I've been watching some videos and stumbled across some youtubers trying to push Analog EQs as the answer to all your problems. Well, I dont really think you need to spend that kind of money to make great sounding music. So join me as I show you examples and explain how you can achieve what any Pultec or other Analog EQ can do with Digital Eqs like Pro Q 3 and Stock EQs. Enjoy the video and let me know if you have a Pultec or want one?
My name is Joshua Saldate, I produce music, I write it, and I’ve done a lot of things in the music landscape. Recently I've worked on Mammoth Wolfgang Van Halens albums, Alter Bridge, Slash, and more! From home studio to pro studio, maybe you can learn from my journey. Hopefully we can have our own journey! Enjoy :)

lol i love that you show a tube tech compressor when you say analog eq. Great video, Josh. Keep up the vids. I don't typically watch audio related stuff but yes of course skills > gear.

Facts! Plugins are sooo close to the real thing, ESPECIALLY EQ! Compression and preamps need some work still. If you already tracked through good preamps and some analog gear/console mixing in the box using only plugins is perfectly acceptable. I think this is especially true in the older days of plugins. When people were almost forced to record large bands at a pro studio or at the very least run it through an analog mixer. These days are a bit different because most people are doing everything in the box. It changes a lot now. Guitars/bass aren’t mic’d, drums are programmed, and only vocals are recorded. So there’s not much ‘analog’ gear in the mix. So in the mix we gotta inject that. Especially on the home studio front. That being said, use a good analog emulation plugin over the real thing. I have analog gear and plugins versions of it. For recording it’s better and easier than slapping on a plugin (no latency), but for mixing i rarely touch them these days. The clients won’t be able to tell the difference even if it is like 5% better and more smooth or adds more glue, the artist won’t care. Make a good mix first, get good at mixing. If you have a bad room use headphones and correction software. The tools are out there now, put in the time.

This is what I ALWAYS tell people who're obsessed with (especially EXPENSIVE!!) gear: "who'd do a better job??? A home cook with a limited understanding of cooing in general (like my dad, who can only fry eggs and potatoes LOL) who's using the best cooing gear in the world, using the best ingredients or say Gordon Ramsay or Marco Pierre White who may only use knives and pans; etc from you local clothing store (LOL!) and 5 or 6 ingrediënts from your local Aldi store? ;) I also always see people ranting about how a Warm Audio mic can't sound as good as an original Telefunken mic or whatever: "how can a budget clone sound as good as their 20.000+ counterpart?!?!" These idi.... people actually believe the original U-47 mic cost 20.000 when it's first released? Come on! I did my research: it cost around 200 Dollars new at the time and I'm NOT kidding (okay, that was a lot in those days, but still...) and last but not least: about ten years ago, I had 2 videos on my now deleted (dumb moi!) YT channel: one was me plugging in my very first guitar into my Line6 POD and at the same time, I split the signal to my Mesa/Boogie amp miced up. The other video was me singing/playing guitar using my Focusrite ISA and Twintrak Pro preamps (everyone hates the Twintrak... not really, but I'll come to that!) again splitting the signals: one's going to the ISA and the other to the Twintrak. I ONLY made these videos to stop myself from buying "expensive" gear! Just use what you've already got and use your ears alright! Anyway, I was the only person who knew that, when people saw a pic of the ISA on their screens, they're actually listening to the Twintrak. I did the same with me Line6 POD vs Boogie and everyone started complaining about how bad the Twintrak and the POD sounded. There's only ONE person out of hundreds of comments underneath both videos who said: "hey, that Twintrak actually sounds pretty nice!! I think I might buy one!" He's also the only person I sent a DM telling him that he's actually listening to the ISA. LOL ONLY ONE PERSON!!! :O Thát's the moment I started collecting budget clones of famous pieces of hardware, like the cheap Behringer synths. They sound INCREDIBLE!! :D I'm talking about Behringer gear from after the year 2015 or so... before that it really wás Mehringer and their stuff would blow up at night without the unit(s) even being plugged in. Okay, I'll stop ranting now, but people are just crazy!! .... paying 400+ for a 4 track cassette portastudio. "It's got a certain sound"... it does, but I'm not paying 100 Dollars for David Gilmour's turd in a jar

I agree you don't need fancy analog stuff to work, or to start working, but as producer, or mixing/mastering eng part of your value comes from offer creative options, good workflows, solutions.

By the way... ever seen PresentDayProductions; video in which he (Mark) compared 3 Pultec clones against the real deal? In some cases, I could hear a slight difference, but not much. Even the Klark sounded pretty decent. At least Mark matched settings by ear, instead of Glenn Frinker who did it by eye. I expected more from Fricker tbh
