That second kachori was made with potato and tapioca, as that lady said tapioca in Hindi is called "sabudana". So maybe that earthy flavour was from tapioca

For Gold - There are many other better shops where you could have much more variety. For Shikanji - Best shop for shikanji is Nagori Sweets in Sarafa Bazar (however the shikanji there is finished there by 2-4 PM depending on demand)

Annand bazar is close to my home and this kachori Shop was my go to place, currently being in Mumbai i Miss Indore sometimes

You should have tried Maharaja kachori corner and Mittal Kachori at Jail Road, also Bam Kachori at Kanch Mandir. The kachoris at these outlets are much better than at Ravi Alpahar.
