THIS rating is regarding Standard Constructed
Today, I'm rating Surge Engine, a mtg spoiler for the upcoming set, the brothers war. This card seems to be dividing people, and I give you my thoughts on it's power level and how it might shape Standard with the release of the new set.

I am going to wait until browar goes live on arena before passing judgment on this one. It's very easy to under or overestimate a card when you analyze it in a vacuum.

That’s very true. It could be that it’s not good enough but I think that’ll be a symptom of more powerful cards than this one being released. I think objectively speaking this is a good card, and it’s an artifact which means it only stands to grow in power as we get into an artifact focused set.

Amazing card!!! Can't wait to use it!! Particularly with delver looks like a sick tempo option

Think this is gonna be a staple in blue decks. Outside of Delver this seems by far like the best aggro option in blue. The synergys with Tezzeret and the other artifact support coming is gonna be fun

It basically has Level Up, but if you got it to lose defender or become blue another way you could skip to the last two options. You shouldn't build around that, obviously. I don't like how the last mode is usable once, but it's still good.

this should be compared to good old Figure of Destiny which was the first card with similar system. This is less agressive and seems to be more geared to be played as a threat/wincon in control decks I think it will be a really strong card

i think its amazing. and the 4UU ability is pricey but a 3 card draw at the end of your opponents turn is a solid reload.

I thought it was only until end of turn @ first, so I thought it was garbo, but since it doesn't reset, seems fine.

I misspoke at the end and said “8 mana invested” when it’s really 12 🤔🤔 you know what I mean! 😂

I playtested the card & its great in the right deck. On the backfoot its still a big blocker. When ahead, its a must kill card, since it grows to level 2 so quickly & is so big. Level 3 being only once is ok to me. 1 activation is really strong enough. You should not be able to repeat that imo

Took me a moments to realize there's no ''until end of turn''. I guess this is why it might seem bad at first sight. It reminds me of delver, aetherling and opportunity mashed together.

can someone explain what “becomes blue” means

When the card is played, it is a colorless artifact creature. When you pay the one blue mana to activate the ability, it becomes blue. This matters for cards that say “destroy Target blue creature” or for cards that care about how many blue creatures you have, etc
