Re-upload: When buying an older bike, you expect to find a few things that need fixing, but this was getting a bit ridiculous. By far, this Ducati Monster 620ie has been the worst one I have bought, but at the same time, I suppose it was the cheapest.
Join me as I mused over this buying decision and the aftermath of buying an older Ducati.

I feel your pain , I spent yesterday afternoon trying to sort out the ajustement of the brake light switch , fixed that only for the indicators to pack up , sorted out corroded connection, only for the indicators relay to pack up …. Had a beer and pushed it back into the shed of dread ….

Hey Andy, I kinda had a similar experience my first Ducati picked up the 2002 M900 around Oct last year too, simply because it was cheap and I like the old school look, however it turns out to have a knocking engine (didn't notice it) and I am debating if to try and get it fixed or let go. Any suggestions.

That’s a tough one. Fixing a Ducati will be a lot of work. If you’ve got the time, space and most importantly, patience, have a go. After my experience with the GPX250, I’ve realised I want to ride, little jobs, ok, but rebuilds and extensive troubleshooting is draining.

I have had dozens and dozens and dozens of motorcycles since the 60s. I can’t help it. Mostly standard or sport or two of touring or road racing machines or trials bikes or play bikes for off-road riding I never had a Ducati because of the valve adjustment cost..A buddy of mine bought one new, and the dealer told him, he’ll do the first valve adjustment for only $3000. as a special favor for a new customer.. he never had the valves adjusted, and he still has the motorcycle 28 years later. He has never had them even checked. Because he knows it will cost a fortune. As a matter of fact, he has multiple motorcycles like I do, he just doesn’t ride it much because he knows it should have the valves checked… I know a few Ducati owners, none of them has ever had their valves checked because of the cost.. I rode a few of them, stiff suspension, great brakes, they feel lighter than they look, deceptively quick.. So right now here in October 2022. I ran into a guy, a doctor with four motorcycles.. He asked me if I would be interested in buying his Ducati 750, it’s a 2002 he bought it new. he has not even started it for a few years. being a motorcycle junkie since the late 1960s, I usually buy a motorcycle if the price is good, and then I decide if I like it or not. If I like it I’ll ride it for a while, one bike I bought I rode for 16 years, and sold it for more than I paid for it 16 years earlier. I don’t lose on motorcycles being an ex motorcycle mechanic at three different shops in my younger years, and I sold motorcycles part time in the evenings and weekends for 17 years.. But I never had a Ducati or a Harley or an English motorcycle although I have always wanted a Norton commando.. I have had for Moto Guzzis.. I have owned one or the other guzzi from 1979 till 2021, my last one was a Norge. I actually have three youtube videos of me riding the Norge on a winding technical road that I really like back in 2020.. but I’m not sure about buying a Ducati, even if the price is really great. I don’t even know where there is a dealer within 100 miles of me here in Pittsburgh with a good mechanic. Because I know it takes a special set of tools and shims and procedure to adjust those Desmos valves.. I could probably do it, but I don’t know if I want to. I like the perfect Japanese motorcycles. Right now I have a 19 Kawasaki Z 400 and a Yamaha royal star venture.. I have multiple videos of maintenance and accessories I have added to the Kawasaki and the Venture here on KZfaq. I leave all my machines totally stock in the engine airbox and exhaust departments. The factory knows more than I do. I learned that in my road racing days. When I learned to keep my hands off of the engine, I ended up winning six road racing championships, two time national champion, because I left my machine totally stock instead of dialing it out like most other riders were doing.. they never learned to leave their machine alone and just concentrate on riding especially on how to use the brakes.. I mean really know how to use the brakes.. I’m gonna go look at this Ducati next week. But I’m not sure if I wanna go out on that limb

@@Emu_Emu I missed this reply, sorry. I would say SV....just that little bit nicer all over. The styling goes to the Ducati, but maintenance and parts, definitely SV.

@@VroomBroomZoom great choice, mate. Got meself a Cagiva Raptor 650ie with SV engine. Fun, reliable daily rider. Am still curious at S2 or S4, though.

@@VroomBroomZoom I disagree on that. I've had a 95 Monster 600, a 2002 SV650, a '17 SV650 (which I'm currently selling) and now have a "11 Monster 1100 EVO. The SV is a bit more reliable and less expensive but the Monsters have way better brakes, suspensions and chassis, more character and are just a joy to ride as well as beautiful. To me the sweet spot for everyday riding as I do is a 696/796/1100 Monster (which is why I got mine obviously)
