It's always fun spending a Saturday afternoon with my Dad at a Card Show. This time, the show was in Santa Clara, California, just steps away from Levi's Stadium. There were incredible autograph signers at this show including Hall of Famers Jerry Rice, Joe Montana, and Rickey Henderson. Bo Jackson and others were also signing this weekend. This card show has been around for years, but it has been a while since I made the 2 1/2 hour trek to check it out. I'm glad we did, because I was able to make some really nice vintage card purchases.

I was there today for Ricky Henderson and Bo Jacksons autos, got a Jackson 87T and 86TT cards signed. Ricky signed a lithograph card, also signed by the artist. I was at the same vintage booths, I ended up getting a PSA 6 1968 Roberto Clemente, fair price and well centered. I wish I would have gotten that Clemente Post hand cut you showed, I have a few of those in my collection. I did pick up that 63 card NL Home Run Leaders with Banks, Aaron, Mays, and the 64 card with NL RBI Leaders Aaron. Not a big show but it was well worth it and fun. Great video!!

You have a better memory than I do, Graig. The advantage of being 20 years younger. If I wanted to think further about a card, I wouldn't stick it back in the value box!

I gotta say, you’ve convinced me to look for more vintage football cards at the shows I go to. They seem to be under appreciated and undervalued. That Roosevelt brown is killer

It's amazing. Roosevelt Brown is one of the best linemen of ALL TIME and his rookie care is 70 years old and really nice, for only $20. It's incredible. Vintage football is a sleeping giant in my opinion!!

Love the card show ride alongs! And hey - I made it into one of your videos! One of the comps you flashed for the 1951 Irvin was my sale! (Sold my raw Monte for $35 because I got a nice graded copy for less)

more and more i watch your vintage card shows, i just purchased a 1954 Mickey Mantle Bowman, PSA1. it s GOOD psa 1, like your other video was saying (good color, great centering, surface is ok, edges not that great), but still a great card!

Awesome. A lot of PSA 1s and 2s are REALLY nice cards, and YOU HAVE the card!! If I owned a Picasso that was messed up around the edges, I wouldn't care...because it's still a Picasso. I REALLY like the 54 Bowman Mantle card...what a great pickup!!

I need that Irvin for my 1951 Red/Blue Back set. I am about 70% of the way done with them. Around $40, which you paid, is a great deal! Early football cards are super cheap, no one wants to collect them for some reason.

Spud Webb winning a slam dunk contest at 5'7 is amazing. A guy that size, shouldn't be able to dunk the way he did. His vertical leap, must have been off the charts, and won the competition over his team mate Dominique Wilkins, who was also made incredible dunks.

I would have bought the Tommy John rookie. Any decent condition card of his 1964 rookie, as well as a Steve Garvey and Richie (Dick) Allen rookie would be a good long term investment since they all will most likely be someday selected to the HOF and be double the price. (Especially John)

Yeah. I agree about those 3 guys. The way PSA is grading right now, I was afraid if I sent that one in, they'd give it a 3 or a 4.

The Irvin looks great. A fish eye and thr edge but lovely centering, color. The 51 Topps set is a tad underrated imo. I think that with some collectors, it falls in the oddball card category. Irvin's 51 Bowman gets more love but the 51 Topps is technically his rookie and for $40, you did not go wrong. Speaking of oddball cards...I always like to hear opinions on what constitutes a player's true rookie. Maybe that can be a topic for your next video😊. Is a true rookie for you what the hobby consensus states a rookie is ( usually, the first national issue....33/34 Goudey, the 41 Play Ball, the 48 Bowman), or is it the player's first appearance on cardboard? For example, I feel that the consensus of the card collecting community is that the 33 Goudey is Gehrig's rookie. Gehrig, however, had a plethora of card appearances before the 33 Goudey, going back to the mid 20s. And which card would you rather have, if you had to pick, the 33 Gehrig or his earliest card (1925 Exhibits W461)?

Great question. Maybe I will give my opinion (because I think there could be several "right" answers to this topic) in one of my upcoming Wednesday Q and A videos. It's a TERRIFIC question/topic to discuss.

Do you keep your non-graded vintage that you purchase at shows in the card savers? I have always thought that they look better in the card savers, but I have also heard that they are not good for the cards. What is your process once you get the cards back to the house?
@MidLifeCards
@MidLifeCards Жыл бұрын
This is a great question. My low grade stuff that I don't grade, I keep in card savers. I think they look the best in those. So, all of my raw ungraded stuff are in a box with other raw stuff. Then, I keep all of my graded cards together as well.

Most of the shows I've been do, the tickets are numbered and they call people in groups of about 20. So, people hang out until their number is called. Usually moves pretty fast.

I would have gone the extra $10 on the better centered Roosevelt Brown.
@MidLifeCards
@MidLifeCards Жыл бұрын
I definitely get that. To me, the corners were slightly better on the less expensive one and the centering wasn't much different. It's just a PC card and I'll leave it ungraded, so it didn't seem worth it to me. But, I totally get valuing centering a lot.

I don’t get how anyone under 40 would even care about vintage baseball makes no sense to me. I can understand 80’s stars and up but pre 80’s doesn’t make sense. It’s a fad it’s where the money of and won’t last

Vintage cards always have more appeal and value because, unlike modern, they overcome extraordinary odds just to survive. It’s also about owning a piece of American history 😊
@greekperspective2076
@greekperspective2076 Жыл бұрын
@@drew703 true to someone that can relate if someone is buying vintage just because then they are more likely to sell when money is needed. That’s why it’s a fad. Vintage will drop in value soon. No one under forty really knows and vintage players before the eighties maybe like one or two people. It’s not relatable and this is why most vintage will be sold off soon. Only a select few cards will remain valuable no one wanted much vintage before all the newbies came into the hobby. I use to buy vintage cards to resell for a couple dollars before everyone came in. Now the same cards go for hundreds. No one wanted them before now all of a sudden some twenty something is a fan of some old dude he’s never heard of? Yeah right.

@@greekperspective2076 I understand where you're coming from and agree to a certain extent. There are some exceptions, like, Mantle, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Clemente...Jackie Robinson. The legends and/or players of historical significance that, transcend the sport, but yes a lot of other hall of famers probably will be forgotten about, or over looked, and will have a smaller niche of collectors.

@@ACD1994 exactly your spot on. All these other guys people are buying into will drop to a dollar again. People have trouble understanding this that are new to this. Like I said I’ve been doing this since 2012 none of this is normal or sustainable. No one wants racing car cards soccer cards really or any of these vintage cards unless it’s a huge name. People will realize this soon.
