In this video Dave touches on the pros and cons of purchasing an older motorhome.
Share our journey as we embark on our full-time RV excursions and bring you exciting videos of the beauty we call the United States of America. We have been part time RV traveling for over 20 years and have owned just about every type of recreational vehicle (with the exception of a truck camper or tent) LOL. We've had our share of mishaps but more great successes along the way. We are excited to bring our travels and experiences (both good and bad) to you. We too are constantly learning, so we welcome any comments, suggestions and tips that you can offer us as well. Your Country Coach looks beautiful, Dave! A little over 5 years ago, we retired and bought a 1999 National Tropical gasser. We have been living it FT since and loving every minute. It was the best decision we ever made. It was a one owner coach in great shape with extensive maintenance records and only 28k miles on the odometer. It sold for over $100k new in 1999, but we got it for only $15k! It's great being debt free, isn't it? Not only did the original owner pay for all the depreciation, but they handled all the warranty issues, so when we got it, all the little bugs and issues had been taken care of long ago. We have been traveling around the country with it and it has been very reliable. In fact, it hasn't seen the inside of the shop since we bought it, as we maintain it ourselves. Sure, as you use any RV things will break and wear out over the years. For instance, we repaired our steps (for very little money, replacing some worn out plastic parts with metal ones) and our slide out motor (all it took was some JB weld to repair a cracked transmission housing, making it stronger than when it came from the factory when we were done.) And of course, components in appliances like furnace blowers, water heater burners and A/C units eventually wear out and must be either repaired or replaced. This is true in relatively new units, let alone one that is over 20 yrs. old. But because we have no monthly note and our insurance is super cheap on an older rig, we have plenty money in the bank to replace things, when they wear out without having it impact our lifestyle. Counterintuitively, an older Class A with good bones is often much cheaper to own and operate than a brand new one is, which may look pretty on the outside, but underneath the shiny facade it may not as well made structurally - as evidenced by all the cracked frames we have been hearing about recently. We discovered we love to boondock, living virtually for free in some of the most beautiful places imaginable on Forest Service and BLM land. We sure wouldn't want to bring a brand-new rig down muddy, rutted Forest Service roads, across fields, sand washes and such like we do our rugged, older home. We installed a giant solar system on her and haven't plugged into a power pedestal at an RV park in a year and a half, as we can run everything in our coach, including our A/C units powered strictly by the sun. We can even run our EG-4 mini split heat pump 24/7 if needed. Over 5,000 watts of solar, 23.5kwh of batteries onboard lets us do so. We designed and built it ourselves, saving quite a bit of money, but still, a system of this size doesn't come cheap - at around $11,500 including the $1,500 heat pump. The reason we could afford a big solar/battery system like this on our meager retirement income is all the money we saved boondocking with our older coach. Not only do we save lots of money living this lifestyle, but it gives us more flexibility, opening up more places and seasons where we can comfortably stay too. Life is good.

@@SuperSushidog thanks! The old Tropicals were built very well and over the years I’ve seen many good examples of them. At one point in time we almost purchased one but it was sold before we could move on it. Thank you again!

Buying any type of RV new is risky business. They are leaving the manufacture incomplete and there's no quality control. Used pre 2019 is the safest route. Your "new to you" coach is beautiful, would love to see a tour of the inside.

Hi Dave, we just put a down payment on a 2003 Allure 36' Sunriver (370HP Cummins), also from Premier RV in Junction City. It's a real beautiful coach and can't wait to take delivery! I've subbed to your channel since we have mutual interests :) Hope your are enjoying the journey in you CC! We have a 5 year old yellow lab (Nala) that just loves the RV also :)

Congratulations!!! Who was your salesman? Make sure you stay there a few days to shake it down. They are such great people. We are likely going back next year to have some upgrades done. Hopefully we see you out on the road sometime. Where you from?

@@All-in-RVing Thanks! We're super excited. I traded in our 2019 Tiffin 32SA gas coach. Damon was my sales guy, super nice. Met and chatted with Louie as well. Louie was actually the one that picked up the coach that I purchased so he gave me his impressions of driving it (he loved it btw!) Everyone I met at Premier was simply awesome! In about 3 weeks I'll be driving the Tiffin down and swapping coaches :) We're from near Seattle (Snohomish), so it's a 5-6 hour drive to Junction City. We're going to store it at their indoor storage facility since driving around Seattle is a nightmare, not to mention the storage prices are more than double theirs up here. We mostly travel to Oregon anyway (Nehalem, Cannon Beach, etc.) so having the coach down there is actually a good thing. They did tell me that it'll be a full day for the walk through and suggested that I stay a day or two on their property, as you mentioned. All in all, I couldn't be happier! Where are you guys from? Hope to meet you as well!

The condition of the exterior roof okay? I spoke to a couple who purchased a 10 year old Coach about the size of yours and the first storm she noticed some small leaks. A few storms later and the roof was leaking like a stuck pig. Unfortunately they had to replace the entire roof. I didn’t want to ask them the cost but I’m sure it’s not cheap. Id like to get a nice diesel Class B but I like to carry an equalizer and a lot of states are so anti-equalizer it snaps me back to reality. A lot of states honor my carry permit but some id like to visit would throw me in jail just for having it in the van. Washington DC, New York, California, Connecticut etc… Y’all be safe as this November I fear civil unrest is going to kick off so please prepare now and have plans to be in a safe, secure place. God Bless.
