Why Zellige Tiles Are So Expensive | So Expensive

#Tiles
Zellige tiles are one of Morocco's most valued and recognizable art forms. But this type of tile isn't cheap, especially compared to other popular machine-made tiles. A square foot of Zellige tiles can cost $50. Compare that to ceramic subway tiles, which might only cost $0.15 per square foot. The craft of making Zellige tiles is centuries old, but it may be dying as young artisans lose interest in the trade. So why are Zellige tiles so expensive? And how is Morocco preserving this valuable art?

The funny thing is that some newly created countries arround decided to have some sort of heritage and started nicking the Morrocan one which has been built up over centuries and centuries to bring up to where it is now! To my opinion Morocco officials in charge were slow to react, how ever thanks a lot for your video sir.

Working with clay really has given me a place where I can engage in some healthy introspection, sort of all you can really do when you're in the studio alone coning clay and making bowls or plates or whatever. I really hope more young people are able to find their way into it because its a beautiful medium and the world would be poorer with out Zellige.

The clay from which these tiles are made is only found in the areas surrounding the city of Fez. Therefore, this industry only exists in this city, from which the name of the Fasian court was taken.

@@safuwanfauzi5014 the ummayad didn't last long in north africa and especially in morrocoo, to have an influence of any kind, their invasion was resisted for more than 60 years and after they took the region they lasted for less than 30 years in which they were hated by the population cause they were violent racist colonizer thiefs, and their only goal was looting the locals, until the revolution against them started in the year 740 and they were kicked out from current day morroco for good, after they were defeated by morrocan revolts in the battle of bakdoura and the battle of al achraf. Architecture wise, you can see the real oamayad architecture in the omera palas in curent day Jordan, and you ll realize that it has nothing to do with the glorious handcrafts and architecture we have in morroco.

The Zelij technique goes back to 10-11th century. It started in east of Algeria with hamadid dynasty, a branch of zirid dynasty. The zelij travelled to andalousia (present south of Spain), then back to Algeria, but in Tlemcen this time, and finally reached Fez which managed to keep this tradition vibrant
