Stetson cowboy hats are an iconic American accessory. The popular Skyline style will cost you $245, while other premium varieties can set you back $5,000. Over the years, famous figures like President Ronald Reagan and Beyonce have worn Stetsons, further solidifying the brand's image as the premier American cowboy hat. It's one of the few hat brands that have reached icon status. So what made Stetson so iconic? And is that why these hats are so expensive?

As a current cowboy hat seller I can tell you that Stetson is one of if not the most popular brand when it comes to cowboy hats. You get great quality with the hats and in some cases they can last for generations.

My grandfather had one of those hats. It was given to him when he was 17. He wore that hat until he died at 87. When you are out in the middle of the fields with your horse and blowing rain, or snow. You need a good hat to stay on your head. This is why quality is better than quantity.

There's two ingredients to brand success. Quality and recognition. Recognition comes at the cost of an earthy, functional reputation as high status generally means frilly and low function. It's the brands that want to last centuries that master a focus on quality in manufacturing while constantly seeking recognition and spotlight fame.

In August of 1999, I bought a Stetson pinched-front, in silver belly. It was marked as being 4 fur beaver. I've worn the thing every time I've left the house for nearly 24 years now, and it's still in one piece. So even though it shows it's age, I guess it's probably gonna out-last me. It cost me $250, way back then, so I don't even wanna think about what it would cost to replace it now.

I’d wager a guess, the choice was made based on practicality, availability, and iconography; the design overall is perfect for the frontier, where there’s little to no shelter the wide brim protects the wearers head from the sun, and since it was waterproof it could function as a makeshift bowl, the felt also provided insulation and warmth during the colder months. Natural fibre clothing industries were at their peak during the time, making accessibility to the hats easy; combined that with the relatively low-cost at the time thanks to the robust fur trade from Canada, a soldier could easily fined a replacement when his Stetson had worn out. Finally the hat was a symbol of the west even back then, with it’s strong look and being an item synonymous with the word ‘frontier’ it was easily identifiable and became the staple of the U.S cavalry since it was unique among the many units of the military.

In re: Stetsons used by the military... During the Indians Wars, a 'fedora' or 'brimmed campaign hat' was an issue item but it isn't anymore and hasn't been since War Two. Nowadays cav troopers [myself included] buy their own Stetson as a private purchase item. Nevertheless, it's as much a uniform item in a cav regiment as your fatigues are and it's an ass-whoopin' offense to mess with another trooper's brim. While there are several companies that produce a 'regulation' cavalry hat, but I personally spent the extra money for a Stetson. It remains a cherished memento of my service with the 11th 'Blackhorse' ACR.

I use to be a line-haul truck driver. In Alberta, Canada back then (the late 90s), 2X beaver cowboy Stetson could cost over 2k dollars to 5k dollars. I was in the State of Missouri at a truck stop. The truck stop had a cowboy hat store attached. I went in and found a 5X beaver hat. Guess how much they were asking for it. They were asking 50.00 dollars for the hat. Well, I thought I would be stupid to not buy it. When I walked up to the girl at the till, I asked her "Is this an error?" "What do you mean?" she asked. I replied "It says this hat is 50.00 dollars" "Yes that is the correct price" she stated Not being a stupid man, I shutup and paid her the 50.00 and walked out of the store, filled with joy.

The only thing I can think of it that Stetson *technically* sells their own take on it on their website, which is called the "Temple Fedora". But, I was told that old leather subjected to decades of sweat would have no doubt been the cause. I’ve thought about having it repaired. But, my grandfather has been gone for 30+ years, yet it still smells like the Old Spice and witch hazel he used in his hair that bleached & faded out the silk lining. But, what makes his hat even more special is that it was a gift to him from one of his closest friends when they were young, Al Capone.
