How To Make Bricks From Plastic Trash | World Wide Waste

A company shreds, melts, and molds a secret mixture of hard-to-recycle plastics to make solid bricks and beams. The building materials are cheaper and faster to assemble than most traditional ones. The system has helped increase waste collectors' income and address a shortage of school buildings in Ivory Coast.

I build and ran recycling plants like these for years in Canada. What these people aren't telling you is the amount of toxins and pollution that plants like these produce. First, I don't see a single piece of protective equipment in that factory. Pelletized and extruded plastics let off A LOT of toxic chemicals that the workers are breathing in, and that are being released into the local environment. Second, the pelletized plastic gets everywhere. We found that, even though we tried to manage it, the pellets would end up miles away as micro plastics in the water and food supply. Thirdly, it takes A LOT of water to wash these plastics before extruding it. I'll wager they're not taking any steps to recover and clean this water so wherever they're dumping it, you're ending up with bits of plastic, food waste from containers etc. This causes huge algae blooms, which is something we witnessed from our own factories, which pollute the water and kill fish stocks. Don't be fooled. This is not clean and green. It's money.

Another thought came to my mind about building with plastic blocks is that they're flammable and burn pretty quickly. Fire departments have discovered something similar with engineered wood products. Those wooden I-beams that have been taking the place of solid wood floor joists burn through twice as quickly. Resulting more rapid floor collapses once a fire starts.

@antagonizerr
@antagonizerr Жыл бұрын
@@aberba One thing I didn't mention was food waste in the plastic severely increases risk of infection on cuts and scrapes. I spent nearly $500/month on medical supplies and protective clothing for my staff. That and rebreathers to keep them from inhalation of residual toxins. Second, it needs dedicated water tanks to keep the wash water isolated from lakes and rivers. This water is treated with chlorine to kill bacteria, filtered through screw presses to remover paper pulp from labels and kept in a closed loop. Last, is closed cell netting all around the property to prevent micro plastics escaping. When it gets ground up, it blows like dust so you need to contain it.

Besides the health risks, this is only solving a tiny tiny part of the issue of plastics. BUT by building schools and having a space to educate children, the future will be better overall. "the best use for recycled plastic"? You think plastic is recycled? How about fairies at the bottom of the garden? 50% of all the plastic collected in the UK a couple of years ago (680,000 tonnes) was exported and went to either landfill or incineration, mostly i places like Malaysia or Indonesia. Recycling has always been somewhere between a scam and a joke, and the UK government has tacitly admitted as much recently with an announcement that people would be discouraged from collecting too much material for recycling, particularly plastic.

Unfortunately, plastic is a terrible structural or surface material. It erodes five hundred times easier than stone, becomes brittle when cold and can snap like an icicle, or melt when exposed to direct sunlight. The manufacturing process is terrible and releases micro toxins everywhere. It's a horrible industry more detrimental than even producing new plastic thanks to modern refineries. Either way new or old, plastic is both a blessing and curse onto society.

all they need worry about is their proprietary processing being looked after and they could literally use one factory to train and build the next ones ... once they have built all the structure for the new factory and got training on doing it ... they then build their own factory neat their place and source locally from there ... they get their molds and proprietary needs from the designers and their profits from the work ... and they can now train more people and make their building ... as they grow they can even make their own addons and train the new staff they will need as well ... get ahead of the local garbage ... and then get imports and exports of product for profit .. and all of those small factories now have a steady inflow of product to make stuff to sell world wide

What chemicals does it off gas? Is there any fire retardant in it? Is the smoke when it does burn deadly? Is it structurally sound within the expected temperature range? This whole process could also probably give you cancer just looking at it.

I saw lots of picnic tables made this way and within weeks, they sagged badly and had to be replaced with conventional wood ones. I would be worried about off-gasses and I'd never trust this material for structural use....and what about fire resistance? Likely has none and could produce dioxins, furans, mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls (better known as BCPs) in the event of a fire.

And when the television was first invented in 1927, it was a 70” OLED w/remote and apps?? Things evolve over time as the process is refined and new technologies come to light. Just look at how far personal drones have come….or even gaming consoles, in such a short relative time. The same with recycled plastics, it’s going to take time to hit the milestones.
