Knowing how to build the Classic Mors Kochanski Super Shelter is an essential winter woodland survival skill. In this video I look at version that is light to carry and quick to put up - All presented live from a winter wonderland.

Love your version. Here’s a tip. Stumble onto the SOL double size sheet of Mylar. It is way quieter due to the Mylar being bonded to plastic and resists tearing. With some clear packaging tape and safety pins I pin it to a poncho liner. Which makes it waterproof and extends it temperature rating with seasonal clothing to 30 F. The SOL double sized heat sheet would work great with your set up. Thanks for sharing your kit. Love your channel. I live in the mountains of Virginia. USA.

Great idea for the shelter Neil. One thing comes to mind is a short story by Jack London where a bloke builds his fire under a snow covered tree, snow melts and puts out the fire.

I've used this type of shelter at -20f . Great update on materials. I guess that it's time to update my kit. You've been been busy during lock down. Looks like you've got a lot of snow. All the best from this side of the pond.

Well done. The Kohanski Super Shelter can indeed make life much more bearable in very cold weather conditions. You've done a nice job of adapting the concept to your specific requirements. Although I do not hike/camp in those conditions due to my age and physical conditions, it is a good idea to be prepared nonetheless. I am going to try and further adapt the SS concept to my hammock camping requirements. It's got to be applicable, don't you think.

A good alternative 👍 .. thanks for that. I believe that the German Bundeswehr have a standard 'Super Shelter' setup for their troops using Issue Gear .. very similar to yours. Speaking under correction, for the Super Shelter to be effective, the 'Heat Energy' coming from the fire must be in the 'Visible Light' Spectrum .. open Flames .. the bigger, the better (within reason .. a forest fire would be somewhat an overkill .. and in more ways than one 😊). Very simply put, Short Wave Visible Light (Energy) can pass through a Clear Medium (glass / plastic/etc). Inside, it is absorbed by whatever is there and converted to a Longer Wave 'Radiated' form of Energy which cannot pass back out through the Medium .. thus the Converted Energy (heat) remains trapped inside. Therefore, an open flame fire will be much more effective than a smouldering coals one. I hope this helps. Should this be incorrect, corrections would be welcome. Take care .. Tommy

Great shelter. Wondering how it would stand up to strong winds in a blizzard and what modifications it would need for that type of snow storm.
@hansmeier9214
@hansmeier9214 3 жыл бұрын
In strong winds it is hard to start and obtain a fire. Without a fire (or sunbeams) the supershelter has not really a benefit. In my opinion it is then better to build a snow shelter or to hunker down under the tarp in an unexposed location .
@rockytopwrangler2069

..Good set up if in need ..Response to comments......Certainly If options were available , some type of windbreak at least for the fire ,,natural or manmade ,, but if in control of circumstances,, stay at the cabin and make a big pot of chili to weather the storm ... no need to be out.

I can't see the details on how to make this. Are the mylar and plastic the same size? Are they taped together at the top and open elsewhere? I'm assuming the plastic isn't underneath when you're inside so any condensation runs down onto the ground?
