Considered by many to be Judy Garland's finest hour on television, this episode of The Jack Paar Show, taped on December 2, 1962 (for broadcast on December 7, 1962) features Judy and her recent co-star, Robert Goulet. Judy is at the top of her game here, in looks, voice, and storytelling abilities. The Judy Garland Experience is proud to bring you the best quality version of this beloved performance known to exist. Donated to TJGE Library by Garland collector extraordinaire, Tom Garofalo, this same version has been requested by the Paley Center to be a part of their permanent collection, and The Judy Garland Experience is thrilled to bring this to people who don't have access to the television museum. Fuzzy pictured and incomplete versions of this show have been available to fans for years, but this is the first time the complete show has been made available to the public in this quality. This is even better than the version Parr himself toured with in the early 90's! Judy Garland's appearance on this program was so successful that less than three weeks after it aired she signed a 24 million dollar contract to star in her own television series. 24 million in 1962 dollars, let that sink in. Judy sings two solos and one duet with Goulet, she also shares anecdotes about vaudeville, MGM, and concert mishaps, as well as hilarious stories about her celebrity friends Orson Welles, Lana Turner, and others. Proving why no less than Lucille Ball proclaimed Garland to be the funniest woman in Hollywood. Mr. Garofalo has already uploaded two of Judy's songs from this program to his own KZfaq channel, and they have been downloaded often and reposted by others. But this, and the Paley Center copy, are the only official complete versions available that come directly from the Garofalo master. As for the show, Paar is charming, Goulet is dreamy, but it is Judy who sparkles and oozes charisma like no star before or since. Jack Paar pretty much sums it up himself when he tells Judy, not that he doesn't belong on the same stage as her but "I don't even belong in the same building with you!" I truly hope you enjoy the show, you'll be hard pressed to find finer entertainment.

Love that. It's true. She was charming, smart, funny, and kind. And I know this because her daughter Liza is the same. I met Liza only once and spent an evening with her and some friends. People are almost always a reflection of their parents and Liza was as genuine as it gets, very concerned with making me feel comfortable with the group since I was the only one who didn't know her. And even as a performer, Liza has always WANTED to give the audience what they want. I've been a fan of hers and Barbra Streisand my entire life and although I am sure Barbra values her fans, she has so often declined to deliver the standards that interest THEM, saying she can't spend her entire life singing "People". Liza, on the other hand, has always sung "New York, New York" and "Cabaret" and her other standards because her fans love to hear it and to me that reflects the kind of person she is and her appreciation for her fans. Judy raised Liza to respect others and, despite being born into Hollywood royalty, is a genuine person we can respect. Just like we do you Judy.

Thank Goodness we have those 26 masterpieces that we can watch over and over again. The problem with having Judy in a weekly series, is that she was such a powerhouse that it was like running a champion thoroughbred every day. They should have done several specials every year and put her in a winning time slot and not up against Bonanza, the 2nd highest rated show on television at that time.

For what it is worth, The Jack Paar Show was actually telecast in color. This is black and white because it is a kinescope which NBC and all the other networks did to archive shows. Videotape was way to expensive to use only once for the networks. I suspect that the original videotape of this show was recorded over and used many times after that. Probably even the next week's Jack Paar show.

I think it was taped in color. They would make a black 16mm kinescope copy. The 2 inch video tape would be reused. Hal Gurnee said that Paar had the video from the “Jack Paar Program” which he did later after the “Tonite Show” . He gave him to someone to reuse. Gurnee said they were about 90 dollars a piece at the time which was the equivalent to 800 dollars today.

I know. Don’t you feel SO SORRY for the young people today who didn’t know these stars or anything like them? They think they have, but that’s only because they have no idea. Yes, our culture has changed so much. A wise woman used to admonish Americans: “Don’t Let It Go!!” But they did. 😢

Someone once said Steve Allen and Johnny Carson were comedians who could hold a conversation and that Jack Paar was a conversationalist who could tell a joke.
@jmleaf8102
@jmleaf8102 5 жыл бұрын
Steve Allen wrote thousands of songs and instrumentals . He was an excellent pianist who played classical and jazz. he played several instruments . He was a college teacher. his brand of humor was very existential and way ahead of his time. he loved to do slapstick in his shows. his show was a comedy show. Parr's show was an interview style. did you know that Johnny Carson was an astronomist? they were all very intelligent men. The venue of their shows were different.

Extraordinary talent. Not seen since her and her fellows during those times. She learned from vaudeville, early influences, etc. What a background she had . She sang, danced, acted - just such a broad, deep talent. I so enjoy her humor, funny storytelling and intelligence. I miss her.

What I don't understand is why was Judy snubbed by the Academy awards. And the emmys. She got hosed by the Oscars twice, and the Emmys. At least Broadway honored her with a special Tony for her reopening the Palace theater to vaudeville in 1952 I think. Judy was the most gifted and talented person known to mankind. M.G.M. took this homely kid (according to M.G M.) Put her in their movies where she became a super star, and wprked her to death. Then she was so over worked, the y put her on drugs to keep her on front of the cameras. At this point of her life she became addicted to the.uppers and the downers for the rest of her life. Anyone who gets a child hooked on drugs, should go to jail for the rest of their disgusting lives. Judy died on June 22 1969, 12 days after her 47th birthday. That is a major league shame. The greatest entertainer that ever lived, gone at the young age of 47. JUDY YOU ARE GETTING NEW FANS EVERYDAY. Your fan base just keeps growing, GENERATION AFTER GENERATION. Your talent and personality knows no bound.

Judy Garland was before my time. Only now have I emerged myself to know her and see how remarkable and viciously talented she was. It’s a shame how the entertainment business treated women not too many years ago. (Still does but getting better) She is definitely someone I would have loved to have known. Hollywood used her up and spit her out! Thank God for her adoring fans! Which I have now become. Great talk show !

Judy is so pretty here. That black dress, showing just a little cleavage and a little knee of those lovely dancer's legs, was so classy looking. She looked elegant in the simplicity of her dress and minimal jewelry. Her makeup was perfect. I love her lips and lipstick. She was naturally flirtatious without even trying to be. That laugh of hers is so throaty and full and unique and infectious. She does not come off as tragic or sad in spite of her troubles. Instead she exudes happiness, love, and tremendous humour. She glows when she sings Little Drops of Rain. That set when she sings Paris is a Lonely Town was iconic.
