I'm always re-evaluating things in my home that are taking more time than they are worth. I often talk about our stuff as employees. With an employee, you pay them to do a job, and in turn, that job should benefit your company in an equal or, ideally, greater rate than you’re paying them. Your stuff is like that. All our stuff requires our time and attention to manage, care for, and inventory them. If the time you’re taking to manage, care for, and inventory these things isn’t equal to the value you get from these products, it might be a sign that you don’t really need them.
Now, I think one of my biggest pet peeves is wasting time. And so I’m always looking at simple ways to make my life easier, more streamlined, to make certain processes faster or easier. So I'm rounding up the top ten things I STOPPED buying because they ultimately just took too much time.

I never understood the overly obsessive bed decoration with lots of throw pillows, extra decorative blankets etc. i just want sleep in there and not have to shove all those (dust collecting) throw pillows on the (dusty) floor and then go through all the rigmarole of making the bed with all theses extras in the morning! Just give me nice duvet covers and pillows for sleeping and I’m good! I do like to have some throw pillows on sofas etc. one way of reducing the the storage space of decorative pillows is to use the Ikea version: buy one set of pillow inserts and get only covers for different seasons! So much easier to store just the covers!

I think culturally it’s frowned upon to wear the same things over and over, but I thrive on it. I have several basic pieces I just mix and match regularly and I like that. It stresses me out to have to dedicate time and effort to getting ready, so it’s nice to have a closet of basics I can throw together and be able to dedicate my time and energy to things that actually matter. Thanks for validating, and glad to know there are more of us out there who feel this way!

I'm in New Zealand. One year I wore the same navy blue skirt and cardigan every day to work. I just changed the shirt a few times. (Kind of like how I guy can get away with wearing the same suit). I was awesome. Not sure if anyone noticed. I wish I'd bought about three more of that skirt and cardigan. They got completely worn out.

I can relate! I still have a lot of things hanging around that I don't need any more. I'm retired now, so I never wear the jewelry I wore to work or the clothes. I live in jogging pants and t-shirts. Would I like to be more stylish--yes, but know one ever sees me! I go to the grocery store maybe once a week and a yearly visit to Dr, dentist and eye Dr. , And church when I can get a ride. I don't go much or do much. In the summer I walk a lot, but in a 6 block radius. No real need to dress up or look stylish!! So all those things I spent all that money on to look good for work, are now irrelevant!!

I'm going to use this video to help me sorting out. I don't have small children any more but I do have too many ornaments and jewellery and clothes I hated or don't fit (until last Monday when I did a wardrobe purge). I'm going to have the odd ornament to make the place look nice not tonnes of them. We are selling our home so I'm getting rid of a lot of mine and boxing up a lot of the kids ornaments that they can't get rid of because their late Grandma bought them for them. They can then decide if they'd like to keep that in their space or in the loft when we move or if they can part with them.

I love this! I totally agree with excess stuff just adding to what we have to manage in our homes! I do feel like I get stressed then about adding anything to our home or buying new things, not knowing whether it will add value or just be a waste like other things I’ve recently decluttered. I would love if you could do a video about things you consider/think about before making a purchase to hopefully make sure it’s something that will add value, even if it’s not an absolute need!

Love this so much! I’ve been slowly getting rid of so many toys. I’ve noticed my kids would rather play with buckets of water, draw in a notebook, build with cardboard boxes. They find stuff I already have at home and enjoy those things way more than their toys. Makes my life much easier and clutter free!

Exactly! About a year ago, I purged about 60% of my kid's toys, and honestly, it was the best thing we ever did! They can find and use what they actually like snd my home is so much calmer and my kids are so creative. We make all kinds of things from cardboard.... doll houses, alien planets, space ships, pirate ships, air planes... so, so much.

I had to laugh at “no throw pillows “ 😂. Obviously you are tall, but I’m under 5ft. I only have a few throw pillows in my house for back support. It helps me sit closer to the front of the seat so my feet have a better chance of touching the floor 😉. Now to re-evaluate my 100 scatter rugs 🤣

Totally agree with throw rugs, especially rugs with fringes!. I have never understood why anyone would put a rug underneath a dining table. I have a great quality runner in our hallway with a foam pay under it. The rug does not move, is easy to vacuum and keeps the hallway quite where all the bedrooms are(we have hardwood).

I realised a few years ago that my shoe collection was getting really out of hand. I did a big cull and since then I usually buy, if I need it, flesh-coloured or nude shoes for spring/summer styles (and trainers/sneakers) as they literally go with everything, and neutrals for autumn/winter shoes and boots. That way I only need, for example, one pair of flat nude sandals, one pair of heeled nude sandals, one pair of nude trainers, and so on. It does mean I have to search a bit more for the right pair when I need them but it has really narrowed down the shoe cupboard! I do still have a couple of colours in my winter shoes (dark navy and black usually which are neutrals) as I wear blue jeans a lot and black trousers, but since I live in a city with no real snow and not a lot of rain in winter, my winter shoe cupboard is minimal.

This video has made me feel so seen! I completely agree with every single point you've made. I'm at the same point in my life where I'm pregnant with a toddler, with no help from family, nor can afford to buy and I'm just trying to scale down on everything I can that'll make my life easier. I feel like many if not all of my friends are not at the same point in their life so they might look a bit weird at me for talking about this stuff, and recently I've been feeling like maybe I'm wrong. I really like this video! One thing I really hate is running out of anything that I use on a regular basis. I don't (usually) buy random stuff, but I have two of everything I use, like laundry detergent, deodorant, etc. When the one I'm using runs out, I start the second one and put it on my list and replace the second one when I go to the store. I absolutely despise!!!!! going to the store when I wasn't planning on going because I ran out of what I need. If I need to, I will mark the lid of the container I'm using, so I won't use both of them at the same time without realising it. The only thing worse than running out of one thing is running out of two at the same time!

I don’t call myself a minimalist but I own 5 pairs of shoes, 2 summer, 1 winter and my gym shoes. I wear 4 dresses on repeat in summer 😊 I’ve culled my accessories to 2 pairs of earrings and spend almost no time getting ready in the morning. I use our local library which also has an app for digital and audiobooks which we use all the time. I am definitely a bookworm & love books. However, I am also extremely particular about what books I buy & add to my collection. It needs to be something I will re-read multiple times so I actually don't have that many. What I do is make heavy use of my public library & inter-library loan. It's great since I get access to tons of books & I don't have to worry about storage or maintenance. If I find myself checking a particular one out a lot, or always wishing I had it on hand to read, it goes on my to-buy wishlist. Otherwise, I can read it once, return it to the library & be done with it.

I love books and even after I got my Kindle (2008) I still had 7-5 shelf bookcases full. It took me a lot of time to let go, but now I'm down to two shelves and that's for my favorite author. Even so, I find I have to clear out my Kindle every once in a while. I just mainly keep the favorites that I know I will reread and those books that I still have to read. I listen to audio books when I walk my dog. Really should do a clear out of those libraries too.

Thanks Kallie! 😁 I agree with a lot of these things. I did see a video in the last year or 2 of Wayne Goss and how he buys his skin care. I've started doing this too. At the end of every year, buy the skin care you'll need for the year! That way you're not buying something to try and have more excess. If it works for you, get it in advance. I've incorporated hair care into that too and for the kitchen, buying extra pasta for those times when you 'don't have anything to eat' Thanks again Kallie for your tips! Can't wait to see baby #3 🍼

What I'm trying to learn from Kallie is to create habits where I'm tidying/cleaning as I go, rather than letting it pile up and then feeling overwhelmed by the amount of work (and also, I can't tackle that amount of work at once, so I can only handle a few tasks before my back needs a rest).

My partner and I really struggle with it and I feel like we are always finding something in the back of the dang fridge to throw out. I am streamlining my makeup. I don't even wear makeup every single day anymore but I don't need anymore of anything! I was pretty proud of myself the last time I was in Target because I bought ONE Lipgloss. Sure I have lipgloss but I was almost out of my favorite when I bought it. I'm making myself wear the heck out of this lipgloss to justify the purchase to myself. Haha now I'm pregnant for the first time and I'm sure I'm going to have to come up with a system that works for toys! And just all the baby stuff. I definitely need to go through the books. I did this with my lotions and makeup early in the pandemic. I mean, I don't even like lotion, so why was I hoarding so many bottles/tubes?! And as for makeup, I'm actually allergic/sensitive to most eye shadows, so I tossed all my palettes (I didn't have many, but they were still taking up space) and individual shadows, eyeliners, etc. that I just never used. Now I have only the basics. I need to go through my bathroom cabinet, though, because I know there are nail polishes and other bathroom items that I never use that I could also get rid of.

I agree about beauty products! I would tend to get caught up in the search for the next “miracle product.” But, they never really were. I pared down my routine to the essentials that I know work for my skin and have stopped experimenting- it is so much easier this way!

Sometimes the simplest beauty and skin care items work the best! For example I use a combo of a spoon of olive oil, sugar and coco butter to make a great body scrub. Costs little and works great! Good quality makeup and skin care doesn't necessarily mean "expensive"!

I’m not a big throw rug type of person but I do have two anti-fatigue mats in my kitchen- one in front of the sink and one in front of the cooktop. Our floors are ceramic tiles and just too hard on my back and hips for standing on for extended periods cooking or doing dishes. I also keep a well stocked pantry and fridge/freezer. I don’t want to be caught without enough food in case of an extended illness or bad weather. In January here in Texas we had an ice storm, everything was closed for 3 days due to a half inch of ice on everything, some areas lost power. I was glad I had enough food and didn’t need to leave the house or go hungry. But maybe it’s just my age and how my family did things growing up 🤷🏻‍♀️ I am guilty of having excess books, but I love books so I’m fine with that 😂

Couldn’t agree with you more on books. My family is full of voracious readers, and while we do make use of the library often, I grew up surrounded by books and full (organized) bookshelves and it benefitted me immeasurably in so many different ways. My husband and I call ourselves minimalists with everything BUT books! In my opinion, a house without a full bookshelf just looks sad.

It's not hoarding if it's books. I love my home library shelves, gives me pleasure just to look at them. I had a great library when I lived in NY and could get any book I wanted. Now live in rural Florida and my libraries are lacking. I buy used bookd from Thrift Books or Better World Books that are cheap and excellent condition. I donate my excess to the library.

I have found that my kids play with the empty containers of their bath products instead of toys. Its also much easier to keep mould free than bath toys and they can play with the water. We do not have alot of toys but my son will also play with the same ones over and over and not at all with the rest. I never really bought alot, most was gifts or second hand but its worked out well because now I can see what is engaging for him and what not, and only focus on that. I also agree with your list, especially beauty products. In South Africa they are really expensive so I also just have one of each. Thank you so much for all your hard work, I really love your videos and they have helped me alot with my own home.

Regarding books - my husband and I have been making an effort to take the books we don't want to keep to Little Free Libraries in our area, or just being really open to loaning them to family and friends without an obligation to return them. We still have a lot on our shelves, especially series and kids' books, but we've gotten better about not having multiples of the same book, or keeping books neither of us really loved.

I caved in to Hello Fresh because of you and holy ish!!! I hated meal planing and cooking before and it became like a cooking class with out the wasted time and overwhelm feeling of looking at recipes. ON TOP of that, it is SO true that we spent and wasted more when we stopped the subscription. We were mind blown. So we got back on it ❤ we skip a week every now and then if we want something special we thought of or we leave town. It’s amazing. I don’t dread cooking now and that is a huge part of being a SHAM! I can now do more with my son, skipping the grocery more often than before, I can do projects around the house. It’s been amazing 😊

I'm not a fan of Hello Fresh (just wasn't impressed with the vegetarian choices in my city), but there is a fantastic salad delivery service here that has branched out into a few sheet pan meals/sides and breakfast items. Their salads are amazing, and all ingredients are packaged in a separate sections so you only use the stuff you like. I rarely leave anything out, but now and then I'll skip things like onions, and of course any non-vegetarian that comes with the salad (usually bacon). As soon as the weather gets warmer, I'll be signing up for them again. They're so wonderful in the warmer months and I'm with you - I absolutely hate cooking! I figure if I spend less on groceries, it's worth it. I always have so much food waste!

How in the world are you spending less using Hello Fresh? Have you ever broken down the price and compared it to the grocery store? HF is exponentially more expensive.

Wow, this is me almost to a 'T'. Some rugs but not in the kitchen or dining room. Kids cleanup toys from the time they are able to. Not much decor because they take up precious time cleaning and moving around in order to clean. Stopped with the extra food when our economy tanked and prices sky rocketed and even less when I changed my way of eating to Carnivore. Throw pillows, only a couple where I buy cover ups to match the season. They fold as nice as a pillow case. I am not a big book reader anymore. I read what I need online. Never was a huge makeup and 'skin care' person. I never got why people wanted to put all of those chemicals on to seep through their skin. I'm pretty good with not having too many clothes that I don't need or use. Never was a huge accessorizer but did have a problem with shoes, namely sneakers. this all makes me seem plain and uninteresting but that couldn't be far from the truth and you would never know that this is the way I live my life. What I am saying is that you don't have keep up with the Jones's to be beautiful and fulfilled in life.

Have you considered renting a special occasion dress? I had a friend who used to go to "events" for her job and that is what she did. I have bought evening dresses used and resold them at a consignment store for what I paid, once even for more.

My youngest is 7, so I don't feel like I'm quite in the same season of life as you, but I agree with all you said. We have 4 kids and so much clutter. We're working on it. 2 of my children are on the autism spectrum and another has extreme ADHD. I work 2 part-time jobs from home and my husband works full time outside the home. I'm exhausted from everything and I really like your philosophy about things taking up too much time. It's very true.

It's crazy to me that people buy extra or excess food. I only buy essential food primary because that's what I can afford. If I get an extra pay (it's a month with an extra week) then I'll buy Ingredients to bake things and dessert and stuff.

I got rid of the throw pillows on my bed and it shaves off a good few seconds ot make my bed and looks so much better. Then, for the couch I only have 2 because we use them to lean on and if I have more than two they end up on the floor. I also have different covers for different seasons.

Love this video. Little tip for kids toys- most kids are more interested in a toy on a shelf if it’s not completed. So the puzzle and carrot toy in the video may seem more inviting if we take the pieces out and put them in a box or basket next to the board.

I watched another video earlier tonight that had you in another person’s video. You had on those pink ear phones and you were talking about the Best Buy’s at Amazon for under $20. You were glowing. Pregnancy really suits you. I’ve heard of pregnant women having a glow about the but I had never seen it. Good luck with handling three babies. I know you will do well because you always stay on top of things. Thank you for sharing your life with us. ❤ Congratulations 🎊🎉🎈🥳🍼👍

I down loaded my books from the library onto my iPad phone or tablet never any overdue books because if you forget to reduce they take them back or someone else as requested and I take them back back again and if you can’t find what you want in e books You can still go get the box in hardcover or paperback. You just have to be able to go pick him up.
