Truck escape ramps are used as a traffic tool on steep, sustained grades to check high vehicle speeds in emergencies. The ramps use a combination of momentum-halting media like gravel or sand and an incline to bring runaway vehicles to a halt.

that what happened on the lewsiton grade has alot of ramps one of the the ramp was frozen and just became a launching jump. kind of sad, then another issue where the trucker could not get to the ramp because of a school bus was in the way and the truck went the other way and flipped killing everyone in the truck my friend was in the school bus. it was horrific for them

Been driving a big rig 12 years. Thankful I've never had to use a run-away ramp. When I was a rookie driver an older driver with over 30 years experience told me something I'll never forget. He told me you can go down the mountain too slow 1000 times but you can only go down the mountain too fast 1 time. I get in the right gear, set my jake brake and coast down gradually. Driving a big rig requires great patience

@ronb1057

That older driver gave you the correct advice. It's all about correct gear selection when it comes to driving in the mountains, whether you are going uphill or downhill. Keep in the right rev range going uphill and the same applies when going downhill. You won't over tax the engine and diff. going uphill and save your brakes going downhill if you keep the engine rev's. in the right range.

I go up and come down Grapevine in California EVERY day at work and the chaos I see all the time... Brakes smoking, trailers on fire at the bottom of the mountain, traffic backups from where trucks have turned over...that's all it takes to get to the bottom...patience.
@ronb1057
@ronb1057 2 жыл бұрын
@@KHAOE1 The problem is that they are not teaching drivers in truck driving schools, on the correct use of the gear box on a manual transmission, when driving through mountainous terrain. It's all about being in the correct gear whether you are going uphill or downhill and and closely watching your engine RPM. If you are going uphill, being in the correct rev range will save your engine from overheating and save your differential for overheating. Going downhill you will save the brakes, if you select the correct gear for the downhill gradient with the load in mind. With automatic transmissions the principle is the same but just done a little differently by putting the transmission in a lower gear than one would use on level ground. Again, watch the revs!
@KHAOE1
@KHAOE1 2 жыл бұрын
@@ronb1057 I agree!!! Being in the correct gear is crucial. Grapevine is 35 mph downhill for trucks. California Highway Patrol sits A LOT on that mountain to make sure trucks and cars are going the correct speed limit. Even though signs are posted with the speed limit before the downgrade starts, trucks do not slow down and that's where the problem starts.

My uncle lost his brakes right after passing the runaway ramp. He kept up shifting until the engine ran out of rpms at the top gear. Then he put it in neutral and held on. He hit over 100 (possibly way more) mph at the bottom of the pass. The Speedo only went to 85 but the needle was pegged to the end after a few miles the brakes cooled and he screeched to a long, slow stop. He did a walk around, made sure that everything was ok and went on his way. Moral of the story kids? When you’re maxed out, start the decent at 15mph, don’t touch the brakes or gas.

KRATO KAT those roads you see in the video are called escape ramps for truck, they are made so that if truck have a mechanical problem with their breaks, the truck driver will steer his truck into that road so it stops his truck and so he doesn’t crash into another car if the cars start stopping which could kill some people, in this video it shows 3 escape ramps and it explains how those escape ramps are able to stop huge out of control trucks

I was driving through west Virginia in a 6x6 army semi truck that had been converted to a tow truck. I was towing a school bus. My brakes where fading bad and the Jake brake was not helping very much in the 120,000lb rig. I thought about hitting a runaway ramp but I was afraid that the MUCH higher ground clearance and taller and wider tires of the 6x6 would cause the truck to not slow down enough. Luckily I was able to slow down enough to hold the road and I'm glad I didnt risk the ramp

One of those ramps once saved the life of Argentine football team Huracán in 2016. They played a Copa Libertadores playoff match against Caracas FC in Venezuela, and when traveling back to the airport, their bus lost its brakes. The driver took a runaway ramp with a high slope and it ended flipping on its side. Nobody suffered serious injuries, aside from a few players needing surgery and having to sit out for several months. I dont even want to imagine what would have happened if the ramp wasnt there and that bus went downhill with no brakes instead.

At 2:48, you have a image of the Union Quarry emergency ramp, Mount Barker Road, Leawood Gardens, South Australia. Prior to 2000, the Mt. Barker Road was 10 km of winding road, going through Eagle on the Hill, with gradients up to 13%. The old road had 2 arrester beds. One by Mesdaes Hill, which was a curving dirt road up a hill, with a bed of gravel on the top of the hill, which the truck would get through in most cases. The second ramp is the one you featured. In 2000, a new alignment was opened up, which has a 8 km constasnt 7% gradient, which ends at a set of traffic lights, just past the old Tollgate. This intersection is one of the busier ones within the Adelaide metropolitan area. Prior to the new road being opened up, there would be a truck accident on the hill once a week on average. Now, the accidents are once a year, but, they are more horrific. Police and the Mermaids have run an aggresive campaign to keep trucks off their brakes; a 60 km/h speed limit has been placed on vehicles over 4.5 tonne Gross Vehicle Mass, and all buses. Two speed cameras have been installed, and it is automatic loss of licence if you are caught speeding coming down the hill. Due to the nature of the gravel that is used in the beds, we refer to the ramsp as "Kitty Litter!"

I notice alot of people thinking it costing $10,000 dollars to recover the rig and tens of thousands more to repair the rig. The cold plain maths is the one the Insurance company looks at. You use the ramp the insurance company thinks, this driver just saved us anywhere from $200,000 if minor incident to millions on big incident. A loss of life makes the expense of the Ramp and repairs cheap in comparison. We have seen trucks in Australia go through houses and kill everyone in cars in bad incidents. A Ramp makes it safer for everyone. The drive up the highway to Toowoomba is interesting and on the way down even more so. I hate being in front of trucks on that road because of the grade. Going up all the trucks are in low gear and having a tought time, going down all the trucks are doing way under the speed limit and less than the recommended speeds. Gradient is as high as %10.5 with tight corners as well.

You know what winds me up ? When people use exponentially when it's not exponential, like at 3:30. If I remember correctly, tension forces increase linearly with extention. It could be quadratic. But it is definitely not exponential. Just say "it increases the further the truck travels"

Coming into Adelaide, South Australia we have a few as the highway into Adelaide has a long, steep hill to go down. Few years back we had a wave of poorly trained truckies burning out their brakes and not realising until they passed the last arrester bed and approached traffic lights, taking our cars at the large intersection at the bottom of the hill. Now, no truck is allowed to go over 60kmph (road speed 110kmph) down the hill, using their gears to control the speed. To use these beds, it cost up to $10,000 to recover the truck but the damage done to the truck I believe makes it a write-off as the gravel completely shreds the bottom of the vehicle.

This is the first I hear of these. Any in Canada? Really neat stuff... Sucks that there's no way to stop a runaway truck mechanically or electronically in 2019 though... :/

The mechanical arrestor ramp shown near the end is located in North Bay ON. Lose your brakes on the hill, and you'll rip through the downtown, and finish your trip in Lake Nippissing. Interestingly enough, there are signs at the top of the hill telling truckers to stay in the left travel lane, since the arrestor ramp is positioned in the middle of the road...

They exist only in the mountainous areas. I live in Ohio, which is pretty flat. So, there are none of these ramps in my state, as far as I know. However, when I visited Colorado, I saw a ton of these ramps along I-70, in the Rockies west of Denver.

@@trygveevensen171 Well, you won't find these pits in hilly areas. We got hilly areas here in Ohio, but we don't have these pits. They're only in mountainous areas. For example, if you are on I-70 going eastbound into Denver, there is a very steep drop that goes on for four or five miles. There is a big change in elevation once you go east of Denver. I saw quite a few of those pits along that stretch of highway. A runaway truck would keep gaining speed along this steep grade, so that's why those pits are needed.
@trygveevensen171
@trygveevensen171 3 жыл бұрын
@@hamsterama that might just be it. The roads here are generally either pretty level or the speed limit is low. Most of our highways are along the coast so there's fairly little variation in altitude

Means a truck with broken brakes had to cross through the upcoming traffic to end up in the sand bed.
