Only recently did I read that Eleanor Steber sang the lead in the world premiere of Vanessa at the MET filling in for Sena Jurinac who canceled only 6 weeks before the opening. Upon retirement from the stage, Steber taught at the Cleveland (my home town) Institute of Music.
