Cadmium was used in older cellphone batteries but I haven't seen one in about 12 years... Except in 12yo cellphone. Yes, NiCds still have some popular applications but not in many "disposable" electronics (LiIon and NiMh is often more portable/dense).

jrgcool35, of course we don't just do videos, but did also a lot of research about the e-waste problem. If you don't trust the information in the video just read other sources as well. Our toxics campaigner just told me the reports of the Basel Action Network (BAN) are good sources on e-waste recycling and dumping of e-waste in Asia and Africa. You'll find them on the BAN website (I can't link here but just google for Basel Action Network).

I never understood why we let corporates sell us such worthless stuff that never lasts long than 5 years so we can buy another one. My Mom gave me her Turning table with huge speakers about 20 years ago... she bought it in the sixties, still works a wonder. My roomie bought a pretty good stereo 3 years ago paid about 600$ CAN for it and it is fuzzing like crazy, we put my old can back instead.

Repairability would be nice. It so often is cheaper to replace than do even simple repairs. Cheaper to replace Remote than fix, even cheaper to replace whole DVD player than get new remote.

This was made in 2008 guys. '08. It's now, oh, 2014! And don't you see loads of electronics being recycled and becoming more environmentally friendly?! So stop getting worried, everything's fine. Things have changed.
@dharker75958 жыл бұрын
+Diaz Marche you couldnt be more wrong
@DD-cj6px8 жыл бұрын
Dom Harker how am I wrong? Electronics are being recycled and are more eco-friendly. A lot of things have improved over the past 7 years. At least explain your reason to say why I'm wrong.
@dharker75958 жыл бұрын
Diaz Marche I would suggest reading the UN report: "The Global E-Waste Monitor 2014" its one of the best up to date resources on the issue with ewaste. One of the major problems is that with higher wage levels in more developed countries means recycling isn't an economical process. Companies then ship their ewaste to other countries such as China, India, Ghana and Kenya for informal processing, which have significant health risks. There has been lots of talk about global legislation such as the Waste Electronics and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) a global legislation claiming to resolve the issues. However, due to businesses wanted to save money, they will ship the e-waste, generally illegally via the black market to place like the previously mentioned countries. I read one statistic somewhere recently that the life expectancy of somebody working on a Ghanaian Ewaste dump was 27. and there is a place in China you should read about called Guiyu, its a city of 160 000 people who work around 16 hours a day recycling ewaste manually, there have also been fairly recent studies on the health implications there. The term recycling is quite broad, and also limited, as it doesn't suggest how the thing is being recycled, it merely says it is. It is good that more things are being recycling, but we shouldn't forget the negative effects it is having on so many people worldwide.
@DD-cj6px8 жыл бұрын
Dom Harker well, you are right about how recycling does have its negative effects and......pretty much everything. Thank you for the information, I will look into those subjects and research them.

@Alexf2105 From Wikipedia: A joke (or gag) is a phrase or a paragraph with a humorous twist. It can be in many different forms, such as a question or short story. To achieve this end, jokes may employ irony, sarcasm, word play and other devices. Jokes may have a punchline that will end the sentence to make it humorous.

if electronics were not manufactured in countries with cheap labor and cheap materials maybe it would not be as bad. in north america there is always certain measures being taken in the manufacturing industry to recycle and use recycled components. north americans replaced labor and self-sufficiancy with corporations and consumerism, where everyone outsources. if we manufactured everything we want and need, the environment would be alot cleaner, and everyone would have a job again.

That said, since being immersed in caring for my reef tank and having taken an ENVIRO BIOL class cause it sounded interesting, I have become more aware as to the ill effects humans have on the environment and just watched a follow up to "The Cove" on the green channel. If we do not protect our oceans we will lose them forever. Hunting is sustainable, overfishing isnt! YAY DAFT PUNK!

@CountryKid1010 Also from Wikipedia: An idiot, dolt, or dullard is a mentally deficient person, or someone who acts in a self-defeating or significantly counterproductive way. Archaically the word mome has also been used. The similar terms moron, imbecile, and cretin have all gained specialized meanings in modern times. An idiot is said to be idiotic, and to suffer from idiocy. A dunce is an idiot who is specifically incapable of learning.

PCGuit I wish I agreed with you fully. However we are animals and we do have animal instincts. Thus human nature. The enviroment you are in does affect the way you think, but does not replace basic human nature, which I feel is "hardwired" into us. You see it everyday , in the way men and women react to each other, the mother instinct, "the leader of the pack", "the lone wolf", survival instinct, "packrats", etc..
@usespanner114 жыл бұрын
Yeah of course. but I think the best solution is getting mercury, lead out of manufactoring gadgets, electronic tools and we could export these enviroment-freindly products.

It's easy, tell them we won't send any more if they don't respect their environment. Why do you think we loose so many jobs to the Chinese? A big part of it is that they don't care about the environment or their workers safety and we do and therefor it costs us so much more to do it. This is the price they pay for cheap labor and to steal our jobs. They made the stuff in the first place, why don't they make it in a way that is easy to recycle? Because it's cheaper not to. It's their fault!

Why pick on Apple, who has at best a 4% share of the pc market? They are already the most expensive brand of pc (or one of the most) on the market. A better strategy would be to have Intel and M$ to enforce standards on the rest of the market which is many, many times bigger. IE.. To get the Windows logo, your product has to be environmentally friendly. But bigger than that is forcing China to enforce environmental standards in it's country. Let's talk about all the NEW coal fired plants there!

@jrgcool35 You have got to be kidding, and your post was 2 yrs ago? The city recycling place where I lived said they were shipping all the E-waste to Africa. Google all the 3rd world countries all our crap goes to, not to mention the rest of the so called civilized world. The poor countries are the real victims of our lust for technology and waste. I myself have disposed of 14 cell phones, 6 computers, etc. I've lost count of the broken TV's in my lifetime. Shame on all of us. Excellent video.
