In this video we're trying out 2 songs from Buzzcocks. These two were suggested together several times, so we bent to the pressure and we're doing them together. We really enjoyed our first experience with this band, and we're eager to hear more. Enjoy!

Steve Diggle sings the verses on Harmony in my Head, but it's Pete Shelley who sings the chorus, hence the switch from the aggressive verses to the more melodic chorus.

I'm sure it's already been mentioned, but the guy singing Harmony In My Head (Steve Diggle) is actually their lead guitarist, who use to be their bassist, and the guy singing Everybody's Happy Nowadays (Pete Shelley) started as their guitarist, with Howard Devoto (of Magazine) being their 1st vocalist. If I'm remembering correctly Steve Diggle probably sang lead on 2 to 4 of their songs, with Pete Shelley doing lead vocals on all the rest (post Howard Devoto leaving the group).

Pete Shelley ( Everybodys Happy .. ) was the singer on 80% of Buzzcocks songs & Steve Diggle on 20%. One of their last singles Are Everything was recorded & mixed while all involved were on hallucinogenic substances ! They were a great band & Fine Young Cannibals had a big hit covering The Buzzcocks Ever Fallen In Love ❤️ .

Awwww I’m simply euphoric that you played both C n C , cheers so much ! These guys just effortlessly churned out hit after hit in the late 70’s n early 80’s . They progressed massively from the very early days with Howard Devoto ,of later Magazine fame , and minimalist home made punk songs like Boredom all the way through to these two spine tingling bangers and of course their worldwide hit Ever fallen in love … they epitomise Punk Pop to me and I’ll never get tired of trying to figure out how to play their songs in my clunky and amateur guitar style - I recommend Fast Cars to begin with . I’m on a super high now even though it’s the middle of the night here in UK, in fact I’m so super stoked thanks to your kind playing of both that I’m going back to the mental as anything vid and say something nice 😅 Thanks again , you’ve made a very cantankerous old Scottish Punk very happy 👌 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

the band was created by Pete Shelley (singer, lyrics, composer, guitar)and Howard Devoto (singer, lyrics, composer) with John Maher on drums and Steve Garvey on bass.first EP (Spiral Scratch)with 4 songs, 11 shows in the UK, then Devoto left to start "Magazine" with John McGeoch on guitar (later with Siouxsie and the Banshees, Visage, Public Image Ltd ..), Barry Adamson on bass (later with Nick Cave in the bad seeds, solo career..). Diggle was recruited as second singer and guitar.Shelley and Diggle each sang the songs they had written "shot by both sides" written by Shelley and Devoto was the first single by Magazine in 1978.

These songs show two sides of what Buzzcocks could do so well but always with a great tune. Steve Diggle wanted to play harder punk like The Clash and Pete Shelley was unique with his almost whimsical me melancholy (if that isn’t a contradiction). Buzzcocks were definitely punk simply because they were one of the original English punk bands from 1976, but like all the best bands including The Beatles, they evolved with every release so that by the time these two songs came out in 1979 there was a subtlety and craft in evidence proving they had broken out of the confines of “punk”. And they were hugely influential, both on what followed in the wake of punk and became known as “indie” but also on “power pop”. Cynthia is right to detect a sense of sarcasm with the lyrics to “Everybody’s Happy Nowadays” but I’d rather describe it as irony because Shelley was a lovely person immersed in empathy and poetry. Interestingly as he was bisexual none of his love songs were gendered but usually revolved around unrequited love. Always interesting, intelligent and artistic Buzzcocks were one of the greatest bands of all time!

I was reading your lengthy comment there , nodding sagely and agreeing wholeheartedly, thinking “ this guy knows his sh*t ! “ but you did kinda get carried away in that final sentence n I get it , in my own reply I characterised my reaction to both songs as “euphoric “.. 😱, but I’ll just dampen the flames a little by admitting that I’m a HUGE Buzzcocks fan and if I look hard enough I’ll be able to find most, but not quite all of their output in my cupboards … but even I wouldn’t suggest they were one of the greatest bands of all time .. misplaced ardour ? .. 👀.. hmm ? 😂😂😂😂 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

always liked this band as a kid in England whenever they appeared on Top of the Pops (quite often) and finally got to see them in Providence RI quite a few years ago. Couldn't have been more excited. Pete Shelley certainly knew his way around a tune and Steve Diggle was no slouch - although I love he totally knew when the camera trucked towards him and put on the "punk sneer" once he realized.....you guys totally got the appeal here as they're just great songs well-arranged with a solid sound.

Can I have THAT one when the wheel of destiny comes round please C n C ? It’s a one hit wonder from 1978 , this persona didn’t work long term and he took a break from performing until coming back years later as John Shuttleworth ( not his name either 🤪) and he is now an all round entertainer with a wicked sense of humour , capped by his Ballsy and shockingly funny for a song based on a real life serial killer called The Fox , his song is called Catch the Fox and you need to have your sense of humour turned up to 11 to watch it , it’s on KZfaq and even though the basic premise is cringe , it’s bloody funny . Anyway that’s his 2nd attempt at fame , what was his first persona from 1978 with THAT opening line ? First singer was Steve Diggle, who wrote about 3 or 4 songs by LP and half the ones released on singles only, second one was Pete Shelley who wrote and sang most of their repertoire. Incidentally, Pete Shelley is one of the greatest melodist in rock history and Buzzcocks one the best band ever. Their influence on music was major. Note that Kurt Cobain was so much a fan that he invited them to open for Nirvana on their last tour. Now Pete Shelley is somewhere with Kurt Cobain since he suddenly died in December 2018. Hope you'll react to many others songs from them. If I can make some suggestions, try "What Do I Get", "Fast Cars", "I Don't Mind", "Noise Annoys", "Nostalgia", "I Believe", "Running Free", all wonderful songs for sure. And they even made great songs after they reunited (in 1989) on their 6 albums released between 1993 and 2014.

Harmony In My Head is a perfect song, absolutely bomb proof. I sometimes wish Diggle had sang more. This next bit is brought to you courtesy of my inner guitar geek. That Les Paul with the P90 pickups that Diggle is playing would have been deeply unfashionable at the time, im betting he picked it up for next to nothing, now they are worth a fortune. This made them a popular guitar for Punk bands, look at footage of the time and you'll see them everywhere. Mick Jones of the Clash played them, Johnny Thunders (though his was a Junior, it had the same pickups) and Walter Lure of The Heartbreakers, theyre everywhere.
