Update: Please check out my newer video where I made an entertainment cabinet in this style - • Amazing Woodworking / ...
I had started collecting and cutting all the scrapwood almost a year ago, and finally had time to film and build this table. It turned out more beautiful than I could have imagined. I originally just set out to build a new cheap work table out of scraps, but now after making this table, I think I'd like to try this method with some fine furniture!

Yes, there was a lot of time spent on this project. Hours on the tablesaw, hours on the planer, hours on the drum sander. In the end, it's not hard, just time consuming.

I've always loved the look and feel of butcher block. When I installed wood flooring I intentionally made it as uneven as possible so the I sorta have a 'butcher block floor'. Amazing piece of work. IMHO it deserves more than just those metal pole legs. It's a work of art and should be in some dining room someplace. To make it out of just 'scraps' was just incredible. Nice work!

Hey Brian, I had the DeWalt planer, then sold it to my brother because he needed one, and I really wanted a spiral head cutter planer, so I then bought the cutech one. This table is used as my main work table, and I'm happy that it's staying in the shop. It's almost been like a magic trick in a sense because I'd say about 80% of it is made out of poplar, which I got for free, but since I threw in a couple pieces of purple heart and padauk, everyone thinks it is a bunch of expensive woods. Anyways, this table serves me very well to build other projects on everyday. And someday 40 years from now, it will show that it's lived a good life, and will still last well beyond that.

I'm planning on making a dining table like this as well. My suggestion is to do smaller sections. Like 6" wide. I feel like the 12" wide sections didn't allow me enough time to work with it before glue started setting up. Then you could also run a 6" wide section through a jointer first as well. Best of luck to you!

@@TGWoodworking whatever size planer you have, make it about and inch narrower than that. The trick is you don't have to make the full length at once - just leave a handful of staggered ends, let the first part of the run dry, then glue in your additional pieces to make the full length.

That's a beautiful table top and a great example of turning 'scrap' into a functional object. I don't want to be a killjoy, but I thought the legs let it down a bit, although if it's going to be an outfeed table, why not? That top is to die for, though.

Thanks for watching, and please note: Yes, I know the frame is not ideal. You don't have to tell me how much you hate it. It is temporary, and it was not built for looks, the top was. This tabletop is too big to fit in my home, therefore it is in the shop until I have a bigger area for it, and then I can build a wood frame for it. I also just needed a frame that could quickly be disassembled. Have a nice day!

"You had me at 'BUTCHER BLOCK table'!" Just gorgeous pal. And I'd planned to make one myself but I got stuck, stupidly, about just how to give it strength. Why it never once occurred to me to use them the "long way up" instead of laying them flat is so bloody simple and solves that problem. So, thanks. Great job. I do wish you'd spoken to us along the way, makes it easier to follow and much more entertaining. And it seems you went with using pipe for legs and I'll do that as well, but with a little different config. So too, thanks for that. Again, great job!

'Twas me pleasure! But you just replied with something I guess I don't understand about "true" Butcher block, that the end grain feeds UP. Why's that? (I don't know, never really gave it a thought.) Does it have anything to do with scratch prevention? Just an off-hand guess ...

Grumich the grain faces up so when you cut in it you do not cut across the grain but between the fibers. When you wet or oil the block the fiber swells and closes off the cuts again, hence why it is the preferred cutting block style from hygiene point of view.

This comment is hilarious. Because honestly there is some truth to that especially with somebody like my wife and Lord knows how much I love her that she sees something like this and she thinks it's done a whole lot quicker than what it is has no idea how much time and effort it takes to do something like this and make it look as good as he did. I mean this table is amazing in anybody that knows anything knows this takes some time but it's hilarious how yes my wife would expect it to be done in 10 minutes as well. Well I have news for her I can do one in 10 minutes but it sure as hell ain't going to look like that LOL

Just asking. Is it a problem to have a laminated top with no cross support underneath for structure?
@TGWoodworking
@TGWoodworking 6 жыл бұрын
I don't believe so. But we'll see. I haven't done this before, but thought I'd try, as an experiment. I could always add supports later if I notice any changes. I plan to make a dining table this way soon
@MrLibertyordeath

I thought the same. I would have put something under there for cross support. But what is the internet for, but to tell everyone else how they should have done it. lol
