I stopped at Wal-Mart today to pick up some ratchet straps and passed a woman who was working with an employee to pick out 4 bikes for a family she is sponsoring for Christmas. I helped her pick out the best bang for her buck for a 13 year old girl, 8 and 10 year old boys, and a 7 year old girl. I tested brakes, shifters, and overall setup for her, and helped her get the right size bikes for each kid. Ended up offering to buy the oldest kid's bike to allow her to get better models overall, and gave her $40 cash towards helmets. All of my own bikes are bike shop brands, but I remembered your tips and think those kids will have a great Christmas, and bikes that will work well for them. Thanks for posting this video.

I just wish that Walmart did light bike work like it does car work. I have my local shop for big stuff, but it'd be nice to be able to roll the nighthawk or finiss (both are from Walmart) into the back for a cable change while I get groceries. That and the assembly... You have some decent stores (looking at you South Duff) that know what they're doing, but some really don't...

Assemblers don't assemble them any different then you do if you got it shipped to your house. Now why are they looking broken or not correctly formed in store? Their display bikes for one, Their not ment to be truly taken off the rack and ridden out the door. And another case would be for some places to assemble them wrong on propose or loosen such area's to detour thieves from stealing the bikes and riding off with them since most places don't lock them up and these aren't cheap for some. Another case can be these bikes are tested under alot of different people when they take off the rack and ride them for a moment, putting stress largely on different parts of the bikes, So sometimes their bent, broken or so forth. Key object here when buying a department store bike. is to ask for the product in the box, They normally keep quite a few in the back of their store that's still in the box. This is gonna be Brand new, and have no faults to it. Do not ask for them to assemble it, because it doesn't take a genius to do so when 90% of the bike is already built. Seat, Handlebar, front tire, pedals. Then just adjust the stem, brakes, and derailleur if needed and your good. and make sure to fill the tires. It's so simple you can do it just like putting on your clothes everyday.
@SeaCowsBeatLobsters
@SeaCowsBeatLobsters 4 жыл бұрын
@@KillerRaptorr -1st point is valid -If you're trying to deter thieves you would lock the bikes or take the pedals off. Leaving the stem bolts loose is just gonna cause injury to the unlucky customer who buys it. -Bolts don't just loosen because of repeated test rides if they were properly torqued in the first place -If a bike gets bent from someone sitting on it funny its a piece of trash -The average person would not find derailleur/brake adjustment easy. Are you insane? -Your grammar and spelling are atrocious. Proof read your comments
@KillerRaptorr
@KillerRaptorr 4 жыл бұрын
@@SeaCowsBeatLobsters Locks aren't something alot of shops want to do. Maybe you don't understand the general view of 'Display'. Go look it up. But in simple. Display bikes are mainly to get a general idea of the bike. Sit on maybe, give abit of a push. But not really fully drive them. So some bolts and what not would likely be loosen to forward costumers to buy from the box. REALLY?! Oh man so if my bike is threaded on, my bolts will NEVER come loose from riding it. DANG! i haven't seen that happen abunch of times. If a 300pound person sat on your wooden chair only built to handle a kid, what you think is gonna happen? It takes a few seconds for a goof now adays to whip out their phone and look 'How to adjust derailleur' on youtube. Parktool has one. Doesn't take a genis now adays to adjust them. Next time, use some common sense.

I just bought a Kent KZR on Friday. It's 120, currently on rollback for 99 dollars. Front only disc break, shimano twist shifters (looking to upgrade to trigger later) , Shimano rear derailer (not tourney, but the cheaper one), kazano (sp?) front derailer, pogo-like suspension fork on the front. For that price range, I'm happy. I wasnt expecting the moon for a starter bike, but it's got enough good features to my liking. It also looks cool too. I credit this channel 100% for educating me on bike parts. I made an informed decision, and I'm very pleased. Thanks kev!

There is more to consider than simply hills or the lack of them. I live on the coast. Level ground. But riding into a 10 or 15 mph wind is much easier with lower gears. And with the wind, shift into high and fly!

Kev. Joe when telling people about the difference on geared cruisers. Make sure you let them know there is no coaster break. It at the handle. Most people who have cruisers don’t use rim break. So let them know the difference. I do not know if you state that already but I do think you do great on the bike budget.

I agree with the reviewer, he makes excellent points about the best ways to shop for a bike at Walmart. The thing about Walmart bikes is that most people who shop for bikes from Walmart are looking for a low cost solution. Most people can't afford, or don't wish to pay at least $500 dollars for an entry level Mt Bike, or $350 for a bmx. So these consumers choose Walmart. I think Walmart is a great place to get a low cost, or first bike as a gift. I second how to choose bikes like the reviewer. A good step is to be sure to read the instructions, and warranty material that is supplied with the bycicle. You will know what type of damage, or possibly improperly manufactured component is covered under the walmart warranty. Walmart bikes have gone a long way to improve their line, and the quality of their products has also improved. Another good idea, if you don't have the tools to follow the instructions, is to take the bike to a local bike store if someone at Walmart cannot help after an inspection with the intended rider. The local bike store can help in properly adjusting the bike to fit the rider, they can also inspect the hardware for proper torque and adjust brakes among other things. Something to be aware of with any bike, even if it costs 10k dollars, is that it has an initial break in period, after which the bike will require adjustments to continue to provide a quality ride. After the initial adjustment, the bike may need additional periodic adjustment, but the first is the most important. More expensive bikes will hold their adjustments better, but the first one after the break in period is the most critical. This initial break in period is probably the reason why some people think these lower cost bikes are so bad, they are not high end, but after the break in, they will feel loose, possibly make extra noise, and basically feel less than confidence inspiring. Overall, Walmart provides excellent beginner bikes, and even some bikes that are worth upgrading, or growing with the riders abilities. I am now a 41 year old male. One bike in particular that I think was a very popular BMX is the Ambush. I actually purchased one of these for myself. I made changes to the bike by removing excess components such as the chain guard and the foot pegs. I even upgraded the tires some better quality ones after the originals were worn out. Very fun bike. But the bike is meant for a young kid, maybe 8-12. So obviously, the bike did not withstand the abuse that I put it through, after a few drops to flat ground, the part that holds the handlebars on bent. But the drops were about 3.5-4 foot down, and 6-7 feet across. The bent component was to be expected, the bike is meant for a kid. Still a good bike, and kids that stay in the BMX genre, can bend and break components. In my opinion, all the bike needed was a chromoly stem, rather than mild steel. Adult review of the Ambush BMX, awesome low cost starter for the 8-12 year old, with some upgrades or repairs, it will grow a bit with the riders abilities. An expert might say they cannot repair the bike, but the stem is an older standard, best to check online to find a replacement, as these components in the local bike shop will be of the newest standard. The Ambush uses 1", the newer standard is 1 1/8 inch. The 1 1/8 inch part will not fit. Some local bike shops are more helpful than others, so something to be mindful of in that situation. Walmart bikes, 👏😀

This channel is really turning into a consumers dream. Excellent advice with regards to their website. Could you please include both 29 and 27.5 wheelsets in your next Hyper hydro installment, because you have both sets and it would be cool to see the bike transform from a mid size trail bike to XC 29er. It would also be cool if you could set the XR PRO up as a 27.5 bike as well.

Walmart bikes are perfect for kids who are simply looking for a new hobby; a throw-away bike to take down to the grocery store and not worry about it getting stolen; or for old people looking for a light cruise in the park. So, they're not THAT bad... Just the other day, I saw an old geezer riding what appeared to be an electric bicycle, so not all old people are dumb.... or broke.

In case of squeaky brakes I have found that the best solution is replacing the brake pads themselves. You can also try cleaning the rim surface with disc brake cleaner or angling the pads, but most of the time this only reduces the amount of noise coming from the brakes.

The things I would look out for when searching for a decent bike would be for a proper sealed bottom bracket, as they are better made and last a lot longer. Also look for a rear derailleur that is fitted to a gear hanger and not onto the frame, as the gear hanger is designed to break so that your frame doesn't. You also want to try and find a bike with a threadless stem, as they are just a lot better.

I'd like to add one more thing to look at, coming from personal experience. Make sure there aren't any plastic details in the transmission. My Mongoose Tyax Comp '13 had a plastic shoulder in its front derailleur parallelogram, a part that is always under stress. It snapped a few months later when I was simply riding home down a flat road and almost managed to send me under a car. And that was $600 Mongoose bike, not the dirt cheap one yet they still managed to do it wrong.

Walmart bikes are definitely not full trail machines, however the right bike can become an easy and exciting modification platform. Here in Canada, one bike I bought had components only seen on high end brand name bikes from professional bike shops, sealed cartridge bottom bracket, 1x8 drivetrain, Altus derailleurs and shifters and for the first time I saw press fitted sealed headset bearings in a department store bike. It was a CCM shadow that was released last year. It was the very first department store bike ever with being such a step up and hopefully they push more of their bikes to have those components, but like Walmart, Canadian Tire dictates the components installed on the bikes. The CCM shadow I highly recommend for ANYONE on a strict budget but want a mountain bike that you can truly take to the trails with confidence despite being a department store bike. give it a good tune up just to be safe. I ride a Giant Trance 3 now but that CCM shadow is a huge step up from a typical department store bike and I hope to see more of them on the trails. Happy riding boys and girls!

my first mountain bike was the Mongoose Alert, and to this day, even tho im 5,14 i still ride it. sure, its 3 years old and theres a little rust here and there, tires go flat a lot, and its worn out, but i still keep it because (1) it was discontinued, and (2) it was a birthday gift.

@@KevCentral yessir. They won't even allow you to order it online and ship it it their store. Pretty dumb if you ask me. Probably why I don't ever shop there. I hate the atmosphere/people that are in that place lol.

Thanks for your review. I was that close to get a Genesis v2100 or incline before watching your videos. I'd have spend 168 plus tax and missed the 199 deal for a Schwinn santis. I'm also interested in finding out the potential of me and the bike. I rode a bike from elementary school to high school in China. I've always had a 26", and during high school I have to raise seat all the way up to stretch my legs. Now I'm looking to get back to biking for fun and for exercises.

One big tip I recommend if you buy any bike is to learn how to tune and maintain it AND go through the bike. While you won't go wrong spending good money on a good bike (especially if you rely on it for commuting or plan on hitting more difficult mountain bike trails) but the biggest issue with walmart bikes is that they are built by people who aren't trained bike mechanics and get paid the same as the people stocking shelves of canned soup. Im not bashing walmart or their employees, im just stating the fact that people who are passionate about something typically find themselves more in the environment of that passion..... 5 star Quality chefs dont typically work at steak n' shake. If you do plan on commuting or doing more hard-core mountain biking then pay for the engineering and quality of a good bike. A $600 commuter bike will be a better buy than a $600 car if you live in an area where thats an option and an $800 mountain bike will hold up to a lot of abuse and be less likely to acquaint your face with a hill due to a part snapping. But for starting out or for recreational rides of little consequence a walmart bike can be ok. Just remember, never ride a bike farther than you trust it to carry you back

With the nishiki I think if you do but a new fork on it you should put something like a fox 32 on it you can get a cane creek ec44 and it replaces the bottom cup on your headset and makes it a taper if your head tube is 44mm in inner diameter

Those walmart off-brand disk brakes with warped rotors usually work much worse than their cheap rim brakes and a nightmare to adjust. The main reason they introduce those is to deal with wheels that are not true.

If you get a Big Box Store bike. Have some one set it up and go through it. Like a local bike shop. Its not that expensive. They are thrown together by inexperienced people and can be dangerous.

Bought the black and orange Mongoose with the mag wheels a couple of years ago. Thing weighs as much as a soviet tank and had to tune the brakes, shifter etc. when I first got it ( including replacing the crappy plastic brake levers for metal ones ) but for what I use it for, a 15 mile long gradual downhill grade at a nearby trail you can't beat it. A lot of fun for cheap and if it gets stolen I can replace it quickly and cheaply.

I shared this video with my friend because we went out for the first time as a group on the local trail this past Saturday. My one friend right away wanted to upgrade from the old bike he had and he bought a GT aggressor Pro from Dick's Sporting Goods. My other friend had an old Giant mountain bike sitting in his basement and we just need to give it a quick tune-up. But my last friend has a budget of around $200 and it's most likely going to get something from a big box store so I sent him this video and I've sent him some of your other videos and I think it will help him a lot.

In my experience it never pays to buy a big box bike. I used to have them forever and every time I would ride my bike for more that half an hour I would just be like I need to get off this effen thing. Then one day I came across a hybrid specialized that someone had abandoned at the co-op I was living at and realized that it was amazingly better than all the crappy bikes I had been riding my whole life. Since then I have been buying used mid level name brands such as Trek and Giant and will probably never go back to buying crappy big box bikes.

I can't wait for the ancheer review. I have been looking at that bike for a while now. I have been debating whether to build my own or get this ancheer or a small ebike like the swagtron. I have been wanting a fatbike and if I build my own, I have been looking at the mongoose fatbikes. I have a huffy cruiser already and it seems to be a dependable pedal bike but I am debating if I really need a ebike. My legs have gotten really strong and I ride my huffy nel lusso up hills and I no longer need to take a break and on flat ground, I can push up to 18mph on a single speed nel lusso with stock gearing and I am thinking about putting a smaller rear cog on it to give me a challenge and I can get up to 20mph on a flat.
This Walmart MTB looks incredible, but is it really?
