Basically if it’s just The M3 M4 M5 badges it’s the top of the line full M Car but the cars with M340 M440 M550 ect it just has the M sport package and some parts from the real M sport but not a full M… think of it as what a scat would be to a hellcat

the numbers all do have meaning. they usually mean the kind of motor they have. anything that ends in “40i” for bmw’s will have the b58 engine (the one that’s know for being in the supra) and for the 4 series, 3 series and 2 series anything with that motors is considered “M-lite” which is the same as like an s4 for audi but not an rs4. the rs4 is like the top of the line performance.

The 40i means the 6 cylinder b58 engine, then the m2 m3 m4, x3M and x4m have the s58

Anything that has M in front is going to have BMW’s m sport package, if it has. 30i it’s a b48 v4 , a 40i is a b58 v6. M3,m4,m5, etc… are all top of the line bmw sport focused cars
