Hands DOWN the best way to catch a giant bluefin tuna this year is to master the dropper loop rig but I have a couple tricks and key points that you need to know!
With a few modifications and some attention to detail…you can maximize your opportunity of getting bit in the strike zone.
This rig has put a TON of fish in the boat for me and I hope it can for you too this season!

If this is a dropper loop rig, id like to see what a sinker rig is for you.

I have fished both sinker rig methods for several years. Both work but I have to say, if you fish the inline Carolina rig style properly it gets more bites. Simply because the bait is able swim more naturally, especially on the retrieve. The key is to have a swivel right below the weight and don’t drop down too fast. Fishing it that way eliminates the line twist. I also tie the weight on in a way that doesn’t lose the weight

Yeah for sure man, if you fish the Carolina rig style you have to hook the sardine across and nose or inline with the nose and most the time it won’t get twisted up. I’m just saying what has worked for me and how as anglers I think we are missing out on some bites by running lead instead of a jig. This is definitely not the only way to fish a sinker rig, I like your idea with the swivel though, I think that would definitely help!

@@Obseadianfishing Your idea using a jig as the weight is interesting. Have you ever had the jig end up snagging the fish in the belly? Im going to give it try. In theory it would be a better presentation as opposed to using a regular weight. As long as its not an expensive jig
@Obseadianfishing
@Obseadianfishing 12 күн бұрын
@@matthill5066 I’m using a circle hook on the jig due to a lighter leader and not wanting to get it chaffed and broken off mid-fight so the snagging isn’t an issue but once you get into the yellowfin/yellow tails you could switch the hook to a traditional J hook or treble hook when the leader isn’t an issue. The bluefins WILL find any weak spot haha so I do my best to prevent it all together

It’s a sinker rig also called the bralla rig. A dropper loop is a different rig. Also the reason they used lighter line to the sinker was because they wanted the sinker to break off. They thought the sinker could cause the hook to pop out during the fight but now they are using heavier line and getting the fish and the sinker back. Leads not to cheap.

I hear ya man! I call it a dropper loop bc that was slang for the sinker rig/drop shot rig on the boats I grew up fishing on, we used all 3 variations. I get your point though, and I’m not saying this is the only way to fish a sinker rig/drop shot, I’m just saying what has worked for me in the past, and how I think we as anglers are missing out on some bites by using lead instead of a jig

You can’t go wrong with a dropper loop and a colt sniper like jig might get you a bonus bite!

Would using an Eddie bomb for the sinker with the same line as the leader work ? Not sure if Eddie bombs get bit during the day but I have heard that sometimes fishing the sinker rig the tuna will eat the sinker and not the bait.
@Obseadianfishing
@Obseadianfishing 12 күн бұрын
I always fish a knife jig or something like an Eddie bomb at night but during the day I would recommend downsizing your jig size and profile, a heavier flat fall is my plan to swap to in case I need more weight to get down because the colt sniper isn’t cutting it. I’m not saying the Eddie bomb wouldn’t get bit, but in my experience the tuna like something more subtle in the day time. If you catch one on it during the day let me know! And I would swap to circle hooks on the jig too because the fish will definitely chew through lighter leader used for sinker rig fishing. The circle hook will get him in the corner of the mouth and most likely your leaded won’t get chaffed up

Hmmmm.not sure about this one. Maybe for daytime and small wind and current.
@Obseadianfishing

Yeah daytime for sure and I have a variety of jig sizes to adjust for wind/drift to get in the Zone. The new tungsten jigs are definitely a solid option to add some more weight without increasing the size of the jig🤙🏼

No chance of double hook up? On the colt dropper loop?
@Obseadianfishing
@Obseadianfishing 15 күн бұрын
That’s definitely a possibility but I would rather deal with a 2 fish problem than a no fish problem BUT you have to run 60 or 80lb flouro leader and know your knot strength AND set your drag correctly, you won’t break off fish as long as you have leader is twice as strong as your set drag and your knot has a high breaking strength percentage. I use a San Diego jam knot and have never had an issue with it breaking. If you have questions let me know! More than happy to break it down

I fish a 25,000 for bluefin (500yds of 80lb Power Pro) and I use a 10,000 for yellowfin/yellow tail (500yds of 50lb Power) I do NOT recommend hooking a cow on 50lb braid lol

Do you use the drop shot for day and night?
@Obseadianfishing
@Obseadianfishing 15 күн бұрын
You can, this year I am running a plastic twitch tail sardine on top of my knife jig, the whole rig is about 5 feet long with 200lb Flourocarbon, I have a ringed Mutu circle hook about 1/2 way down and my knife jig connection below that. But then during the day I down size to a smaller jig and live sardine like in this video. Hope that helps! I will be doing a video on the knife jig set up as soon as I catch a fish on it!😂

@@Ron-ev2tk I use a 25,000 Saragosa with 80lb Power Pro, and my 20,000 Saragosa has 65lb braid. Each reel holds 500yds. And then I run a 10,000 Saragosa with 50lb braid but I try not to hook bluefins on that rod!😂 that’s my yellowfin/yellowtail rod
