Jane Leelavathi This is not why. It is because it does not use water. Some dry cleaners don’t use a 2-in-1 process. Some dry cleaners take them out of the washing machines wet and transfer them to an actual dryer machine - just like most homes. Again, it’s because water is not used, but a solvent.

One of my first jobs in the early 2000's was as a front-end clerk at a dry cleaner's. I prepared orders in the computer, tagged the individual pieces, and sent them to those who worked the machines. When the clothes returned, I had to manually reassemble orders by searching through all the tags. The crinkled up, deformed, pain in the behind little tags. Then, bagged it up and put it on the front conveyer to wait for pick-up. OMG, I am SO jealous of there being a handheld scanner now!

The organic solvent he’s talking about is called TCE. There’s another one I think called PERC. They’re the leading cause for contaminated soil and groundwater across the country. It’s carcinogenic. Practice used to be to take filters outside and hose them down with water to clean them. This became runoff into the local soil and waterways.

@@silvasilvasilva Yes, though I am being facetious. People enjoy the humor that revolves around a Millennial being somewhat of a dunce, or underachiever (I'm sure you're quite aware of it, being a millennial yourself). As for age actually being related to dry-cleaning: Those that dry clean typically need it for special occasions. Those attending formal events, on a regular occasion, are probably in the "upper class" sector of society. And it typically takes you until your 40s to reach that upper class sector (typically). *We will eventually be the "Boomers" dry cleaning our clothes and Gen Z will marvel at this video. @@MyFortressConstruction Only too well! But this "social" phase can even happen earlier: For many people, there's a point in your late 20s to early 30s when all of your friends will be getting married, so dry cleaning is the way to go to keep using the same few "occasion" pieces over and over again (where I'm from, you don't expect guests to spend as much for a wedding as I know to be the case in the US, for example).

Yes, I did think dry cleaning involved dry cleaning rays! Or vacuums. Or dusting. I never thought there was any actual cleaning involved. "Dry cleaned" clothes seemed gross with accumulated filth so I've avoided them for decades! Wow, thanks for ddropping some knowledge.

Watching videos like this shows the huge gap between Industries in developed countries to developing countries. Here in Nigeria, DRYCLEANING business are mostly small or medium scale, mostly manually handled and not this mechanized , the cost of these equipments over here is a huge barrier. This disparity in scaling/ industrializing tells on the economy as well. We have a long way to go.

I bought this dry cleaning at home kit, where you put you spray the problem areas of your garment with a solution. Then you put the garment in a bag with wet dry sheet like cloth and put it the dryer. I thought this was how clothes was dry cleaned, since it is technically dry. Since I had the at home version, I hardly get stuff dry cleaned at the Laundry mat. Very interesting to learn it’s placed in a solution and maybe it’s good to get it done professionally!

It’s a bunch of carcinogenic, nasty chemical solvent. Not something you can exactly just run through your domestic washing machine. Half of the appeal of dry cleaning is that you skip all of these laborious steps anyways. You simply drop off the dirty stuff and walk away with the clean.

I run a dry cleaners.. solvent is highly toxic, first rule when dry cleaning is you do not leave that door open as the emissions of solvent can cause dizziness, sickness and in extreme cases death. The fact he smelt them AS soon as they came out shows me he probably doesn’t dry clean himself but managers the store which is fine but smelling it after etc is just so toxic. The machine completely soaks the clothes in solvent which then heats up and the remaining solvent is vaporised. The dry cleaning machine is really smart and if business insider wants a look at dry cleaning further I’m sure Timpson or Johnson Cleaners would be happy to give an in-depth view on how it all operators and how it’s run!☺️
