Something strange has started going on since 2021. Thus it's high time to learn oneself how to organise as much food in ones own gardens as possible. I don't know how it looks in USA but in Poland for example, the heating fuels (coal, gas, wood) has become even 3x more expensive and there is a problem with availability. All of this makes me feel afraid about near future...

Mark - so good to see a new video!!! Thank you for telling things straight and in a balanced manner. I’m not a farmer and we only have a small home garden. The weather impact on our modest garden is evident even though twice the amount of plants from previous seasons were started. I have great concerns for the farmers and consumers across the globe. It seems that next year is going to be the revelation of really tough times to come. I lived in an arid third world country for a year a few decades ago. Water was restricted, sugar, flour, and cooking oils were rationed. Eggs,dairy, and meat were in short supply - in fact, the practice was to have 2 meatless days each week! Only the very wealthy had sufficient food. After we returned to the States I was very conscious of the amount of food and water waste we have here. I love the content of your channel and it is through the shared knowledge that I believe we can grow together and be able to make it through the coming days! Thank you for dedicated efforts! You are appreciated!💕

I learned a lot this year. We had the worst drought ever. My vegetable garden is mulched with grass/weed clippings. I am digging out the paths to raise the beds because it is usually too wet. Then the paths are filled with prunings from trees and bushes and weeds from my and my neighbors gardens. It's a variation of hugelkultur. Seems it helps with dry times as well as wet times. Tomatoes and corn did well. We just got a good rain so I'm putting in cover crops to improve the soil and help absorb and hold water. Some of the garden is still compacted clay. I will increase the mulch of landscaped areas with wood chips and leaves. They got too dry.
@iamorganicgardening

I place a foot of leaves last fall and in compact to 8 inch's that is how the tomatoes survived.

Thank you for telling your viewers what’s going on in a calm demeanor. It’s appreciated. In my area (southwest Ohio), peppers are selling for $1.39 a piece. Peaches are $1.00 a piece. I’ve already purchased next spring’s seeds and planted three apple and one Asian pear tree. All grass clippings and leaves go in the garden. We also get wood chips whenever we can for our heavy clay soil. We’ve lived here for four years and our soil is starting to feel like soil instead of brick-hard clay. It’s been a slow process, but seeing the results gives us the encouragement to keep going. Our tomatoes all were plagued with blight, except for the cherry tomatoes. They are prolific! While typing this, I’m watching you harvest potatoes. You’re making me laugh. That root!!!!! As my dad would say…and this is spelled phonetically…hyla digga eedapples. Meaning great big potatoes in Dutch.

The leaves also contain HUGE amounts of trace minerals from deep in the ground. The leaf mold is WAY more than a carbon source and sunblock! It has what the plants are missing the most. Sure, the sand silt and clay is there but the minerals in the leaves are readily bioavailable. You don't give that beautiful mulch enough credit lol. Those tomatoes are supercharged !

Good advice. I was thinking about stockpiling seeds too. I buy a lot of seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom, which is located near me. (I'm in Missouri too.) The Ozarks where Bakers Creek is located had a terrible drought this year w/ temps of 100+ for more than 60 days. I'm guessing there is a good chance a lot of their seed crop was ruined this year. Prices will probably go up and seeds will be hard to come by.

Yes indeed - here in London UK the season has been weird and terrible (and for the 2nd year) - beans simply not setting, squashes only putting out male flowers or none at all, potatoes tiny, root crops not growing at all, grapes feeble. I said very much the same as you to friends: get your seeds and potting compost now, because next spring it's going to be worse than the crazy rush at the start of lockdown. We've just had our first serious, heavy rain since late June here, overnight - hurrah!

Just a suburban backyard gardener, but this was a rough garden season for me. I expanded my garden and expected to have a great year. But it got unusually hot and dry much sooner than usual (May) and a lot of my spring crops just couldn't handle it. We started one in the fall of 2019, this spring we received donations from some seed companies. Trying to only do heirloom open pollinating plants, a few hybrids snuck in. Mark, Fantastic Sungold you have! How do you space them per cattle panel? I removed suckers just because I don’t have a strong trellis or space but maybe next year. I tried to grow with least fertilizers but I want to ask you what type of crops would work completely without fertilizers, in your context? Can you grow marketable corn, brassicas, celery, etc. without adding fertilizers? I want to try next year like you, just cover crops over winter, no till and no fertilizers. We’re in the Pacific NW and have zero rainfalls in the summer (plenty other times). What do you do in a drought? Much mulching? I mulched but more slug damage, so worse for me. Take care and warm regards to your family.
@iamorganicgardening
@iamorganicgardening Жыл бұрын
The cattle panel is 16 feet long. So I plant then every 2 feet. all Crops I have done a to z. Yes, corn also. Corn loves water. I mulch it also with leaf mold a I do for all my crops. It is a must to grow a living root all winter in a cover crop for this to work. I will show you How I mulch in late fall in the next video and cover crops with it. Today moved the mulch around and have seed at least a dozen large frogs. More frogs less slugs

Ive been organic gardening for over 30 years. I live in New Zealand. Last year's gardening was bad. This year it's crop fail after crop fail. I grow most plants by seed. Not all the seed is organic. The seed germinates ok, but when I prick them out and repot, they keep dying. It they are so weak, they just stay stunted. The potting mix is just rubbish. I think they are using bark as a base. So I'm not sure if is the seed, potting mix or pollutants in the air. All the hours Ive spent prepping for summer crops has gone to waste. 😢 They've ruined our beautiful planet.

You're confirming what I've been hearing from other youtube channels and iceagefarrmer. Means more coming from you so I will follow your advice. Not sure if we'll even be allowed to water outdoors next year if CA drought continues, that's what concerns me most, not being able to grow my own produce even if I have the seeds. My water bill is so high it's probably cheaper to buy food than grow it.

It depends on how big your garden is, but I find using a watering can saves water, also mulching. I’m from South Australia and our dams are over flowing, but we have droughts too, so I sympathise with they countries that are experiencing the heat now.
