I’m with you 100% on the value that Chianti delivers. We have been drinking more Chiantis and Riojas in the past year. We provide wine tasting events for people and poured a Chianti Classico after a 3-glass Pinot Noir flight (avg bottle price of $45). Our audience thought the Chianti was at least $50 - but it was only $12!! Great video!!

Hey Matthew, Chianti Classico nowadays represents a great choice for people who want to be introduced to italian wines. The average quality is pretty high and the 2019 was a decent vitage, tho not the best. Thank you from Italy for showcasing what we italians are able to do with that sweet nectar. And please, if you can, try some wine from my region (Campania). The whites are spectacular and there are some autochthonus grapes which you can only find in some places, like Ripoli, Fenile and Ginestra, found in Amalfi Coast which give the wine such an unique character. If you evere were to come to Amalfi Coast or Naples, let us know!

Grazie a mille... I have been to Campania before and was looking forward to attending Campania Stories (big press event of the new vintage) this year but unfortunately couldn't make it... I know producers aren't as high on 2019 as 2015 or 2016 but I think the wines really sing.

Great video as always and happy to see that you are getting some much deserved views. I agree with you that Chianti goes great with tomato based dishes but personally I like them even more with mushroom pasta, something about the interplay between the acidity and savouriness just does it for me. Also I'm a big fan of the Isole e Olena, it's pretty much my go to wine for a nice Chianti, easy to get in my market and I was never disappointed.

It's really interesting watching your reactions to the wines you're tasting. I'm honestly more of a beer/IPA guy, but my wife has turned me onto wines, in that we've "graduated" from Boone's Farm to actual wines, I know............ lol right? We recently did a wine cellar tour at the Williamsburg winery in VA, and they have some exceptional wines. Our favorite was the Petit Verdot varieties. I have had Chianti in the past, but I've not heard of Chianti Classico, although I'm very interested now. The wine cellar guide mentioned that lead crystal glasses were the best way to drink or taste wine, but I didn't get the opportunity to ask him why. Could you address that? I'm mostly a grocery store wine shopper, and my wine taste leans towards red blends, but I learned at the Williamsburg wine tour that red blends can consist of a single grape or multiple varieties, and many times this isn't mentioned on the bottle, but is implied with the name or region where produced. Anyhow, love your channel and looking to learn more about wines; we even got a small wine cooler/fridge several years back so we could store more, but somehow it seems to be more empty than full...................... hmmm

Good luck on your wine journey, it's a lot of fun especially if you are doing it with someone else... and don't worry... The first wine I ever had was Boone's Farm hahahahah... I tried a wine called Governo Toscano IGT which uses the same process as Amarone on the Ciliegiolo grape. I fell out of the chair. Are these 95+ wines, no. Probably 90-93 but extremely drinkable, with the right amount of tannins, fruit and balance of acid that lets you know you're are drinking something that's above average.

I like a Cabernet with Anice taste, do you have some easily available wines to suggest? The last best example I had recently was 2019 Faust Salvation Napa Valley Cabernet. Hard to find this vintage now. Thanks Matt for any suggestions you can provide.

I love sangiovese too ! Tuscany has to be one of my favorite region for wines. In chianti classico i like Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva and Castelvecchi Lodolaio. For more expensive chiantis i've enjoyed badia a passignano gran selezione and bindi sergardi's chiantis.

I prefer more fruit forward wines, especially red fruit forward not so much the darker fruits, but Im relatively new to wine and the first wine that I had that wow'd me was the Donna Laura Ali, which is a Sangiovese based wine which was only like 11$ and I'm curious are the Chianti Classico Annatas generally more fruit forward since its not aged in oak as long compared to the Riservas and Gran Seleziones or is that not true?
@drmatthewhorkey

It depends on the producer, part of Chianti Classico, and vintage. In general, I think Chianti Classico annatas could be fruity enough for you while introducing some earthy notes.

That is totally right for this and all wine, trusting your own palate. Hahaha no it’s exactly the same as every bottle, the glass is just clearer and the light hits it the right way. Last night tasted CampOlive Barbera d'Alba Superiore Paitin Neive Italy: Had the most subtle nuance of oak and spice, very smooth with fleshy texture; the overall lingering mouthfeel was an impressive 13 seconds and I strongly agreed using WASM that the structure and body was light to medium bodied. Good balance with acidity. WASM price pointed the wine at $34.57 with an overall score of 90.96 and a QVR score of 1.72%. Since I paid $33.99, WASM indicating that price point is about right, but like you always looking for those value wines that are hidden gems. Do you think you will transition to Barbera from Sangiovese as your favorite varietal in a few years?

As one of the truly great wine growing regions Chianti Classico has long suffered from massive swings in quality and provenance. From $4 buck-chuck to some of the finest reds, the range of outcomes is unacceptable. They ought to learn from Montalcino’s success and lead with provenance and terroir. 100% Sangiovese and leave the “foreign” grapes outside the sub zone. Introduce new and comprehensive rules and regulations for quality. I’d love to see a blind tasting Chianti Classico vs. Rosso di Montalcino. They are in a similar price point though I find the latter often performs better, especially on clarity and inherent complexity of fruit.

@@drmatthewhorkey Would never infer you are a rookie; however, pertaining to direct translation, Blood of Jupiter, difference? "Most people think that Jove and Jupiter are the same person, but there is actually a big difference between the two. Jove is the king of the gods in Roman mythology, while Jupiter is the king of the gods in Greek mythology. They both have a lot of similarities, but there are also some big differences."

"For example, Jove is often depicted as an old man with a beard, while Jupiter is usually shown as a young man. Jupiter is also associated with the planet Jupiter, while Jove is not." I realize that some have drawn a congruent parallel but as someone approaching their mid 40's surely the direct translation of Sangiovese is Jupiter not Jove
