The Butterbox Babies refers to a dark chapter in Canadian history involving the Ideal Maternity Home in East Chester, Nova Scotia. Run by William and Lila Young in the 1920s to 1940s, it presented itself as a sanctuary for unwed mothers. However, behind closed doors, the Youngs operated a black-market adoption scheme, selling babies born at the home to willing adoptive parents. These infants often suffered neglect and mistreatment, with some being buried in small wooden butter boxes on the property. The truth about this exploitation and abuse came to light in the 1980s, leading to public outrage and efforts to memorialize the infants, making it a haunting reminder of past injustices. In 1935, antibiotics weren't available. Production of antibiotics didn't begin until 1939.

You’re right! I didn’t even notice that my source was wrong - because I was back & forth between the 20’s, 30’s and the 40’s with this story. Antibiotics were discovered in the late 20’s but then not widely prescribed until about 1942. Good catch! Every source I found said Eva died was there in 1935 & the Young’s were on the stand for her death in 1936 & it was determined that she died from an infection, so I’m guessing that maybe the BF being upset she wasn’t given antibiotics was something that one of the writers “adlibed” and added it, I didn’t catch that one!

Side note- it's a tragedy how till today US hospitals are like that, charging for every single little bit and Bob during labor and delivery. I'm privileged enough to have tricare but I gave birth at a university hospital and I saw the "bill" an average mother would pay, assuming there were no complications. They itemize even the most mundane things, even the swabs and Vaseline, they're gonna make sure every single piece of "care" they give will be wrung out of you doubly... especially in an era where wages don't match the cost of living its abhorrent.

Yeah if you look at those “itemized” bills it’s Wild! 🫣 Highway robbery! When I had my children, the nurses emptied out the little cabinet thing in the room, that had extra “care” items in them & said “take it! They are gonna charge it to you, on your bill regardless!”

#1 -- Go to Canada on vacation and come home with a baby. Nope, not suspicious at all. #2 -- The term "Baby Farmers" has nothing to do with the FFA. (Okay, that's what passes for humor when you've been breathing welding fumes for several hours. We'll move on.) Also...not to sound narrow-minded, but that maternity house looks a lot like one of those 19th century lunatic asylums...

Isn't it amazing that these agencies started by religious people that such horrible things? Most of the schools for Native Americans were run by Catholics and other religious groups including the Quakers (which surprised me). Look how horribly those children were treated and a lot never survived being in the schools. these illegal adoption places should never have been. How can religious people do such things to others???

It’s really so sad, I’ve thought of this on many occasions, because someone who claims to love God, should be treating people the best! All I can think is that people with evil intentions take advantage of the respect others have for religious institutions & then use that power to abuse others. It really is so sickening😔 Especially when those in charge of those religions - and are supposed to be holding people accountable, are not holding them accountable OR are even joining in with the horrible actions. And I find that it always seems to all come back to MONEY! (And sometimes power, but usually the money gives them the power)
