I filmed slow motion flight and time-lapse eclosion sequences of tropical butterflies, and give a behind-the-scenes tour of our museum's walk-in tropical rainforest exhibit.
Check out naturalsciences.org/ for info about when to visit our museum and the butterflies. [Right now (Dec, 2021) the exhibit is closed due to pandemic-related safety measures. But we're all hoping we can lift restrictions and get it open to all again soon!]

Fun fact: in Brazil (and a few other neighboring countries), the owl butterfly is also known as the "witch butterfly". Common folklore tells that they are witches in disguise, watching over people with the big eyes on their wings. I find it a really spooky and cool concept :)

It’s fascinating how you can see the oversized abdomens of the new adult butterflies shrink over time as all the fluid gets pumped into the wings. It’s especially apparent with the monarch butterfly’s hatching.

It’s hard to believe something like the owl butterfly can exist. The eyes look like they’re made by an artist, they’ve got subtle shine on them and everything, but it’s just nature’s work and that’s it, crazy.
@AR15andGOD
@AR15andGOD 9 ай бұрын
What? "But it's just natures work and that's it." Proof? That's called circular reasoning, where you assume the premise in the premise itself. You have no proof this is simply nature, all you do is say it. You even say yourself it looks like it was intentionally designed. But nope, it's just nature. Any evidence that it's just nature? I mean evidence, not just repeating yourself..

Never mind how impressive it is that only one butterfly of the mating pair lifts their combined weight, I'M ESPECIALLY IMPRESSED that no body parts are snapped off during the process!! Almost brought tears to my eyes!!!!
@jo-han
@jo-han 2 жыл бұрын
Would you snap body parts of if you lifted your brother/sister? I guess evolution will guarantee this, since otherwise the species has a lot less chance of survival if body parts come of that easily :)

@@jo-han - you or I may well "snap body parts off" if you were attached only by your genitals!! That was the WHOLE point of that comment!!! (R/Whoosh anyone??)

@@markchip1 :) Lol, well in that case you have not yet googled men being suspended by their genitals. I do not recommend googling it though :). FYI being suspended by your head, 1 hand, 1 foot, just your head, breasts, suction cups or a big fishhook through the skin of your back also works..... Yet again, I do not recommend googling all of these.... :)

I recommend The Butterfly Palace in Branson, Missouri. There is an entrance fee, but it is well worth it. They keep and breed hundreds of different butterflies in a huge indoor forest. When I was there, I just happened to be wearing red, which is the color of their feeding-flowers. I had butterflies all over me. It was the coolest thing.

I was at a conservatory like this one taking pictures of butterflies when two mating Blue Morpho’s landed on my hand. I tried gently moving them to a leaf on one of the trees and then to some flowers but they decided to stay for a while. So I calmly sat down and waited for them to leave on their own. Eventually the male took flight while holding on to the female and off they went. It was an amazing experience.
