When I was growing up, my mom always made cake mix cookies that we called “Pudgy Fudgies.” It’s the same method you tried, but with a devil’s food cake mix (+ 2 eggs and 1/2 c oil) and a combination of semisweet chips and butterscotch chips. Trust me-they’re AMAZING! I still make them all the time as an adult, and my friends and coworkers always love them!

As for the Jello frosting trick, when I was a kid my mom/aunties used to make Italian meringue frosting with Jello. The trick is to actually dissolve the Jello with a bit of hot water (concentrated, not like the package says). Then put the dissolved Jello on the meringue (using table spoons so you can control the color/flavor) so it will color and give a bit of the Jello flavor to it (and as a bonus, will help the meringue stay in place).

My family does this but with cream cheese icing and pudding mix! A nice white chocolate pudding makes it really flavorful :) this also works for colored puddings like chocolate or strawberry, as long as you let the pudding firm up ahead of time there's no gritty texture!

I understand why this works but aside from maybe the extra stability from the gelatin, what's the benefit of this over the regular recipe? It appears to take the same time as a regular italian merengue, and you really could do better with flavors than jello artificial ones.

Learned a lot from this video!! However I would like to see a re-do of the cake mix with the soda. DONT USE THE BEATERS! Just fold the two ingredients until combined. The point here is to try not to pop the carbonation bubbles, therefore making a fluffier cake! I've experimented with both techniques and it does make a difference.

I agree except for 2 of them (that I know of from experience). She shouldn't have used an electric mixer with the soda cakes. If you over-mix the batter or let them sit too long before putting the oven, they sink in the middle like hers did, and really messes with the texture. The other one she could've done differently was the Jell-O one. You want to, at the very least, pre-dissolve it in a little water first and ideally give the powder 2-3 pulses in a food processor or blender to make a finer powder. Both help immensely in eliminating the graininess that she complained of.

I make the cake mix w soda a lot since it's super quick not needing any other ingredients, and even use flavoured seltzers. I've found cutting down the liquid to 8-10 oz is the magic amount. You can tell by the texture when pouring it in what's right for a cake batter. I do agree it does have less integrity than a normal cake but it's fine for a sheetpan cake and something quick.

The myth that kind of annoys me is the “add an extra egg, milk instead of water, and butter instead of oil” hack for making a boxed cake mix taste like it’s from a bakery. I’ve used this hack, and the butter definitely makes the cake more dense which can be handy, but the entire concept ignores the fact that professionally made oil cakes exist for a reason. Carrot cake is a good example of an oil cake that tastes amazing. Not every cake needs butter in it, and there’s nothing wrong with using oil because it serves a purpose too!

I usually only do the box mix/soda technique with cupcakes, and it turns out GREAT! Maybe since there’s less surface area with a cupcake than a whole cake, but that’s just my guess. I’ve grown up doing the soda + cake mix recipe for a quick easy dessert while camping! We would basically make a version of a “cobbler” in the Dutch oven. Dump fruit of choice in, cake mix, and pour the soda. No mixing necessary, just needed hot enough coals on the fire and it made a great dessert for Girl Scouts 😁 plus we wouldn’t have to worry about bringing any ingredients that required refrigeration like eggs.

Years ago I would fill mini muffin tins with chocolate chip cookie dough and after they came out of the oven before they cooled and popped out of the tray, I would lightly push in the middle to make a dent (not all the way to the bottom) and then fill that with chocolate pudding. Sugar cookies could have lemon curd or some sort of preserves. It was great for little desserts at a party.

A little bit (like two tablespoons) of vanilla pudding in your whipped cream makes a great frosting.

When I do the cheater way out, and make cake from a box, I usually get rid of the water and substitute it for milk. But make sure that you are measuring the milk with how much water it is calling for. Instead of the veggie oil, I melt the same amount butter as veggie oil, and with the eggs, I add in another one, just to make the cake a bit fluffier. I also add in about 3 tablespoons of mayo or sour cream, and a splash of vanilla, the cake turns out so yummy! My husband isn’t a big cake fan, but when I started making the box cake mix like this, he can’t get enough of them🤤. I highly recommend giving it a try🤠!

Food myth videos are always fun! You’re right about the mayonnaise in the cake! It doesn’t really affect the taste, but my mom and grandma like to add mayonnaise or even sour cream for a more rich and moist cake.

This is great seeing you bust these myths and hacks. I've heard the koolaid one before especially when you are trying to make red frosting to use a red koolaid like cherry to get a base colour then add food colouring to bump it up to red, otherwise it case take so much food colouring to make red and not pink frosting that it doesn't taste good. A tool I highly recommend for measuring sticky ingredients: there is a measuring cup for this that has a plunger bottom inside a cylinder. You adjust it to the measurement you want then once filled push up the bottom and just scrape off the flat surface to get all your ingredient. It's great for not only things like honey but also peanut butter.

I'm the video when Ro put jello in frosting it reminded me of when my mum put jello mix in cake batter to add colour and flavour and it turned out so good!

I use the 7-up one with cupcakes. I use a white cake mix and use 7UP, then seperate them to make rainbow/tie dye cupcakes. I dont know why but the 7up mix has much more vibrant colors than the usual oil/egg/water method plus food color. I supsect its cause the 7up is essentially a clear product, ala clear vanilla.

Brownies😍 I was just looking at an article on how brownies come out by changing one ingredient like butter, oil, or shortening. Or depending on a metal or glass pan. As well as cooking temp. It was amazing to see the differences.

Oof. Yeah, the quintessential parts of Angel food cake are that, as a foam cake, it doesn’t use leaving agents and it doesn’t use fats. So I imagine the oil and egg yolks from the hack would ruin it pretty quick😅
