Ellen de Bruin will be joining us for a talk on why we shouldn’t go to business meetings. It’s not on how to do meetings more efficiently but on pointless and boring meetings are. According to her you shouldn’t go to meetings at all. They are an attack on freedom, creativity, joy of life, and cost too much time, energy and money.

I strongly agree. My meetings as a public school teacher are just used for propaganda and complaining

I often find that meetings are called by people who don’t do the actual work to tie up the time of the people who do.

She actually does have some good points such as: to keep your emotions in check - You cannot say career killing things out loud and the requires for self control. Meetings are like family interactions - often times people will manifest and attack you because of some cosmic reason that 99.9% of people will never understand.

Well, with 20 years of working with various companies, I can say that most of the meetings that I attended (quantifying, say 90%) could have been an email with carefully selected recipients, where I could have said 10x more than in those meetings. The rest of the 10% are the ones I set myself where I try to minimize attendees, and I make it as short as possible (the shorter the better).

I find meetings with colleagues and manager are helpful. Rather than no meetings at all its like sweeping something under the rug. I strongly disagree with u.
