I was born in the 60s and I remember as a kid being able to get a tent and gear then go camping with your mates for next to nothing, it was cheap fun.
@1adamuk

It still can be. Decathlon for example sell decent camping gear and low prices and you have the eqivalent of 'cheap and fun' camping. But if you want to camp on mountains or carry a tent for thousands of miles then you should spend a lot more money.

Funny enough but most of RAB and similar equipment/clothing is made for extreme conditions(mountaineering, expeditions and etc) and not your average Sunday stroll in a Lake District. Proper gear can and will save your life. Now how much you value your life is probably personal. If you are simply walking when sun is out for a few hours on weekend you don't need this stuff. I'm big RAB fan and once you try it in a certain conditions - you will not want anything else and then you can actually justify "high" price.

@rurintojas I don't know about that. The worst jacket I ever wasted my money on was a Rab Myriad Neostretch. It claimed to be a waterproof but leaked like a teabag over the entire jacket on its first outing. It was a catastrophic failure. Unfortunately, I had the jacket for a while before it was put to proper use so I could no longer return it. £200 down the pan. I won't buy anything with the Rab logo on now.

So many years back one of my best friends worked as store manager at the British arctic expedition in Cambridge. As we shared a house are garage would end up filled with stuff at the end of an expedition or when they got the yearly grant . So much stuff was going in the skip . A couple of the things I remember was my sleeping bag which was over £600 in 1990, some really amazing sets of boots and tons of these great coats and cagoules made of some stuff called gore-tex. This was years before I had the internet so I just used it and realised how good it was not realising what it was . I can only imagine what some of it would cost nowadays.

It is a good place to get all the Rab gear, they also have a good rewards system, I literally have to google everything though because some of the Rab gear is cheaper in other online stores. Just remember though, Once you have all the gear you need, You don’t really need to go back, don’t fall for the gear hype and keep dreaming about it, There’s no perfect gear, don’t waste your life in the pursuit of it, enjoy what you have and make the best of it. KZfaqrs love to tell you about the next best thing, mostly bullshit and content spamming.

@Im_With_Stupid
@Im_With_Stupid 17 күн бұрын
That's never going to happen, but you might hit the stage where you realize you're usually not accomplishing anything by doing so and stop doing it. The urge to "upgrade" will always be there, though. Makers know this, which is why they keep releasing new products that are functionally no better than something else they've already been selling for years. It's why Osprey makes the Rook backpack that would be more aptly named the Hook. It's a good quality pack but it's not the kind of pack you'd buy an Osprey for. It's purposely designed to both get you used to having an Osprey *and* disappoint you at the same time. That way you're very likely to come back in 6 months and buy a $350 Atmos to get what you wanted. Now they've got you for two packs when, were it not for the Hoo... I mean the Rook, you'd have probably been perfectly happy with that $150 Kelty you were originally looking at.

Am I the only one who feels the "discount price" is just the actual price, and the RRP is just made-up bollocks? What maniac is paying 700 quid for a smallish looking tent?! 400 discount price is the high end of tent prices I thought?? Or some of those jackets for 330 RRP being "reduced" to 198? So it's still a 200 quid jacket? Sheesh!

Surely everyone always knew RRP is nonsense, but it should also be obvious that members' prices, discounts, and "sales" just the actual intended price, and the "regular" price is a bluff to make those look like bargains. Ignore the size of price drop; what matters is whether it's worth the asking price.
@ApexCypher_
@ApexCypher_ 17 күн бұрын
Discount doesn’t exist. You are absolutely correct. The RRP is just an inflated number to make the actual price seem like a bargain. This practice used to be illegal but it’s not monitored anymore. The government doesn’t care as long as they get the VAT.

Funnily enough, my cousin was telling me about this place just a couple of days ago. I have the crux (not crux light). Very compact stove that folds up and fits in to the concave bottom of a gas canister. Was only using it yesterday. I don't use gas much, preferring alcohol, but that is a good wee stove combined with the Optimus clip on windshield. On low with a heat exchanger pot, it will boil a pint of water in less than two minutes The light version doesn't fold so isn't as compact.

Wow, decades since I've been to Alfreton. Didn't know it was hiding this little outdoor gem. Great video as ever Paul. As someone who works in retail, RRP's are to a degree inflated and fictitious. It's not to say there are not a lot of deadly serious calculations that go into the pricings at every single stage of the chain....because there most certainly are. But the margins are largely obligatory percentages that have to be present for everyone involved to cover their bases, and they're still covered when the product is "on offer". It doesn't make it any less jaw dropping to know the Nalgene you paid £15 for cost the shop under £1 per piece. Such is retail, it's not the products dictating the pricing, it's the overheads.

If they can sell a 700 quid tent for 400 then that tells me just how much mark up there is on RRP. Basically, never pay RRP. I know a business has to make a profit but there is profiting and then here is profiteering. At 50% of RRP they are still making a profit plus covering stock purchase, rents, wages, overheads etc. So what does this tell us about how they price things in the first place? It is what the market will bear, basically. Enjoying the variety of content, Paul.
