The hinge shown is called / classed as a butt hinge this is because the hinge butts up to the edge of the door generally these type of hinges are found on the older / early upvc door systems and had little or no adjustment for moving the door left and right or up and down and was solely reliable on the installer fitting and setting the door up plumb and square The later hinges were called flag hinges because they looked like a flag shape. these hinges became popular because they overlapped the door and offered up to 5mm adjustment left to right and up and down

Thanks - it was helpful to know how they're fitted. Two of the four hinge pins on my door were sticking out at the top, and this enabled me to reposition them quickly. (I'm not sure why they moved - hopefully they'll stay put for a while now!)

Ive had some serious battles trying to get the pin out of old doors, often rusted in and need to cut them off with an angle grinder !

From memory that particular hinge is a 3mm Allen key however dependent on make of hinge we have seen them from 2.5mm to 5mm grub screws heads. Hope this helps

just follow the tips in the tutorial and you should have no issues

Really useful video. Just take out pin out as the door wasn’t lining up with the locking points and could see the bottom door hinge not aligned was the likely cause. Tried putting the bolt back in but still seems a few mm off balance. Can nee bolts fix this problem or is it best just to buy a new hinge fitting?

My bolt/pin was never installed properly, I have managed to pull it out with my fingers. Is there a correct method to put it back in properly?

what is butt-hinge compared to regaulr hinge?

My grub screw has become trapped in the hinge. :(. So I’ve been attempting to drill the hole (with the trapped grub screw in it) in the hope that I remove the metal grub screw that way, and can then release the pin. But this is proving to be not working. There seemed to be plenty metal coming out, but the pin is simply not budging. Anyone any ideas. So frustrating, I need to get this door off the frame. :(

It could be that the hinge/s are worn and need replacing however it could be that the door needs toeing and heeling The correct way to address this issue is to Toe and Heel the opening sash and this means re-pack the glass around the glazing in the sash to lift it up. It is not difficult for a competent, DIY person but needs to be done in a correct manner and is too difficult to explain in writing, & therefore we have done a how to do video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mZ6bnNNezLbZiKs.html

you can't adjust the height with these old hinges you would need to toe and heel the door which means removing the glazing beads and re-packing the door
