it the opposite way, not many stainless Garbergs would have been sold. Their trick worked! The knife became famous even with the not so ideal stainless blade, it sold A LOT and then, they released the Carbon version, which sold as many as the stainless sold!!

I think it's a very essential film, however I would like to emphasize one thing. If we all agree that the simple carbon steel is easier to sharpen how do you think it's possible to be more resistance against wear in the same time. Sorry bu once you have your edge on either good stainless like 14c28, VG-10, N690 or similar and plain carbon steel like c100, 1095 or sk5, stainless steel will hold it's edge longer than carbon due to high content of chromium, which apart from protecting the steel from corrosion also creates carbides which increases the wear resistance. Plain carbon steels are just tough but it doesn't mean they wear slower. Another thing is with more complex carbon steels, so called alloyed steels or tool steels. Those in many aspects outperform stainless steels of the same or similar grade or quality level.

projekctx Stainless is harder, and carbon is softer, therefore carbon tends to be “pushed” before it gets “worn out”, while stainless just gets worn out, when it first does. This makes carbon steel “tougher” in the sense that it can take more of a beating, but stainless provides more tension and resistance (like punching metal, bending it, vs punching glass, shattering it). Therefore, having a balance is good, giving it both strength and flexibility.

@@Butch_Deezlsteak Of course, but let’s compare apples to apples not to bananas. If we take two steels of the same hardness’s the thing that constitutes the wear resistance is presence of carbides, mostly of chromium and vanadium, which plain carbon steels don’t have almost at all.

This is further complicated by the steel mix and heat treat. So it's best to look at the exact type of steel in the product and work out what suits you personally. IMHO.

The idea that carbon steel holds an edge longer than stainless steel is false. The chromium carbides within stainless steel are several magnitudes harder than iron carbides within carbon steel.

I have a Terävä Jääkäripuukko 140mm in Carbon Steel and the Mora Garberg (110mm?) in Stainless Steel. I think they both compliment each other and depending where I go, I can decide which one to take.

A hot vinegar petina will make a great coating. I rinse-wipe mine to remove sap, juices and soil. I wipe with olive oil occasionally. Garden and forage stays so much sharper than my stainless. Stainless tends to roll over and can be rolled back once before it chips off and takes a reshaping quite often. Love carbon! Like stainless less!

I came to this video to research what makes a good bushcraft knife as I occasionally find myself engaged in some aspects of bushcraft. I do some camping in the backcountry and often gather wood and build fires. I was hoping you'd cover which steel is less likely to damage in heavy use, like when splitting wood with a knife and baton. Still informative, but I'll have to do some more research. Currently, most of my knives are 420HC, which is a high carbon stainless. I just got a blade with M390, but it's too small for bushcrafting.

Paid $80 for a conor 1095 daily carry for forestry work. I have had it for a week and it is completely rusted out. Had I know this I would never have bought. Unless you want to throw your knife in a vat of oil when you get home then avoid 1095. The Kershaw that this was an upgrade for is way better. Not worth the daily maintenance.

I like carbon blades and got the C Garberg despite of some Mora officials and sales men claim 14c28n stainless steel of garberg holds better age.

Good question, I've been wondering about that myself. Animal fat? Fire-starting fuel like Vasoline? Leather balm? Not sure, maybe they just make sure they have some oil every time they go into town. If you never get into town I suppose a rusty knife is the least of your problems.
@ShoahBiz

Animal fat and I recall from I think an episode of dual survival when they found a a dead beaver and skinned it. They found a gland inside the beaver that they squeezed for some type of oil or fat or something and said it was good for protecting the blade.

SirBallBag Carbon steel would be the “regular” out of the two. Is carbon steel what you’re saying is better?
