I think it is important to note that regarding the Kitty Genovese case that people did take action. The first time a man yelled out to the attacker to 'leave that girl alone', which caused the attacker to flee the first time allowing Kitty to make it into the apartment building. The attacker then returned and Kitty began screaming for help. Someone in the building heard her screams and called the police, while her next door neighbour heard her, and she came to Kitty's aid and was with her as she died. The reason this was left out of the story is because the Times news reporter felt it spoiled the narrative.

Deindividuation may actually show the potential of evil there really is in some humans, thus the need for laws. Victor Frankl, observed that there are two types of people when placed in the most trying of situations, such as the concentration camps, some became selfless saints, others selfish devils.

Don't forget the presence of authoritative figures which was shown in things like the Stanford Prison Experiment, the Milgram study and the Asch line conformity studies.

@3:33, If that situation happened in my town, everybody would have helped. But it appears, from other commenters (Lucy Post and Caleb Mahlen) that the story in this video is inaccurate - people DID help Genovese! Good thing I read the comments, I was thinking New York City people were heartless from the way that story was presented. As a result, I believe this video should be updated with a more accurate example of the so-called "bystander effect".

how? In that unfortunate scenario, corrupt cops were already on the scene and the bystanders were recording and yelling at the officer to get off his neck. No one physically intervened because there was another cop standing by (the asian). If anyone tried to stop the officer, there would be tazing involved (or worse). No one called the police because they were already there. If it had random ppl doing that to Floyd and no one called the police (or simply recorded the incident), then that would be considered the bystander effect.
