I will help you feel comfortable, confident, free, and knowledgeable about Mexico’s language and culture. Learn these Mexico travel tips to understand Mexico’s language, culture, people, Mexican tricks and ways, and much more. This video will prepare you mentally to navigate Mexico, so you will not find yourself in trouble. For example, you will carry toilet paper and soap, you will decide whether to dump your used toilet paper in the trash or in the bowl, you will bring change with you, you will not take your eyes off the gasoline machine, PEMEX, when you are getting gasoline for your rental. You will do everything online to rent a car, you will know the levels of spicy, according to Mexicans and according to international standards, you will know what to do when taking a cab, you will know that some foods are very regional and that we do not all eat mole or seafood tacos, you will take care of your teenagers because Mexican servers will not. You will learn a lot of information that it is not in the book, and that people will hesitate to tell you. Let’s do it. Vamos, vamos todos, vamos todos a aprender español con Ana at Butterfly Spanish.

This is a really good video Anna. There are a couple things I'd like to add though. ** The drinking age in Mexico is 18, so if you have kids that age or close to it, they can buy alcohol. And as Ana said, in many places, especially tourist areas, they aren't going to be monitoring your kids for you. ** The toilet paper thing. The reason you don't put paper in the toilet is because some of the plumbing is super old and the pipes are too thin to accommodate the paper. In more modern cities, buildings, hotels, restaurants, etc. this isn't really an issue. ** Change and taxi drivers. Taxi drivers never have change, even if they do, lol. Always have change when dealing with them. In general try to have small bills, it's best to ask the currency exchanges or banks for smaller bills or where ever you get your pesos from. Restaurants and small shop owners will often make a quick run to a nearby business where they can get change for you, but clearly it's better for everyone if you have small bills. ** Taxis. Finding a taxi is easy, they're everywhere. You don't need to go to a taxi stand, you normally flag them down in the street. Just make sure you learn what the official taxi's look like and only take those. As a tourist there will be many cab drivers who will take advantage of you. In fact, they'll take advantage of anyone who doesn't know better, local or tourist (from any country). Ask the people in your hotel or in restaurants what you should expect to pay to go to a particular destination so you'll have a reference point when you ask the driver how much. Also, most cab drivers that I have seen don't use meters, which is why you need to ask the cost before getting in a cab. And be prepared for the famous "night rate". For some reason some taxi drivers charge you more at night. A rip-off, but sometimes you don't have a choice. ** Food. Ana is exactly right. Most of what we know as "Mexican" food here in the US is far from Mexican. I've never, ever seen a Chimichanga on menu in Mexico. And once you've had real Mexican food you won't like this crappy "Mexican" food in the US. To ask if a particular dish is spicy you can just ask "Pica?" or "Pica mucho?". The response is of course relative. If you're in a very touristy area then they may know what foreigners consider spicy. ** Pedestrians. Ana is NOT joking. Pay attention when you cross the street in Mexico. Unlike here in the US, drivers don't appear to be conditioned to be as concerned about pedestrians as we are. No one is going to run you over intentionally, but you better be paying attention. Have fun in Mexico guys, I always do!

Spot-on advice! "Change" is indeed a big challenge in Mexico. You need to hoard your pocket change. Keep your bills in one pocket, and your change in the other pocket, so that the vendors don't know you have change. When I'm in Mexico, I always try to pay with a bill, so that I then receive change, which I then hoard. And whenever I see a bank, I go inside and get break a 500-peso note. In Mexico, you have to do a LOT of planning to make sure you aren't stuck with a pocketful of big bills and nothing else. It's not like the USA where you can pay for a pack of gum with a $20 bill and the cashier thinks nothing of it.

Also related to water: It's good to use a straw when drinking from a can or a beer bottle that you bought on the street since they can be carried on the back of open trucks or stored in not so good conditions. So the outside of the can might be dirty.

Learn Spanish with Ana. Another brilliant video. Regarding Mexican food variety, in one of your previous videos Learn basic Spanish Vocabulary: Vegetables in Spanish, you mentioned about making guacamole [el limón + el cilantro + el aguacate]. I was surprised that my daughter (we are living in Australia), knows how to prepare this. I asked her to prepare it. She prepared it very well. BTW, I’ve been waiting for this current video for quite some time. Thank you Ana for sharing heart to heart. This is Mexican at its best!

Car rental story: In Cancun last year, I returned a car to Hertz and they said the car wasn't theirs. Apparently, I was given the wrong car. Sloppy or on purpose? I don't know. But I take pictures of the car and person that gave it to me. It's a good idea to take pictures in case they (in any country) find dents or scratches that weren't written down when you took the car. In this example, I happened to get a picture of the agent so it was easy to demonstrate who gave it to me, and that was that. (The car was also missing the front licence plate, but my pictures showed no plate when I picked up the car, so all was well.)

I was pulled over twice for no front license plate. He said $20. I told him to write me a ticket bc I didn't have any cash on me. He told me to go.

Yep, I do that no matter where I rent the car! Also, at some ISLAND resorts, they require that you do NOT lock your rental car doors so that if thieves want to steal something out of the car, they don't have to break the windows and damage the car - which you will be responsible for because you didn't do as they said. In other words, we were told to leave our car doors unlocked when we exited and do not leave anything of value in them. Their reasoning is that the place is an island - where are they going to take a stolen car? LOL......
