The BWF World Championships is held every year except for the year of an Olympic Games. It is a showcase of the very best in the sport and it determines who are the World Champions in each of the five disciplines, men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
The first World Championships was hosted in Malmo Sweden in 1977, and the Championship was held every three years until 1983, after which, it became a biennial event until 2003. Since 2005 however, the BWF World Championships has become an annual tournament.

quaterfinals world champ is where all the best matches happen. This is because they know if they get into semis they already get a bronze medal. this match alongside jorgensen vs nyugen in 2013 are reasons why we love fighter stories

Didn't expect Liew to go this far in this championship. He is really outstanding. He deserve it. It's tough being a sportsman. 30yrs old didn't help much.

Liew Darren may be erratic and not scale the heights in terms of great badminton players but his game is very exciting to watch.

Darren’s games in this tournament need to be studied. I still consider Darren has average defence, and netting, but the control of those overheads is just something else. I hope he can keep doing what he did in this tournament for the next few years to come.

Daren likes to intercept shots within his reach. So it's suicidal to play to his game. You have to move him around with rallies, if you keep good length on the rear court shots, you can blunt his attacks and look for chances to counter any weak returns. I know a club player who plays like him, looks very impressive and difficult to play against until you figure his game out.

His gameplay is under-studied because no one expects him to reach further in the tournament. By using his experience, he applies various shots appropriately, reads the opponent game style, and knows how to control the tempo of the game. His limitation in this competition is his stamina. You can see he is totally burnt out against Momota in the semis. However, kudos to him because I think it is not easy to get a medal in BWF World Championship, standing tall against the world best like Momota, Axelsen. It is a huge achievement.

I was intially shocked when the home crowd were supporting Malaysian. It was Nanjing. Sure they are supporting anyone against Japanese. Nevertheless, it was a good effort from Liew

He can't, he already is past his prime now, he's 30. Not 20. And not everyone will play better beyond 30yrs old.

Leverdez has 32 years old... and he has just his best ranking this year. So, Darren has 2 or 3 years more to be in his best season.

Leverdez is one out the hundreds, thousands or even more of top players that still plays after the age of 30. Yes, he's doing well but he can't play super series back to back like Kento Momota or the younger generations. And even if he does play back to back, his win-lost ratio isn't good. For example, Kento Momota, after he was released from his ban in 2017, he has only lost like 2 - 3 and has played in at least 10 tournaments and winning around 7 - 8 titles; including high rank super series. That being said, the younger generation will have higher stamina and strength to win more games. Once Kento reaches 30yr or so, he's gonna start play in less tournaments or barely because of age. Leverdez on the other hand, hardly have any good finals or top titles. Not saying i hate Leverdez but my main point is that he's getting old and soon reach the stage where he cant win anymore Titles.

Jordan Chai totally agree with you mate. That’s why LCW is the living legend. He achieved much more at 30-35 than anyone of his generation. He even can beat the top younger generation, such Momota at Malaysia Open, and fight match at again at Indonesia Open, given him 2-3 years stamina he will beat Momota anytime.

Fa Fo no way, lets not get carried away. As heroic as he is in this match, this tournament might be Daren's last hurrah before going down the hill. Leverdez is only one of the hundreds. They will be younger guys ready to move past Daren.

in this tournament, ratchanok slips too, zhang slips too, although they are women, but they don't pretend like him. the injury is not serious like the way he shows out, he just wants to buy time to take rest. If you got an injury and be painful, you can not jump smash after that and suddenly forget that you got injury after the match.

Sorry Guys but LZJ is the better player i would say, and the guy is 10 years younger. LZJ is a future prospect that has already won the Taipei Championship in 2018 and beating the No. 4 world ranking player in the Semi's. Not to down play Darren's skills, just saying that its abit difficult for him to actually move up the rankings or further improve his game, given his age. I mean its not impossible but its just very2 difficult. But i hope he moves higher up the rankings, maybe in top 10? I believe he can do it If he chooses to fix his weakness, from analysing this game you can clearly see plenty of holes here and there.
