@matej nemec actually it doesn't require that at all. It used to be kinda like that, but only because you'd regularly be matched against people with thousands of hour of play. But since then they added skilled based matchmaking, so you can play with people who have put just as much into it as you have. That was added after this review actually, so that's not reflected in this review. And the player based has been growing pretty steadily because these changes make it more accessible. After about 5-10 hours, you'll have basically everything you want unlocked. The game is generally well balanced, so off meta guns actually offer an some advantages you can exploit over meta guns (usually being able to fire faster, with a larger ammo pool, at the sacrifice of bullet speed, damage at range, and wallbang power). Depending on your play style, you may actually prefer off meta loadsouts (I generally do) And its a FPS after all, so other than learning maps, peak spots in compounds, bullet lead times at different distances and specific aural clues (which gun just fired, and how far it is away etc.) putting in alot of hours in doesn't really give you any real statistical advantage. But since your playing with people at the same experience level, it's fun wherever you are. Play a couple hours a week, or a few hours a day, you'll have fun either way.

I got 50 hours in after the review, and I'm finally becoming a reaper of men. It took about 70 hunters, countless hours, and a lot of nice people teaching me and putting up with me. And I just breached a boss compound. Blew a hole in the chest of one hunter with my shotgun, with my allies flanking. What followed was an 8 man skirmish like nothing I've played. It pushed every aspect of my gaming skill set. Listening, spotting and head shotting someone from across a swamp. Desperate flanks as I tried to save my pinned partner. Getting capped and rescued. Nothing like it.

The fact that there's no time limit on reviving your downed ally is such a smart gameplay choice - one among many. It lets you focus entirely on the fight you're in, and doesn't punish you with a dead teammate after you manage to win a stressful 1 v 2.

So firstly, I wanna give a big word of thanks to Skill Up for this video. Hunt went on a 50% sale recently, and while I'd been interested in it for a while because of the theme and art design of the game, I'd always been on the fence about getting it due to the polarizing nature of its reviews. This video got me to take the leap and spend money on Hunt, and I literally haven't stopped playing it since: it's everything described in this video and MORE! However, I do think it's important to note that this video was made a year ago: the game has changed a lot since then. It's the unfortunate downside of literally the best introductory Hunt video being made a year beforehand with nothing made recently coming close... this video is outdated in some major ways. That's not a real criticism of the video, it's more a commendation of Hunt itself: a LOT of the issues in the 'downsides' section haven't actually crystalised for me at all, and from the research I've been doing its because the devs have steadily been working tirelessly to fix them for the last year. So to start with, the matchmaking. With 10 hours of gameplay, I haven't been matched against someone more than 3 levels above mine (with one rank 84 exception on my squad, who was loading in with a level 1 hunter sans even a medkit XD). This is probably because of an influx of new players during the sale of course, but suffice it to say that when there are new players for it to find... the matchmaking DOES work. I haven't experienced any trouble finding people willing to play with me either, in fact I've mostly been playing with other new players. The one and only time I got a rank 84 hunter matched with me, he not only communicated well and readied up immediately, but was also invaluable in teaching me some fundamentals about the game. All in all, if my experience is anything to go by, matchmaking for newer players seems to be better than it's ever been. Secondly, punishment. Hunt now has a very important feature that was added after this video: firstly, your training character is now carried across to the main game, meaning you can start with all the essential tools Skill Up reccomends for free, but there's a far more important feature than that which I'm going to give it's own weight: For the first 10 levels, YOU CANNOT LOSE ANYTHING. Not a hunter, not any gear. Nothing. To make it even clearer, after 8 hours I'm level 5 and I've successfully extracted 3 times in a row, all of which means the amount of XP I've gained is above average. I think it's fair to say that for the average player you can estimate getting 10-15 hours at least of concequence free gameplay before hitting the meat of the game. This is very VERY important, as it's essentially 10-15 hours of completely free practise before you lose everything, something that honestly Tarkov could learn from. Also, for those first 10 levels skill based matchmaking is turned on. You can opt in to turn it off after, but those first 10 levels are clearly designed as a taster to get you aquainted with the basics. TLDR: This video is fantastic, with the only 'flaw' being how much Hunt has improved since it was made. If you were hovering around Hunt, saw this video and were enamoured with the concept, there literally isn't going to be a better time to start than right now when I post this comment. The game is currently just finishing a sale, so it is full of new players like me to play with. The matchmaking is working fine and to be honest the game seems to be experiencing a renaissance. Happy Hunting!
@XShrike0
@XShrike0 2 жыл бұрын
I would clearify that it is the first 10 Bloodline levels and not Hunter levels. Also Skill Based Matchmaking is a relatively new feature, that wasn't there for this video. When it is turned on, it helps avoid playing against higher ranked players. Except in Quick Play. Man, do I run into a lot of 5 and 6 star players. Outside of that I agree with everything else.

I'm playing 'solo' (mostly with randoms) right now, and honestly providing you're willing to look up some guides and dedicate yourself to getting better while you play, it constantly gives back to you for your effort. An important feature that was added pre this video is that you can't lose ANYTHING for the first 10 levels, so you have a decent amount of time to get used to the flow of the game before it starts remotely punishing you for failure, and the harder you find it the longer you get to acclimate. I got hunt 3 days ago because of this video, and haven't looked back! Like you said in your video, people will not understand that the game isn't meant to be fast paced, the gunplay isn't supposed to be extremely fluid. But when you put more than 7-8 hours in, you start to realize that the game is more complex and beautiful than everything seems

@@solid5502 Bit of an old comment, but if you still haven't bought it, please do. I know people who have 3000+ hours in the game. I, myself, have 800 hours. This game challenges you in ways you didn't think would be possible. And, as described in the review, I am exactly like those people mentioned, I love getting my ass handed to me until I can hold my own and perform well, being ignored by players until I can earn their respect. Very, very few games give you the sense of achievement and make you want to risk it all over again and again to have that one feeling you get by beating all others. This review is to get people interested so obviously it can't cover every little thing, but a couple things not completely talked on is how the skill cap is so ridiculously high. It's very common for people to shoot by sound in this game, through walls or even through the floor above or below them. Clues grey-out areas of the map and people with enough game knowledge can very accurately predict where enemy teams will be based on that alone. Buildings in compounds have tons of cracks-peeks and tiny openings. Once you learn how to use them, or where they might be. Fights get even more tense, and fun.

People don't be scared!!! 1. I had fun since minute one in this game! 2. Do NOT care about your KD. You will start with 0.X for sure and climb slowly, until you start wiping servers! 3. If you do not want to play solo (which has it's advantages like independence and freedom of movement) there are discord servers where people look for a group (very nice and friendly people; you just have to find a partner with a matching playstyle) 4. The servers skillup is playing on are looking lagy for me. I didn't have any ping problems on European servers (I heard NA West are also fine) 5. The game isn't that dark for me. 6. You can choose the maximum size of player parties. That being max of 2 or max of 3. 7. All weapons are balanced. You can win gunfights with cheap weapons vs the best one in the game. Sometimes it does not even will like a disadvantage because you don't care if you die and just give the guy a quick headshot. He on the other hand is under a ton of pressure. 8. To make it very clear: with real money you can buy only cosmetic stuff!

So, I bought this game because this video recommended me to it. I went ahead, bit the bullet, bought the game and I've got maybe only fifty or sixty hours in there since I bought the bad boy. I've played when the servers are hopping, when they're dead, and I'm playing my first event as of today with "As the Crow Flies." Call it necro-posting, but I'm kind of doing a check back in, feedback kind of thing. So, by and large if the video above doesn't get you sold on it, then either A, nothing will. Or B, get the game on sale and go out on a limb, it really is a cool game with a lot of replayability. But mostly, I'm here to kind of assuage and clear up any worries of some sort you might have. This video gave me a -lot of hype- towards how stressful the game is and I think for the first twenty hours I was too scared to actually play the game or be useful to my team mates. The consequences really aren't that bad. Your money is hard to come by, sort of, but it's not nearly so precious as like, your bonds or whatever. It's not like that thousand dollars is never coming back to you, you -will- get more money, and you -will- get your cool stuff and big bad-ass hunters back, just... It takes some work. To really illustrate the impermanence of your losses, one decent victory will un-do a whole series of bad matches, trust me. I spend most of my day getting pinged in the nugget across the match, or being forced into an immolator and getting punched to death. Or my favorite is trying to hide and hearing the dreaded wail of a hive -right behind you in the barn you're trying to hide in-. You die. Stupidly. A LOT. And as such you get used to it and it stops being such a problem to lose your stuff. Three matches or so with free hunters and one good and lucky run on the bounties and you'll have your tier two with a bomb lance and stuff in no time. Don't assume the learning curve means you won't win. It -is- steep. Like, really steep. For Honor meets Dead by Daylight at high ranks kind of steep. But just because it's steep, doesn't mean it's like those two games with the way you have to learn. Often than not in DbD or For Honor, you learn by getting your ass handed to you on repeat and then learning by eventually getting a lucky guard in or something or out-maneuvering the killer with a chance spin and then perfecting that technique. Hunt isn't like that. There's no technique or stupid button you press and you have to time it right or you die. Hunt is about position and tactic, and even if you don't know what you're doing, sometimes you get lucky. Sometimes you're hunkered down in a bush trying to avoid a meathead, and some dingus comes prancing along. They fight the meathead, they get hit a little. They're on low health and kill the meathead. And they also cleared the dog kennel, the crows, everything that you were worried about. And they're on low health. One good mosin pistol shot to the chest or head and they die. Cool! And it's late at night so the boss is right there and they were the only other player. Kill that bad boy, go get the second bounty, then extract. Boom. Just like that I won my first game of hunt as a solo. By accident while out farming grunt kills and hive kills for my lore entry. I wasn't above blood rank five, that guy was a better and experienced player who just got unlucky and thought he was in empty server and got caught in the open while wounded. That leads me to another thing, solo play. This video kind of makes it seem like "that's not the way you should play." And just like the video I'm going to tell you that sometimes solo is okay. Maybe it's not ideal, but it's hard, and it depends on your goal and what you want out of the match. I go in looking to kill the NPC's first and foremost. I'm trying to unlock stuff and get lore and guns. I -do- play in PvP, and I do engage compounds, but that's because I play with free hunters or legendary skins with minimal cheap gear. Low risk, high reward. If there's no players though and a compound is empty or they're off fighting over the bounty, then I clear the compound I'm in and try to cut off the bounty holder at the extraction point or something. But because I'm just there to farm for stuff with little intention to actually take the bounty (it's a bad idea as a solo, don't do it, just leave the bounty as bait until everyone else is dead) I'm not let down when I die and don't extract. If your head space is on total victory, yeah you're going to be disappointed. But if you have smaller goals to complete before death or extraction then it's not so bad to play solo. Just, don't expect to clear the board on every run. Trust me when I say, this game is a glorious experience in general. It has something here for everyone. There's a way to focus PvE, a way to just focus PvP, there's a really deep and complex lore behind the game and a cool way of unlocking it that forces you to play. And once you get over gear fear or some sort of innate attachment to your hunters (they're just skins, you'll see the same guy again in three re-shuffles, promise) there's nothing to lose and everything to gain. Every match is a new story, a new experience, and a new challenge. The environment is immersive and absolutely beautiful, and allows things to be eerie even in broad daylight. I've been nearly murdered by bungling idiot hunters with romero shotguns and shambling faceless horrors in the bright muggy bayou sun about as many times as I've been scuffling around an abandoned prison at night and been blind-sided by Armored or some psychopath with a bomb lance. I've never felt so sneaky in a game until I've had a trio of players walk right past me and get blown up by my dynamite bundle when they try to loot my team-mate, so bad-ass as leveling a duo with a chain-pistols last shots, or so invincible as taking a hailstorm of lead to the plate and smashing a combat ax into some cocky prestige player's melon. Luck is your friend in the Bayou- may it bless you more than your enemies. Thank you for the game recommendation Skill Up!

In PUBG there is nothing persistent, if I die I'll just literally jump into another game; In Tarkov, if I die I only lost what I was carrying, minus the safe box of course. Revisiting this video I want to mention a game I had the other day in Trios - it was a double bounty map on Lawson Delta, the first boss was already dead and being banished by the time my team and I located the second boss. Taking the boss down was easy since we went loud and blew it up with a sticky bomb and guns, but after that we knew we were exposed. We spent about 10 minutes fortifying the compound before we even started the banishing ritual, and then, we waited... Two other teams arrived almost in unison, but instead of fighting us (we were still holed up in the main building with all our traps) they start shooting at eachother. Beyond one or two pot-shots my teammates took at stray enemies, the two teams got into a massive gunfight which lasted around 4 minutes as they both battled for the right to take us on, with us just waiting inside and listening to the carnage unfold outside. Meanwhile, the fourth team finished banishing _their_ boss and, instead of going north to their closest extraction, decided to come south... to us. So we've got two teams having an outright war around us, a third team charging towards us on the map, highlighted on darksight and in possession of occult wallhacks, and we're still sitting pretty in our little bunker as the bullets fly. Eventually, one of the two teams fighting us emerges victorius, and things go quiet for a while. There's one or two probing attempts as they try to push in on us and we fend them off with our guns and traps before, finally, the last team shows up, and another gunfight erupts between them and the guys who were there already. The team with the other boss's bounty, who are still fresh and unscathed and also able to see through walls, easily dispatch the previous victors, and then they start trying to get at us. They foolishly try to push into our fortified arena, and finally it was our time to shine: With a combination of traps, good aim, and a bit of luck, we manage to take two out of three of the enemies down, only for me to go down to the third, followed by a tense moment where the final hunter backed off and forced my allies to push them. They put up a decent fight, almost downing another of my teammates before they, too, were finally taken out and I was brought back. Some of the most fun I've ever had in a game, to be honest, and I spent a lot of the time just hunkered in a corner with a shotgun listening to a massacre happen outside my desperately fortified compound. There's no other game that can quite capture the feeling Hunt does.

I played this for about a month straight and whilst I was frustrated at times, I also played for those moments. When you have a character that you've been tailoring for game after game and you suddenly find yourself on the receiving end of a sniper's bullet or a stray round, an explosive or getting caught out with a shotgun and that's it, work effectively wasted. But it wasn't ever enough to stop me playing, I felt that Dark Souls desire to throw myself in and hope for the best. The tension is impeccable. Those last moments of a banishing were dripping in tension, I would be sat with friends and we wouldn't be saying a word, three of us sat in total silence listening to the jangle of chains, the crunch of broken glass, estimating if that fired gun was marginally closer then it was the last time it went off and I absolutely adored it. Running through a bayou with a bounty, especially when you played on your own, hearing footsteps powering through the water behind you, trying to navigate zombies and water demons, quickly switching between map and first person to try and find the best means of escape. I started to wind off after I maxed out my level but I've been yearning to go back and I think I was worried about how good people would have gotten in the meantime. 😂 But, y'all owe it to yourselves to try this. I've honestly never, ever felt such delicious tension in a game then I have with this. Accept some games aren't going to go your way, but that's the point, and get drawn into it's world. 💪

It has the perfect mix of PvP and PvE. The PvE isn't harmless, it can and will kill you if you don't put any thought into dealing with that element of the game and it can put you at a disadvantage in regards to PvP but it's just perfect. Unlike Tarkov where if you see a Scav he could just one tap you or injure you to the point you may as well just die anyway.

It's nice of you to warn potential new players about these somewhat off putting aspects, but to me even when always dying as soon as I see someone else there is so much fun in this. I've never before been so immersed and I like the 90 quiet percent of just roaming the landscape as much as the intense sudden action filled 10 percent. THANK YOU!!! I haven’t really enjoyed a MP shooter in 15 years. It’s a genre that really hasn’t grown much at since the Quake 3 days. It bores me to tears. But not Hunt. No no no no. It’s a brilliant slice of “I’ve never played anything like this” to the umpteenth degree. I put about 300 hours into this on PC.... using a controller with no aim assurance versus every other player using M+KB. I almost only ever played solo. I died a million times. But, but BUT; every now and then my sneaky savage a$$ would have a run of straight swamp murder that sent my pulse racing through the roof. For 30-40 minutes at a time. White knuckle “I’m gonna have a stroke cocaine’s got nothing on this” raw survival instinct overload. Its the single most tense and exhilarating experience I’ve ever had in a video game. The atmosphere is unmatched by any other MP game I’ve ever played. Playing with a controller (I pretty much have to for reasons) put me at a huge disadvantage on PC but I stuck with it anyway. Its reputation for being “hardcore” is overstated. It’s just brutal and you gonna die. You gonna get mad. But eventually you’ll be the one ending another player’s match in spectacular fashion. Everyone who likes survival horror and shooters, even if you don’t like online ones like me, needs to give this a try. It’s very worth wrapping your head around it’s unusual (unprecedented, really) gameplay

Hoopla10 I don’t even like “hard” games anymore. I’ve never finished a Souls game even though I adore the art style and vibe. But Hunt got me. I don’t mind dying in it, over and over. Because it’s such a thrill getting there. And it makes those moments of success feel earned and 100 times more potent. The build up in Hunt is long and slow. But that makes the release when it lands incredible. Unmatched for me. Glad you and your mates are enjoying it! Feels like a strange privilege being among the relative few who stuck around to “get” it and experience it

As a player who's been playing since the game particularly hit Early access this is a pretty damn good review. The only point I'd disagree with is your point on people leaving the queue and community. If you're joining randoms using the matchmaking. Personally, if you are going to get this game, I'd recommend joining the games official discord and looking for partners that way. People in the discord are almost always happy and willing to play with newer players and to teach them the ropes and mechanics of the game. Bar that, this is a really comprehensive review and is a great overview of what u can expect in the game. I'd disagree. There's lots of folks always advocating the "Official Discord Server" of -insertgamehere-, but I've found that sometimes those folks can be just as toxic (arrogant, know-it-alls especially, rather than willing to teach you) as using in-game chat. At least the latter means I don't need an extra app (if I wasnt using it) and searching for those people.

I bought this game last saturday because of this video. I do not regret it one bit. I played it like crazy. This game is fucking insane. I'm a sucker for these kinds of games, I play Rainbow Six Siege, I played fucking DayZ for years when it was still a mod and I had a fucking pathetic computer that barely made the game run above 20fps and had no friends to play it with. And you know what? This put me right back in those old DayZ days, but it is fucking better. That teaming up with strangers, figuring out where shots come from, learning to use guns in a way you are definitely not accustomed to, getting lucky sessions where it seemed all the odds were in your favour, losing everything because of a mistake you made... yeah, it's all in here, and it's fucking awesome. I hope this game picks up because I am CERTAIN there is a public that would adore this. We've all had those games or ideas that you really wish other people would get into as much as you do, but actually there really wasn't a big enough target audience that would truly get into it. Not this case, I'm sure there's a lot of people like me that enjoy these experiences, there's a lot of other games that were able to attract these audiences, and I think this one truly deserves it.

As someone with about 250 hours into the game, I can definitely attest to the unwelcoming nature of randoms in the game. Generally it is a better idea to find people to queue up with in Hunt's official discord, which has a relatively friendly atmosphere and there is plenty of people there to give advice or play along with beginners. It has helped me find some like-minded people to do the stupid builds and meme runs I've done so far. That, and the memes are just absolutely gold in the Discord.
