Nathan Bucolo I've always found record-flipping to be therapeutic. I loved doing that back in the 1970s and it's a very enjoyable and nostalgic treat nowadays. I just wish there was a lot more record shops now. Back then, in the city, you could find two or three in one street. Every Woolworths had a record section. We also had shops called John Menzies and they all had a record section and I used to go round the corner from my work most lunch times to browse the records. I just loved the atmosphere of those shops and still do. Most record shops were smallish more intimate sized shops, but there was the large record shops like Tower Records too. I'm so glad vinyl records made a come back.

miwbalz16 Quite often you can get records for great prices at stores and car boot sales, I recently got Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN for £10 (usually 25+) and Beastie Boys Licensed to Ill for £10 (£22 online) brand new at a car boot sale and I also got a few 2 for £25 on sale at my favourite record store (usually £18+ each). I do enjoy supporting local record stores and fairs and car boot sellers but at the same time, I won’t pay ridiculous prices when I know I can get them cheaper elsewhere, a couple quid sure, but £30 for a single LP? Nah.

This is Brian. I walked into a record store and discovered the owner applying lemon furniture polish to a collectible record to cover the defects. Then he buffed it to a shiny new finish. Then he priced it as a perfect collectible record. This is a scam as old as they come. You can see this used in records online as well as in stores. Be careful of this one, returns are usually not tolerated by these scammers. Use your nose and if you smell furniture polish, like Pledge brand, on your record purchase, you've been scammed and the playability of your purchase will be atrocious. Be very careful. Thank you for your videos.

Definitely in person! Everything about it is just a lot of fun! The staff, other customers, even the smell of the place once you're close up to the records, but by a long way, the best bit is the bin digging! Flipping through record after record, the titles, the artwork, the potential for a rare find...! I love it all!!!

I live in rural Pennsylvania so when I bought my record player I thought the only way I would be able to buy records is online due to the fact that record stores aren't popular around where I live. Luckily, after hitting up google maps I found that there is a record store literally walking distance from my house.

It just occurred to me that I have never bought a record (vinyl) online. Not that I'm opposed to it; not that I won't be doing it soon. It's just that I really enjoy going to the record shop. There is a great record shop that is a bit of a drive from where I live; I only go there once a month or so. They ain't cheap, but they don't sell crap. Locally, there is a little shop that sells a bit of everything, but the owner is a collector of vinyl, so he knows his stuff. If I have a particular album in mind, especially if it is a reissue from a quality label, I will probably buy online. But I love the 'discovery' aspect of spending a couple of hours in a record shop.

Fair prices. Only problem is the lack of care with how they store the 78s This past week I think I cleared one shop of all it's trance vinyls. The cassette library is also pretty good. A little bit of everything for everyone.

I have been going to The Rocking Bull in Antwerp for most of my music. Other than that, I've bought a few off of my uncle and some more at the bi-yearly record collectors event in Utrecht, and finally, the greater portion of rare stuff I've bought at festivals, mostly Doctor Steel Mailorder, really great stuff they got. Only like 5% of my collection has been bought online.

~ In a big city, look for stores that sell vintage goods, but that don't necessarily specialize in records. I have found duplicates for myself, and unusual wonderful finds in such non-specific thrift stores. I updated my Elvis Presley discography AND found duplicates of classic Beatle records (45s with picture jackets!) in such stores. Crate-digging as an art form since the 1970s! Cheers, DAVEDJ ~

Its a smaller store, so there are not as many titles as in larger stores. But if you can't find what you are looking for, they always go out of their way to order it for you, if you want them to, that is. I also feel good since I am spending my money at a local business!

Hi. I'm a huge vinyl lover with a large record collection. I do buy and listen to CD s still but it's predominantly records I play. They sound a lot better and they are cool to look at. I am definitely a record addict and it was only during the decade just gone that people would say - " records are out" . Now I knew that was bullshit because there's a record store that this guy I know owns who only sell s vinyl that he's successfully ran since 1994. I realize how many record lovers exist here in England when ever I visit his shop, I'm always coming out with something. Everywhere I go now I have to find a record store to find something I never heard before but fall in love with it. I must come to America one day and do the same there.

definitely buying records in person is a better experience. I mean yeah you won't find records that came from a different country than the one's that were released in your country. I mean it's definitely possible to find one if you're patient with your digs but it is definitely rare to come by. For instance I pulled out a UK-only released record of one of my favorite bands that I thought I would've never expected to see there. Because after all, it was from the UK, how did it end up here in Florida? haha. And of course the crate digging experience is damn fun than just buying records online. You never what you might pull out of there! It is also much safer too as you get to expect the records and play them before buying knowing for sure the record is worth keeping or not. also as an added bonus you can make friends of the staff or people who crate dig there as well. Online should be a last resort IMO, if you're unable to find that record that you want after looking EVERY record store or stores that sell records near you. Because online can be a gamble you're paying high price for shipping and you're taking a gamble on the condition of the record when it arrives here. So overall, buying records in person is better because it's safer, it's fun, you never know what you might find there, and you never know the record store owner might have that particular record you've been looking for, if you tell him or her about it.

I tend to buy mostly online, usually due to selection. I listen to a lot of metal and metal subgenres, mostly death metal, and a lot of stores either don't carry my favourite bands at all or have a very small section for them. They also rarely carry the lesser-know bands within that genre, so no new discoveries. Online stores, however, especially the record labels' store usually sells everything you could ever want to find. Nuclear Balst Records' store is my main source for vinyl for that reason: they usually carry products for every band they promote, and since they are one of the biggest labels in the metal scene I usually find what I want. They also sometimes have limited edition colored vinyl or DLP or LP+EP sets that they only sell on their store which is cool.

buying vinyl in a real shop is definitely the best way to buy records , just for the feeling of really diggin the vinyl... however, i do buy vinyl more often online, because i am looking for very specific records that are hard to find, and the local shops normally dont have these kind of records. this really depends on where you located and what store you got. but let me tell you: i will always love real life diggin and the atmosphere and thrill for the hunt of a rare record in the bargin bins is THE reason for me to love the physical diggin a lot more... simply because of emotions being set free. :)

I buy both. But probably buy more in person. As I am looking through a record shop, I find vinyl that I was not even thinking about and buy it. If I go to like Discogs, then I am looking for a specific vinyl so have a tendency to buy less. I enjoy your videos!

Another pro for going in person is that many stores have multiple copies of the same title you are looking for. This allows you to inspect every one for quality, original packaging and cleanliness prior to purchase. If there are 12 copies of something I look at all 12 for the best one. Also there are titles which are filed in multiple locations like Phil Collins being in his own section as well as located in Genesis for example! Its handy to know the history of an artist when shopping this way as you can see. Never be afraid to dig!

I love my local record store, I'll just go sometimes and not even buy anything, the guys there are super nice, and I love just browsing through everything. Unfortunately, its harder to find some of my favorite music since I'm primarily into metal, but our record store has a decent selection, just not quite everything you would want.

It depends. I tend to buy a larger volume of vinyl online, but I tend to buy the better records from a store. So for example, im more likely to buy two dozen 45's off Ebay...But if im looking to buy my next Bowie or Beatles album, ill go in store.

I'd say more in person, but I often get given multiple records in one go from family or friends who are getting rid of their old collections for free so its a huge plus, most of the time its the music I like too Bob Dylan, The Ink Spots, Perry Como Elvis etc. I got a maybe fifty or so from a friend who did a house clearance a few years ago and there was a mono pressing of the first Beatles Album among it. If only it had been the stereo release it would've been worth a small fortune lol.

I live in NOLA and none of those cons really apply to me, especially at my favourite shop. I've never paid mark up for a record (in fact a few times I've kicked myself for buying a record online when I found it cheaper there a few months later). It's located several feet from a parking lot on a quiet street, and has loads of space to make it comfortable even when busy. The real highlight is that they have several turntables with headphones specifically for customers to sample the used records before they buy. I've walked away with some great deals on records I adore because while they had cosmetic blemishes on the record, they were well cleaned and played with no skips and very light noise when I sampled them. I would say I probably buy more records at once when I'm at a shop, but on the whole I do buy more online, only because a lot of the music I'm really interested in is foreign and nigh impossible to find in American record shops.

+finksgirl I hear you! I really love that feature of being able to sample the music on a turntable at the shop before you buy it! I forgot to mention that in this video but you have a great point! I do a mixture of both online and in person, but nothing beats walking around and digging for some gold in those bins! :)

I bought an old parliament album that was still sealed from the 70s but the corner was chopped off for some reason, I still got it though. the record turned out to be warped which was annoying but u don't regret it because there's an original slip of paper to order a life size Dr funkenstein figure 😂. I only order online when it's something independent that isn't really sold in shops because supporting local independent businesses rules!

I enjoy both! But I used to be a "buy in person" only kinda of a guy but I started to buy online last year and now this year I buy online more then ever. The biggest pro for me online is that you can usually find the exact record/pressing/etc... you are looking for. But the biggest pro for going to the store is that it's always a huge surprise! I have ideas of stuff I want but whenever I go to a store, I always leave with stuff I didn't think about before. The biggest con for me online is shipping, I hate waiting a long time for my record, which why I usually only buy from people that live in the same country as me. The biggest con for going to the store is having to drive the store. But that usually depends, I have a record store that's 5-10 minutes away and I have a store that's 25-35 minutes. And I really hate when you go to a record store and you end up leaving with nothing or very little. I think I only left the store with nothing once before in all my years of collecting. And that happened to be at the record store that's 25-35 minutes away. But I had a handful of times where I'd left a store kinda disappointed. When I go to a record store, I don't really want to leave with a few decent records, so if that happens, I'm disappointed.

+donaldrocks101103 you said LOTS of the same things i would have. i have one store (about 20 min away) to which i am pretty loyal. i always find surprises that i'd never even heard of before. i like scouring the one-dollar bin and taking risks on records with intriguing covers. if i am wrong, i'm only out a buck per mistake. recently, i also found a well-priced, reliable seller on discogs with whom i've enjoyed doing business.

If it's a new album or a reissue I just buy it online heck I just buy it on Amazon for 2 reasons. First and a big one is the price. Online, well on Amazon they are way cheaper than at the record stores. Usually $10 cheaper. Since I am a prime member I get them in two days. Second I get free Mp3 download with every purchase I make on Amazon which i personally do use so I think it's pretty cool. Now I do go to the record stores and dig around but mostly look for any vintage records that haven't been reprinted or reissued. And any new ones that catch my eye I check online and compare price and availability.

That doesn't happens here in Argentina anymore. Back in the 80s, when I was a teenager, I only had to take a bus 5 minutes downtown Martínez, near the train station. There were two record shops ( Tops Musical and Night&Day) where I bought my Heavy Metal records. It was awesome and I became friends with the old man and the old lady from "Night&Day". Cannot say the same thing about the "Tops Musical" stupid little guy with the thin voice (whom used to sell me the vinyls in exhibition and most of the time I returned there to claim a change). From around 1992 these two record stores went on broke because of the 90's crisis and were replaced by "Musimundo", also in Martinez (Unicenter), and I bought a lot of CDs that replaced the vinyls during that era here in Argentina. Today, I only buy in Internet, on a site called Mercado Libre sometimes, but the catalogue is very limited and very expensive, because of the Covid. And if I wanted to buy in record stores, I should have to go in an one and a haf hour trip to Downtown Buenos Aires, near the Obelisco, to find open specialized stores. Anyways, the feelings of buying récords today are not the same of the 80s, when artists used to pull a rédord every year. Today everything has been done, not much new stuff. Greetings.
