The year 2023 has been declared by the United Nations as the International Year of the Millet, following a proposal by India, which wants to position itself as a global hub for millets.
It’s interesting how millets can help the world face the challenges confronting it.
Here’s what the Food and Agricultural Organization of the UN has to say about millets. As the global agrifood systems face challenges to feed an ever-growing global population, resilient cereals like millets provide an affordable and nutritious option, and efforts need to be scaled-up to promote their cultivation. “Millets can play an important role and contribute to our collective efforts to empower smallholder farmers, achieve sustainable development, eliminate hunger, adapt to climate change, promote biodiversity, and transform agrifood systems,” says FAO Director-General QU Dongyu.
How are millets healthier for you?
Millets are cereal, like rice or wheat, but used to be referred to as coarse cereals, an obvious reference to the external texture which is not smooth. All cereals are a rich source of carbohydrate but millets also come with more protein, dietary fibre, iron and calcium content than rice or wheat.
In a 2018 notification, the government says millets are a powerhouse of nutrients and that research had shown millets as good defence in the fight against diabetes. Millets have a low glycemic index, which means such foods have lesser impact on blood glucose levels than foods that are higher up in the index. To help consumers understand the benefits better, the government has changed the nomenclature from coarse grains to Nutricereals.
Why are millets said to be climate-friendly?
An article at ORFonline tells us that millets use 70% less water than rice; grow in half the time of wheat; and need 40% less energy in processing. They are hardy crops that can withstand extreme heat conditions.
Why did millets lose preference over the past few decades? What is the export market like?

@@K_Bharat_Kumar sir, there are many dessert that were made during all seasons. Kuttu ata roti and poori were favorite. Not many know, that daliya style breakfast has been staple of many people all over villages. And after I grew up, realised those Millets were then given to animals for better milk performance. With advent of quinoa as superfood people forget our own. But my father recalls wheat wasn't the main bread source and people couldn't afford it. Even water chestnut flour was used to make roti. Many villagers used to sell wheat and rice as cash crops and eat millets. Only when my father generation became well to do people could afford wheat and for a generation or so people forgot millet a d considered as animals fodder. It's true. If you go in depth in UP AMD bihar you would know that's the truth. Sorry for late reply. Somehow I didn't got the notification for the comments.

I have seen videos that state some 3rd world countries (often in tropical regions) import huge amounts of wheat when they have millet they could grow and be self sufficient, but the developed nations grow crops so efficiently they can export their crops for sale cheaper than local farmers can grow millets. this needs to be changed so these millet growing nations can begin to produce millet for self sufficiency and export because many developed nations would love to have more options at their groceries being millets can be used for all things wheats can be used for. Many of them don't have the wields wheats has per plant but science can change that.

MSP also mono cropping cultivation more subsidy on paddy and wheat than millets. Government only initiative MSP price increase for millets and other cereals.under NFHS -5 report 55.6 %women affected anemia’s and 20% children under nutrition. If food price increases automatically people demand for food reduced.

I love millets. Ground nut chutney mixed with cooked foxtail millet tastes yummier than with cooked polished rice. You you can make string hoppers (idiyappam/sandhavai/noodles) with kodo millet, banyard millet and pearl millet and mix them with lemon mix, tomato mix or with egg like lemon rice, tomato rice or egg rice. If you love coconut oil in cooking, you can add in a few spoons of coconut oil while cooking little millet, because the latter tastes a lot better with the former like an aroma therapy. You can make also puttu with millets and ragi puttu with beetroot is so delicious with sweetness from the beetroot.

If Indian Govt had so much brain, they should've known millet is resilient crop, needs far less water, environment friendly, needs far less pesticides, more resistant to insects, faster harvest. But, still Indian Govt chose rice /wheat over millet ! Why ? Bcoz it benefits pesticide makers, refined food making companies like Kellogg, middlemen in making profits etc.
