How to Prune Rhododendrons?
In this video i will show you how to size control your rhododendron safely. If you choose to prune your rhododendron do it right after they are done blooming. Look for lateral buds (they will develop new healthy growth). General rule is not to cut more than 1/3 of a plant.
Good luck!
Yuliya.

About 5 yrs ago a friend bought a house and wanted the Rhododendron from the front porch removed. It was about 10 feet tall. I spent several hours digging it up and tied it to the back of my Blazer to take it home. Several more hours to replant it. With in a few weeks it looked dead. The entire plant died except the root and now it is about 4-5 feet tall and blooms a nice light pink. I'm so glad it survived what I put it through.

We have 19 rhodies on our property and all but three of them are at least 43 years old. My husband and I trim them every other year after they bloom. One year I pruned them severely leaving only three limbs and no leaves. We had new growth within a month. Rhododendrons grow like weeds here in the western part of Pacific Northwest. The years we don’t prune them back, I take time to pinch off the spent flowers. Makes the plants look nice.

Excellent video!! My Dad and oldest Brother had a wonderful landscaping business for many years. They have long passed and I can no longer ask them questions on how to best take care of my garden. Your explanation was so clear and encouraging. I have rhodies that were planted by my brother 35 years ago. I pruned them quite a few years ago but haven't done it in a very long time. They now are huge and their trunks are so thick. I don't want to kill them, especially because of their nostaglia value. Your instructions of not pruning back more than 1/3 answered my most important question! Bless you, Yuliya!!!🥰🥰🥰

I've been working in horticulture for 40+years, including teaching. This is the first time that I have had to hard prune a Rhododendron. I always think it's worth revising activities which are unfamiliar to you, even when one knows the principles. Your video was invaluable - succinct and practical. I feel confident to undertake the task. I always use Felco secateurs though. Thank you. Clive U.K.

I tried to remove an enormous rhodie that has been in my yard for 20 years, and never bloomed (probably because it was shaded out by norway maples). I literally tried to dig it out by the root. The root was *huge* so I gave up. But I did not even fill the hole back up with dirt. Now the plant is growing back, and looks beautiful. It might even bloom this year. If it does, I will give it back some dirt. These shrubs are hardy!!!

Thank you. I cut my Rhododendron by 1/3 two years ago and again by 1/3 this past spring. I did not fertilize however. I plan to cut 1/3 again next spring. It had become a tree and I was afraid that I might kill it because I was removing all leaves cutting down to the trunk. It is coming back beautifully. It will still be a bit too tall when I've finished. I may have to cut again. This time I will feed it after I cut it. Thank you i always enjoy watching you and I learn a good bit.

Thank you for this video! Your correct about cutting to much..I had one my father in law planted that was breathtaking beautiful but because was to large...I started the first few years cutting it back but my husband wanted me to cut it back a little more. It didn't make it and never came back I totally regret that. However I do have the other one that's pink like yours and it's needed some care and it's tall but the smaller new growth isn't doing as well thanks to you I now know why she's not getting enough sun. I just bought a house in Oregon, we inherited an overgrown yard of pine trees, bushes and rhododendrons. They were finished blooming when we first saw the yard and moved in. We get a lot of rainy overcast days. I don’t anticipate ever having to water. I do wonder about feeding them, they have been neglected for at least 10 years. The home was owned previously by an older couple. This video is Very helpful, thank you so much. I can see the vision Of what my yard can be. I will be planting hydrangea too. ❤️👍

Loved the pruning you make it simple hahaha sounds simple...i will have to let you know. Mine are sprawling appear to be weakish and floppy, they seemed to grow too fast after removed from pot, and had been in pots for over a year. Hopefully after spring i can regain their compact-ish shape they had when in pot!

very good presentation...I have two rhodies that were here when we moved in 28 years ago. One I cut back to about 30 inches when we moved in because it was so scraggly and it has never looked back. They are now about 13 feet high and are very gorgeous but the blooms this year are more spread out than last year which was an awesome presentation so I am going to prune them back. One trick an old gardener told me at the very beginning is to pick off the old flowers at the brown rings at the base of the flower. This helps the bush to produce more blooms. Thank you for your info. Blessings

Excellent video Yuliya. Just what my wife needs. I was trying to explain how some rhodies in the northwest (Washington State flower) grow rather "out of control". Mine was done some time ago, but I can see the new growth, they're small plants that I just put in last fall, I do have one that I planted about 4 yrs ago that isn't doing anything, so it's got another yr to get it's self together or it's gone, I do have another with a lot of new growth at the bottom, I'm thinking after watching you I'm going to chop it back, it has black spot or something, so I'm going to cut that off an treat the good. wonderful explanation! I appreciate how you both show and explain!!! :) Mine just finished blooming and I'm ready to trim. I've noticed the bottom 1/2 of the plant on one side is just branches (not green growth) while the top and other side are lush. (could be the fence/neighbors house blocks sun there) We're happy with the height. Should I trim some off the top to make the bottom grow in better? And/or trim back all those scraggily brown branches? or.. what do you recommend?

Hey, thanks for the video. I see it was posted at the end of last May. I have lots of new sprouts and have flowers that need to be deadheaded now. Is this an ok time to prune all of the long new sprouts/stems? I have lots of Rhodies and want to shape them back. I've done a few online searches and it says do it in late Winter..UGH! I want to be able to see out my living room window now!! Thank you Y Garden =)
