This piece was covered in mold and mildew. Lots of soft, punky areas. I got something out of it, but, was it worth the time? You decide.
Finished in shellac.

Thanks for tuning in today, folks! Love ya for that! I'm not likely to have a turning video next week. I'm about to start on changing from old computer to new and I have a ton of files to move. I'm sure it's going to take days and days! I'm also quite nervous about it so, wish me well, please! LOL! Phil

Today I'm watching you in bed on a Friday evening instead of from my bed on Friday morning so I'm a bit discombobulated! That sounded like a windy day at Shady Acres when you recorded that Phil. As always you made something good come out of that ol' bit of wood. I'm going to save the e-bike videos for when you're wrangling your computer. Good luck, hope it goes well, see you on the other side of the terabytes! 👍

🙋‍♂️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Hi Phil another trip into your workshop and a story you have told. Different wood from what you expected and several obstacles in your way, but never the less you did it. It's not all about the finished piece but when they are on display you can tell all the different woods and the problems you had to overcome to finish the pieces. I hope you get your new PC working soon my week won't be the same without my visit to your workshop. Take care Phil.

Oh Phil, it may be older or damaged wood, but the subtle grain coloration I find quite appealing. Additionally, it challenged you a bit too, and if you are even a little like me, you still enjoy conquering a challenge. You gave it a chance to be something other than moldy wood. It is a unique and usable piece.

You have been an inspiration to me. I try to find the ugliest bizarre piece of wood to turn and bring out its beauty. Wish me luck. I'm submitting 5 weird wood bowls to a jury to be evaluated to see if I'm skilled enough to display in their facility. You helped me understand how to take chances as such by using wood usually relegated to firewood.

Phil, it's ALWAYS a JOY to spend time with you. Although we're not physically with you we are with you in spirit. The piece of Butternut you had was NOT good to look at BUT, in typical Phil, 'never say never' you decided to give it your best shot AND YOU WON. This bowl is brilliant when one considers what you started with & it certainly would make a great 'key bowl' & I am sure many other uses could be found for it. I too would get nervous having to change anything to do with computer files so I feel for you. Good luck with it my friend. Cheers, Don from South Aust.

It’s a beautiful bowl, Phil! We all have a little “rot” and undulation in us! And butterbut! It’s very hard to come by here knowing NH. Seven years ago I volunteered to build an ADA ramp for an elderly couple who couldn’t afford to have it professionally built. I was admiring his beautiful butternut trees. The husband scoured his yard to give me a handful of butternuts to plant. That was a “payment” money can’t make. Now I think of this every time I see butternut.

I don’t know whether this is sad or not take it as you are, yellow bellied sap sucker, I thought I remember seeing this before, but it was around two years ago and I actually just found it, And the same piece of wood came from the same person, Valerie, And I think, if you look in the bottom of the bowl when you hold it in a particular way, you can see your purple birds flying especially you can see the heads and beak, I have a very vivid imagination , I still think it is a piece of art and it turned out, alright, I’ve actually just watched this just gone 2 o’clock in the morning, I started laying my waterproof OBS flooring yesterday but after lying about eight or nine boards, I twisted my back, I think the word not as young as I used to be, And swinging a piece of 8’ x 2’ flooring grade boarding around it taking its toll on my back, I laid on my settee last night and I fell asleep there. 😂, and yes, I did watch loads of refuse on E-bike, I did think about getting one, the problem is I think my mountains hills will kill the bike within 15” min, So I purchased a HOG instead, I have still got to pick up, it is another reason why I’m trying to get my workshop garage sorted out, I’m even thinking of building a elevator lift in my 4 story Mill , nice one Phil, great piece of art at least it didn’t go on the fire, And yes, I know what it smells like. I’ve had some wood laying around with a lot of mould on it very similar last year., not very good for the lungs,

That piece of wood was quite challenging. You did an admirable job with what it provided and the bark does have some interesting features. I agree, the bottom looks quite nice; I think it would look very cool with a clock movement in it -- the size of the recess is about the right diameter for something like that. Best of luck with the computer upgrade. I remember when getting a new computer was an exciting event because of all the new features and capabilities that came with the upgrade; it has now become more traumatic than exciting. I will say that upgrading has become less traumatic after migrating to the Apple environment -- the last several upgrades have been really very transparent and painless.

Good luck with your new computer, I don't like the process of moving everything over from one to another either but once it's done you'll be happy. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw

Brave effort, Phil, but your skill and dedication was insufficiently rewarded this time. I've had my own share of overly-punky wood, lately, and it can be very frustrating. Onwards and upwards, brother.

A silk purse out of a pig's ear. Maybe not, but it demonstrates you can make something from nothing! As for the computer storage, you may want to consider an external hard drive that you just plug into your new computer's port. Then when you get your new computer you will have everything all safe and secure. Good luck, my friend, and thanks for the great videos!

I use a lot of punky wood making my keepsake boxes. What I do is use a watered down poly and apply it to the wood before I get into it. It absorbs the poly and makes it stronger to work with. Maybe apply the sanding sealer to the punky parts and see what happens with the cutting.

Phil, sometimes it is about the challenge, not so much the results. I will say, you did much more with it than most folks would have. On a different note, I want to thank you for doing the video about the sound you had with your lathe and what you did to correct it. I also have a 1840 Jet and yes mine started making the same noise as yours. I did as you did and that corrected the issue. I had to tighten my handle a bit mor than you did, but that fixed it. Thanks a lot for sharing that with us, as it made my issue, thanks to you, a simple fix. The E-bike reviews were interesting, as I ride a regular bike daily.

Well, that old log deserved a chance and you brought out some nice features in it. The grain on the bottom really is pretty. I have to tell you that I've got a picture in my mind of you "slobbering" that sanding sealer on the piece. There really aren't many better words for it. Perhaps slather. Daub or smear really don't convey the idea very well. Because I have a dog who is a champion slobberer, I think your depiction of putting that sanding sealer on gets the message across the best! 🐶 Thanks for taking us through the turning of that difficult piece of butternut. 😊

I like it, Phil. Both sides look good. It shows that you can always do a good job with a chunk of wood that is less than ideal. If you look closely at the crotch grain, you can see the feather in it. I just cut a large crotch piece of Honey Locust and then cut it down the middle. I have 2 lovely pieces that each have a feather in the grain.

I was excited to see the crotch figure in this piece! While it’s a beautiful turn, Phil, it is a little disappointing with regard to wood grain character. Eight weeks ago I turned a cracked and pithy piece of hard dense wood I still cannot identify. I’d glued and epoxied cracks. Taped the outside tightly when I hollowed it. After taking the tape off, it needed to be refinished because of the sticky residue it left. I went back over and sanded to 800, used sanding sealer, and then micro shine. I even took out a wool bonnet to buff the micro paste. I noticed the lid fitting needed just a tad better clean-up so I reached past my mask to grab a negative rake… POW! The bowl blew in three pieces. Thirteen stitches in my cheek later, a concussion, nerve damage, and a seven inch scar later I can talk about this stupid mistake. The laceration went clear through and wood chips came out when the cut was irrigated. Tomorrow is the first time I’ll use the lathe again after this accident. I got an airflow mask now. Every time I hear you say, “Mask and face shield on” I reflect on your reminder. That one, last, itty-bitty micro clean up on a lid setting almost cost me my life had that bowl hit my forehead of eyes. Thank you for your talents and reminders each week Phil!

Oh, my goodness, Danella! Oh my gosh, this is just awful! And, painful! I'm so grateful it didn't do more damage but, it sounds like it did enough. Good advice, Matt, thanks! 😊 I do have a backup drive. It's just that it is huge and takes forever to move everything. Also, lots of my old programs won't work with the new operating system so I have to buy and download, then learn, new software. Not fun! LOL!

@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop 😂😂😂 Well, what I'm suggesting is just use the old hard drive as an external drive...you really don't HAVE to move files...just access them when you need them... There used to be a lot of this wood in Oregon, but those birds think it's quite tasty. In Minnesota, Carpenter ants like to make nests in the trunk. It's just too sweet to ignore it. This is bad, because it's my favorite carving wood. All the beauty of walnut, but it's soft and still holds good detail.
