Bushcraft LANDING NET from ALONE Season 8

In this survival skills video we're recreating the bushcraft landing net from ALONE Season 8 Episode 5. A landing net like the one made here is hugely important for fishing in a wilderness living or survival situation. Many fish spit the hook right at the shore and a net will help put more food in the pot. For a detailed video explaining basic net making techniques, see the "Net Making for Beginners" video in the link below. Here, Clay Hayes starts by making a net needle and gauge card with his Leatherman P4. From there we bushcraft the landing net hoop, make the net, and tie everything in place. Paracord is used for binding using a whipping technique just like you'd finish the serving on a bowstring.

Thank you for doing these videos. These are the things I wish the producers would focus on showing us instead of making us watch contestants cry over killing animals and endless talk about missing home. Basically, show me more survival and less emotions.

Clay, the quality conclusion of this net was just another example of the attention to detail and performance you also put into your bow making. Study and practice honing these primitive skills pay dividends when it counts in real life. You didn’t “wing it” with your net, and it showed in the finished product. Practiced shooting skills with your bow allowed a quick and fluid shot at that buck to happen naturally when success or failure depended on that developed skill. There sure was a lot riding on that shot...possibly continuing in the contest or not. So glad you were successful! Hopefully you’ll be the one to consume your kill, and not a bear! I wish for your continued success!

Rubbing the Paracord inner strands against pine tree to get the pine resin on them is an excellent tip. Just started watching your videos and I'm incredibly impressed on the small details that you include that make the technique work! Like on your rabbit snaring video discussing how to put a small stick under the noose to keep the rabbit from going underneath it, straightening the snare out after you catch something, or on your bow video where you showed how to set your ax into a block of wood to help plane the bow. Those details are critical to helping a beginner master the craft and create a working product!!! Thank you, videos are awesome, keep it up!

I'm damn good in the wilderness, but after watching all the episodes of alone I realized I did not have a lot of the tools that I need if something happens and it goes from a hunting or camping trip, to having to survive with what you have on your person. So not I'm learning how to make nets. ML&R

I made an 8 foot radius, 16’ diameter cast net from thin Kevlar string, it’s slick too, when making the second wrap knot, I did it twice and it worked out great, didn’t slip when pulled tight. By the way, don’t try and make a cast net that big till you know how to throw one lol, it’s useless to me, I just use my factory 6’ radius one when casting for mullet.

Clay, if you haven’t already check out Larry Haun’s book A Carpenter’s Life as told by Houses. Enjoyable read detailing the evolution of American homes and includes the pit house used on Alone that were used in the Midwest up until the Second World War.

Thank you for doing this. I can understand the process(always seemed more complicated). Does it help if net needle need is thinner than the width of the gauging card? so you base the size of the net needle to the size of the gauging card or smaller and the gauging card to the size of net you plan to make? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks again for all this info you have already provided for us. Great stuff!

A thinner needle is easier to use.

Suggestion: I like your videos and I think it would be great if you filled some of the dead/quiet air time with narrative explaining in more detail what you are doing. That could bridge the gap when the video isn't super close up and allow you to mentor us with some of your pro tips! Keep up the great work :)

Clay, would you please share with us the food items besides the fish, grouse and deer you were able to forage? We noticed Biko had some strings of something in his pot. Wondering what you were able to find? Mushrooms, wild onions, berries,and rise hips and???? They kinda skip over the food. Any grains, cat tails, dandelions or what did you make teas out of? Just curious. Thanks so much.

Do you have to be sure to have all of the required line on your needle from the beginning, or can you weave in a new piece if you run out?

If you are interested in mending a hole in a gillnet I’d give you a lesson. Maybe do some skill trading deal. It’s what I do. Drift gillnet in Alaska. Also if I was in a survival situation I’d use your fishing line to build a gillnet web over the inner strands of para coard. Fish will see the para Coard net and won’t be as effective. You’ll catch a couple of the dumb ones but majority will swim up to the net and turn around. Here in Alaska single strand mono nets are illegal because like you say it becomes invisible in the water and is to effective as a killing net. I guess our F and G want to give our fish a fighting chance.

Man, I tried using mono to build a net and just couldn't get the hang of it. But they certainly do seem to be more effective in clear water!

I wish you had described everything you were doing making that frame for your net. I wish you had described how you got it off of the metal ring and what you did with those loose ends if you had to cut it off. I wish you had described how you were fastening it, using the knots around the edge of your frame. I wish you had described how you were wrapping that frame. It would still be trial and error for me to make that, except for creating the actual net itself.
