To start out the new year, I figured I would make a video for those that are either first starting out as a freelance makeup artist OR for those that have been in the game for a while, but just aren't where they want to be.
Last year, I created a series of videos titled "Business For Makeup Artists" which has been very popular on this channel. This video basically wraps up the most important points from each one of those videos. If you want to hear a more in-depth topic discussion, please check out the playlist below!

Oh my gosh, my kit is ridiculous! I bought so much stuff. I new better when I did it but I love makeup. You are so right about not discounting your services. I have found that whenever I have done it in the past, I resent it when I’m doing the job and feel undervalued.

Haha FOR REAL! Overbuying is literally my #1 struggle as well and I just got done with removing things I never use. I used to discount my services or offer specials when I first started and that was such a mistake! Stick to your prices and you won't be sorry!!

Discounts sound like they make sense but people can be skeptical of cheap prices too.

@@julieruby It’s makeup forever. I currently live in Asia but very soon, will be relocating to the Midwest (Wisconsin) :) hopefully when things are better, I can work at a makeup counter (for the experience) and freelance.

Hi Julie! Thank you so much for this video, super helpful and informative as I’m doing more research on pursuing make up artistry. Question - do you think it’s useful for a bridal make up artist to have knowledge in all areas of artistry ie cinematic, photo shoots for campaigns and then eventually finding your niche in bridal?

Yes, I actually do think it's a good idea to gain knowledge in other areas of makeup artistry so you can make sure that bridal is the right niche for you :) I actually just uploaded a video recently talking about the different niches and also the reality of being a bridal artist. @@julieruby It helped take so much of guess work out for me as I am self taught and have finally made that move without much capital, to do make up as a service. Any advice on make up trial looks? Like the pricing? Should I offer them at 50% off the full price or perhaps 20% ?

@@keepingupwith_kavishka2990 Hey that's great to hear! For makeup trial looks, that's completely up to what your client wants. You'll have to consult with them :) I do have a video on bridal trials on my channel. It's on my "Business For Makeup Artists" Playlist. For pricing, that's also up to you as well! I personally charge the same amount for trials bc you are doing the same if not more work then. However, all makeup artists do this differently :)

@@julieruby awesome, really appreciate the advice and exactly! I was just going to ask, what is the difference of a bridal makeup trial as opposed to the brides' big day? Coz we doing the same thing not like we letting her walk out the door with half the face done lol, I think theres more deciding and finalizing during a trial look so yeahh I agree with you on that one.

@@keepingupwith_kavishka2990 Yes, I feel like you actually do more work for the trial since you're usually spending about a half hour to an hour longer on in the trial than on the day of. Consulting always takes longer so definitely charge however you'd like. Just make sure your time is compensated :)

Hi Zoey! I checked with the state board of cosmetology and they said that you only had to have it if you are working in a salon. If you freelance, it's pretty much a gray area to them!

I definitely see where you are coming from, but "business" doesn't necessarily describe the type of work it is. Overall, makeup artists are entrepreneurs and do run their own business. We have to legally protect ourselves and do our do diligence by filing taxes as a business owner every year too. In my opinion, it's what separates the makeup enthusiasts from the makeup artists :)

Can't know how I stopmed onto this. All in all Damn good video 🙌🙌. I also watched those similar from MStarTutorials and kinda wonder how you guys make these clips. MSTAR TUTORIALS also had amazing info about similiar things on his vids.
