Aerial Navigation - Dead Reckoning
WWII training film on basic aircraft navigation by dead reckoning, a navigation procedure to plot and fly a course based solely on mathematical calculations. WWII navigation cadets were sent to flying school following preflight where they spent from 15 to 20 weeks in training.
Emphasis was placed on precision dead-reckoning navigation with basic proficiency in pilotage, radio, and celestial navigation. Shows navigation cadet doing pre-flight preparation, checking weather conditions along flight route and winds aloft charts and continues with log sheet entries, chart plotting, calculation of magnetic deviation, and selection of suitable emergency landing fields. Shows aerial navigation Sectional Chart and instruments used in plotting a flight course. Aerial navigator making pre-flight aircraft instrument check inside a WWII U.S. Air Force advanced trainer. The aircraft is a Beechcraft AT-7 (T-7), nickname "Navigator". Shows the Magnetic Compass, The Drift Meter, Automatic Pilot Remote Control Gage, Air Speed Indicator, Temperature Gage, Clock, and the Altimeter, all instruments used by aerial Navigators. Shows aircraft navigator cadet using instruments to maintain aircraft heading and proper flight route. Shows the navigator's activities as the flight progresses and arrives at its destination. Very good interior scenes and in-flight footage of Beechcraft AT-7 (T-7) Navigator.

Doing General navigation right now at the pilot school and thought, why in the world we needed to do these things, when we just use GPS. We're doing the exact same steps as he is doing in the video with the same tools in 2022. Guess analog never gets old :-) Cool video that relit the interest!

I would love to know how single seat fighter pilots navigated from carriers in WW2. No fixed departure or return point. No fixed visual references at sea. No dedicated navigator on a single seat plane. No alternate runways at sea if you miss your carrier. Unknowns such as course changes during dogfighting.

My dad flew off the Yorktown. They bombed Tokyo and he had trouble with his plane. They left him . He flew low over house tops and made his way back to the carrier, he and his gunner

Did the Navy pilots use the same plotting board or something simpler since he had to fly the plane at the same time?

Google can navigate that in just a matter of seconds, and you won't be needing a paper map, pencil, drawing compass, set of radios, anthena, radar, etc.. just a single device and we call it "Smart phone".. I'm lucky to be living in this generation where everything is just so easy to access and easy to do with the help of this days technology.

Noobmaster69 You are lucky! Until the connection drops out at 5000 feet in poor visibility. Then you’re either lost or dead. 😵
