Agreed. I have been self employed in a different industry. Doing it my way within the unspoken rules of respect and engagement between the sectors of supply chain. Nothing sticks if it is just handed to you. You have to have the like for it and the fortitude to make it your own effort. That is to say it's still real work if you want to be successful to whatever degree. If you want to make sales it will be easier to find wholesale. If you are just wanting to buy for your own use at a low wholesale price then you will not likely have success.

@@savvydirtfarmer you are a great resource, and sadly some people will have your name in their mouth with out your permission. Obviously, you take the time to develop good working relationships with the wholesalers you work with, and they will remember that. The better wholesalers **know** you aren't telling your viewers to call them. It's kind of you to share etiquette with your viewers, as good etiquette is highly undervalued. Not sure if you have started carrying native plants for your customers, but I work with lots of people who are... struggling with current events. I share the peer-reviewed research that shows more nature exposure yields better mental wellness. Now, a lot of my earliest clients are sharing YT videos on rewilding yards, going native plants for birds and bees, and are starting to share their knowledge with neighbors. Thought I should share with smaller, local nurseries like your self, so we can all work together to build a better future. Thank you for all you do!

Well said and sorry that happened. I am starting a small backyard nursery, I have found my suppliers by searching the internet and waiting for my first plant orders to come in. So excited. Keep up the good work. I learn so much from your videos and appreciate the time spent on them. I’m also did some experimenting over the winter and have been very happy with the outcomes. But would have never have gone out of my comfort zone and tried them without all of the encouragement you provide. Thanks for all you provide and look forward to many more videos 😊 awesome what you and your family are creating. I pray often for your family and His will over what your doing.

I started a small backyard nursery last year, and had a lot of perennials and annuals I took seed from and has sold seeds this vintner. Now I’m starting A LOT of seeds to put in my garden I’m building (to show and inspire customers) and to sell later this spring. My advice is to start seeds if you can. The profit on that is hard to beat and you can start indoors buying shop lights creating shelves. I have in total over 1200 seedlings and almost everything is plants you can’t find in other places. From sowing to selling can be as little as 6 weeks. Oh, and I’ve ordered som pretty unusual plants to divide like a white hosta ‘white feather’.

I have a feeling Opening Day is going to be a hit...and a bit overwhelming with everyone coming out to support you. I hope the neighbors are ready! Thanks for letting folks know what's really involved in running a business IRL vs. the "KZfaq Dream". I work a full-time job outside the home and hoping to grow big enough to bring me home. What I found over the years is, when you talk about plants and gardening people light up. They either want help and guidance or they have a lot to share. In just talking to people they express wanting to buy their plants from me. My family is on board for our first sale. I watch because it takes me back to 1976 and my first job weeding nursery gallon potted azaleas. The nursery covered 7 acres and the weeding never stopped. I was taught how to propagate everything and I potted tens of thousands of plants working summers there through High School and College. I actually grew about 2 dozen nursery gallon Pampas grass plants this year from seed for myself. You might consider some Pampas Grass, it's popular again, super easy and grows fast from seed.

You Sir have been busy. The place looks great. Nothing wrong with tough love. Too bad about the name dropping. Everyone wants the reward without doing the work. Do people really think a nursery is going to run itself. Like you said if you're really not ready to DO THE WORK then perhaps just go find a job somewhere. When I first opened my own business (not a nursery) I was doing 12 hour days, 7 days a week. After 5 years I can now relax and just do 6 , 8 hour days. Time management on your property is key but you seem to have it under control.

Thanks so much! I have a question for you, since you're a plumber. I do fairly well running my irrigation setups, mostly pvc, simple glue and go mostly. Nearly anywhere I have a threaded joint, usually at a timer, I almost always have a slow drip there. Do I need to use more tape? Tighten it more? I already feel like I'm gonna break them. But... it never fails, there's gonna be some dripping on those threaded connections somewhere.
@PlumbsmartPaul
@PlumbsmartPaul 8 ай бұрын
@@savvydirtfarmer yes. Use more tape. I’m installing drip irrigation as we speak. Only 40 PSI. I’m finding that the irrigation fittings fit looser than regular plumbing fittings. Wrap the tape very tight 5-6 turns or more if necessary. Start at the hub end and work your way to the beginning of the threads. Try not to wrap the first 1-2 threads or you might cross thread them. I Blue Monster tape. It costs more but I don’t have leaks.

I couldn't agree more. I started selling rare aroids (basically fancy houseplants) online a year ago. I will say that the wholesalers for those types of plants are very heavily kept secret. Meaning a Google search will not yield you any results as most of them do not have websites and are based out of Thailand and Indonesia. I ended up reaching out personally to the name of every business that was mentioned in someone's KZfaq video they did at a rare plant expo in Thailand. I had to find these people on Instagram/Facebook. A few reached back, and that's how I got my wholesaler list. Sometimes you just have to put in the effort to do research. Getting into perennials and shrubs now and I'm going through the same process, but I will say it's a lot easier to find wholesalers for perennials and shrubs vs. rare aroids.

This will be my first year open for business, I have over 60 varieties of things for sale. Yup I'm still trying to find wholesale plants websites. I did finally manage to find a great one for apple tree rootstocks, I just got my order today from them. Rite now I've been forced to buy parent plants and grow them out to make my own,(very slow process lol) which is what I want to do is be self sufficient, but at the same time I need to find things I can't get locally. I also found a great company to order dirt from locally, And pots are a pain to find too at times 🤣😂. Thanks for sharing the update, looking forward to more. Thanks for your time and knowledge.

A few years later, I sold them all. (hundreds of them) They grew to about 3-5 feet tall. I just love arborvitaes. 😊You said that you got yours from a wholesaler and you were potting them in little pots, are you going to sell them in those pots that small or will you be putting them in bigger pots after they have grown? Step by step is the right way, as you mentioned. But, yes, getting started is hard, but you just have to do it. @Savvy Dirt Farmer have you considered growing from seed Craig? Look at Coleus as they are a foliage plant which can be an indoor houseplant all year long or an outdoor annual (dependant on climate). They are easy to propogate from cuttings so would be good for your style of propogating... Pack of 80 seeds for me is £1, 1 plant in garden centre is £5 so there is definitely money to be made if you grow from seeds then propogate perpetually like you do. Would you consider native wild flowers or perennial flowering shrubs? Again, all very easy to grow from seed and sell on. There's a huge wild flower movement to help the pollinators. Hope it works for you! Ps sorry a few have acted out of turn.. The rest of us respect you, respect your work ethic and your teachings. Please carry on inspiring us. 🤩 Blessings and love from 🇬🇧

Working timber with my dad , loading stave bolts with my brother at age 12, busting them also with a wedge and sledge hammer and they are big and used for making whiskey barrels so that’s big for a 11 and 12 year old plus we loaded them on dads big trucks. Cutting brush and trees with the chainsaw later and still now climb the trees and I’m 66 now. Getting ready to take down about 15 trees with my husband. Plus a lot more

@@savvydirtfarmer thank you! I ended up finding them. We ordered 100 arborvitae from the state and should be receiving them soon. The plan is to plant them on the west side of our field to block neighbors who recently bought the adjacent land. I'm not sure if I should go ahead and put them in the ground or plant them in pots until they mature a bit.

@@kat4479 Depends on their size and your ability/willingness to take care of them. If they are small seedling size, they will be OK in the ground if you'll baby them all year. Otherwise, grow them out in pots for a year and plant them next Fall. Plants are a lot less susceptible to all kinds of things the bigger they are when you plant them.

What are some plants y’all have a hard time finding?
@savvydirtfarmer
@savvydirtfarmer Жыл бұрын
Right now, I'd love to be able to get some Clematis at the right price (that always matters), various hydrangeas, various perennials, fruit trees. All sorts of things. But... I can find hydrangeas, perennials, and fruit trees and plenty of them, whether they are the exact kind I might like to have or not.

@@savvydirtfarmer thanks for the reply. I'm finally in a point in my life that I can devote time to a nursery. I would like to get into wholesale. I did a quick google search on clematis, and your right. $8-9 a plant seems high from what I found.

@@jaysonwarden5979 They sell for a high price for sure, and they are show stoppers, no doubt, but I need to find them for less than that. If I can't? No worries... thousands of other great plants.

Honestly, I just found your channel and watched that video last night. You did give the name of the nursery, you did say to call and act like you had done it before. You did this, it would be no leap of the imagination to then feel comfortable to drop your name as the source of this information. You made a mistake, take responsibility for your actions, apologize for blaming those who took your advice, and be more careful with what information you share. Awaiting your apology, sincerely

@@savvydirtfarmer I'm just wondering if it's economically viable. They seem to be a staple for so many backyard nurseries. What % of your revenue would you ballpark that they make up?
@savvydirtfarmer
@savvydirtfarmer Жыл бұрын
I don't know, but pretty high... but that's misleading because we have had a limited number of varieties in a tiny nursery in year's past/ Look at it this way... is it a wise move for the grocery store manager to stop selling bread because he doesn't like bread? Even if he hates the things? Customers are just going to go get bread, and all their other groceries, somewhere else. So whether he likes bread or not, he should sell bread. Why? Because he's a smart businessman.

I love your videos a lot man!!! Today i put seeds too in my nursery and next week i will build my own greenhouse because they are so must have at some point and i want to start with. Also ornamental glasses are extremly amazing because they look nice in the growing season and they might sell great, it depends on your location but they are amazing things and this is why i added them in mine along with screening trees or ornamental trees like Gingko.
