We found a kitchen counter/cabinet someone was giving away free, brought it home, sanded it, painted it with leftover paint, sealed it with varathane , added a Plywood bottom with casters & voilá... we have a rolling, outdoor BBQ prep station for minimal $$; it's amazing! We also took some nightstands, coffee tables, & other indoor furniture free from that same haul, painted with exterior weatherproof paint, & made those our patio furniture. They look amazing too, & all we used was sandpaper & leftover paint.... It's amazing what you can repurpose, if you think outside the box!

I guess I'm a person who loves the simple beauty of stained wood. Painted pieces are just not for me, but others may really appreciate them.

My new husband's house is full of 80's oak furniture. It's beautiful wood but now too dark and out of style. Piece by piece I plan to paint them ivory or pale grey. Even the kitchen is all dark wood cabinets and table. Oh so much work ahead!

With the cost of wood today I can’t see these projects being cost effective. I’d rather start off with a used piece and go from there.

I agree. Re-furbishing an old or damaged piece of furniture is the way to go.

I get my wood from the country road side, after construction crews have left it there for free picking.

The Graphic Fairy has lovely old illustrations you can download and scale to any size. I traced one French black and white candy store ad and went over the lines with an oil chased Sharpie on a thrift ed dresser. It is gorgeous!
